NYC ELECTS Self-Proclaimed Socialist Mayor Zohran Mamdani—What His Anti-Israel & Anti-Landlord Agenda Means for the City

New York NY, a new and historically left-wing era is set to begin in New York City. Democratic nominee Zohran Mamdani has clinched the 2025 mayoral election with 50.4% of the vote, defeating independent former Governor Andrew Cuomo (41.3%) and Republican Curtis Sliwa (7.5%).
Mamdani, who will become the city’s first Muslim, first South Asian, and youngest mayor in over a century, ran on a platform that promises to radically restructure New York’s economic landscape. His victory signals a significant political shift in the nation’s largest city.
The Agenda: Socialism and a War on Capital
Mamdani’s policy platform is a laundry list of far-left proposals, which he vows to fund by increasing taxes on corporations and the city’s wealthiest residents. Key items on his agenda include:
- Affordability Measures: Rent freezes on rent-stabilized units, universal free childcare, and raising the minimum wage to $30 an hour by 2030.
- Public Services: Making city buses entirely fare-free and establishing government-run grocery stores to combat food inflation.
- Property Seizure: Pledging to target “negligent” landlords and seize their properties, an expansion of city power that critics argue will reduce the quality of affordable housing.
While serving as a State Assemblyman, Mamdani publicly called for “seizing the means of production” and has a history of advocating for defunding the police, though he attempted to moderate that stance after securing the nomination.
Controversy and the “Intifada” Stance
Mamdani’s history of radical anti-Israel rhetoric has caused deep concern among Jewish New Yorkers and community leaders. His positions have been widely condemned by rabbis across the religious spectrum, with more than 1,000 signing an open letter opposing his candidacy.
- Refusal to Condemn: Mamdani has refused to condemn the slogan “globalize the intifada,” stating he stands by “the idea” behind the controversial term.
- Netanyahu Threat: He has publicly pledged to arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu should he visit New York City, arguing the leader should face charges as a “war criminal.”
- Legislative History: During his time in the State Assembly, he sponsored legislation to bar New York-based charities from working with Israel and declined to support Holocaust remembrance measures.
In their open letter, opposing rabbis noted that such rhetoric “Delegitimize the Jewish community and encourage and exacerbate hostility toward Judaism and Jews.”
Familial Influence: The Academic Tie to Radicalism
Mamdani’s political ideology has been linked to the work of his father, Mahmood Mamdani, a prominent professor at Columbia University who specializes in postcolonialism. The elder Mamdani has also courted controversy with his writings:
- He called for a “Third Intifadah against settler colonialism.”
- He defended Ugandan dictator Idi Amin—responsible for the killing of an estimated half a million people—as “the father of the Ugandan nation” in his book Slow Poison.
- Following the 9/11 attacks, he suggested a “moral equivalence” between the al Qaeda attack and the U.S. bombing of Afghanistan.
As Mamdani prepares to take office, the nation’s largest city is bracing for a political and ideological shift that will impact everything from the city’s budget to its global diplomatic position.
