Teaneck NJ, As the Jewish community in North Jersey prepares for the upcoming Passover holiday, “precaution” has been replaced by “necessity.” Following a string of local and global incidents, Teaneck law enforcement and community leaders met on March 25 to send a clear message: Security is the top priority.

A Community Under Watchful Eyes

Nearly 150 residents gathered at The Jewish Center of Teaneck to discuss safety strategies with local officials. Organized by Deputy Mayor Elie Katz, the meeting addressed the palpable anxiety felt by one of New Jersey’s largest Jewish populations.

The urgency follows a disturbing March 8 incident where a 19-year-old student, Netanel, was targeted and shot with gel pellets outside a local synagogue.

“I was targeted purely because I am Jewish,” Netanel told the crowd, recounting how he was harassed for his kippah and tzitzit. “They want us to hide. I will never hide.”

What to Expect: Increased Patrols and Holiday Safety

For many, the primary concern is the unique schedule of Passover, where families walk to and from synagogues and seders late into the night.

Teaneck Police Department officials confirmed:

  • Increased Patrols: Enhanced police presence will be visible throughout the holiday.

  • Reporting Protocol: Residents are urged to report every incident, no matter how minor. Tim Torell of the Jewish Federation of Northern New Jersey noted that antisemitic incidents remain “vastly underreported.”

  • Self-Defense: While residents asked about pepper spray, Deputy Chief Seth Kriegel advised caution, noting it can often affect the user as much as an assailant.

The Rising Cost of Protection

The surge in threats isn’t just a social issue; it’s a massive financial burden. Katie Katz, Executive Director of Teach New Jersey, highlighted the staggering shift in school and synagogue budgets.

  • 84% Increase: The average security expense for Jewish schools has nearly doubled over the last two years.

  • Budget Impact: Security now accounts for over 3% of average school budgets, with some institutions spending over $400,000 annually to keep students safe.

Global Context, Local Impact

The local tension reflects a grim global trend. Data from the Combat Antisemitism Movement shows a 34% increase in assaults against Jews worldwide following recent geopolitical escalations. From explosive-laden trucks in Detroit to gunfire at synagogues in Toronto, the threat landscape has shifted dramatically.

A Message of Defiance and Pride

Despite the warnings, the mood in Teaneck remains one of resilience rather than retreat. Rabbi Daniel Fridman of the Jewish Center of Teaneck reminded the community that the ultimate response to hate is joy.

“We need to be joyous and be proud,” Fridman said. “Don’t let them ever take that away from you.”
