Ridgewood NJ, Scottie Scheffler, who was trying to maneuver around a prior accident where a man was struck and killed by a shuttle bus at 5 a.m. outside of the golf course, was detained and faces charges of: second-degree assault to a police officer, third-degree criminal mischief, disregarding an officer directing traffic and reckless .
Scheffler teed off at 10:08 a.m. ET on Friday, just 90 minutes after an early-morning arrest and subsequent release from police custody.
Scheffler was trying to enter Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky, for his second round at the PGA Championship when police detained him. He later described the incident on social media as “a big misunderstanding.”
Released at 8:40 a.m. ET, Scheffler arrived at the course at 9:12 a.m., ready to play. His tee time was delayed due to a tragic accident earlier that morning. John Mills, a tournament vendor, was struck and killed by a bus outside the club at around 6 a.m. This incident pushed all tee times back by an hour and 20 minutes, allowing Scheffler to start just after 10 a.m.
Despite the morning’s chaos, Scheffler played a strong round. Beginning on the back nine, he made a birdie at the par-5 10th, a bogey at the par-4 11th, and another birdie at the par-4 12th. He continued his momentum with three more birdies at Nos. 18, 2, and 4, putting him at 8 under par, two strokes off the lead at that time.
Scheffler added another birdie at the par-5 seventh, finishing his round with a 5-under 66. This performance brought him to 9 under par, two strokes behind clubhouse leader Collin Morikawa, who shot a 65.
Scheffler released a statement to his Instagram page Friday morning in relation to his early-morning arrest while trying to enter Valhalla Golf Club for Round 2 of the PGA Championship.
The statement read in full:
“This morning, I was proceeding as directed by police officers. It was a very chaotic situation, understandably so considering the tragic accident that had occurred earlier, and there was a big misunderstanding of what I thought I was being asked to do. I never intended to disregard any of the instructions. I’m hopeful to put this to the side and focus on golf today.
“Of course, all of us involved in the tournament express our deepest sympathies to the family of the man who passed away in the earlier accident this morning. It truly puts everything in perspective.”
John Mills, a vendor working at the tournament, was killed Friday morning when he was struck by a bus outside Valhalla. Scheffler was not involved in that incident.
When trying to navigate the traffic and get onto the course property, Scheffler was arrested by police and initially charged with second-degree assault of a police officer, third-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving and disregarding traffic signals from an officer directing traffic.
