New Milford NJ, A quiet Friday evening in New Milford took a dramatic turn on May 8, 2026, when local volunteer firefighters were called to battle a fast-moving vehicle fire that threatened nearby homes and critical infrastructure.
Shortly after 8:30 PM, the New Milford Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched to the intersection of Asbury Street and Graphic Boulevard. Upon arrival, Chief 302 discovered a vehicle fully engulfed in flames, positioned in a precarious location directly beneath overhead power lines and adjacent to a residential wooden fence.
Rapid Response Prevents Neighborhood Extension
With the fire threatening to melt power lines and ignite the neighboring property, Chief 301 established immediate command and requested an emergency response from PSE&G (Public Service) to inspect the overhead electrical hazards.
The coordinated efforts of New Milford’s engine companies were instrumental in containing the emergency:
-
Suppression & Exposure Control: Crews from Engines 33 and 34 deployed two attack lines. One team focused on knocking down the vehicle fire while the other “cooled” the wooden fence, successfully preventing the fire from spreading to the residential backyard.
-
Securing the Scene: Engine 32 and Truck 31 arrived to assist with overhaul and vehicle stabilization.
-
Environmental Protection: During the blaze, the vehicle’s gas tank ruptured. Firefighters acted quickly to place absorbent pads around nearby sewer drains, preventing fuel-contaminated runoff from entering the local water system.

All Clear on Asbury Street
Firefighters remained on the scene for several hours, ensuring the area was safe for residents. The scene was officially cleared after the vehicle was towed and PSE&G technicians confirmed that the overhead power lines remained structurally sound.
Thanks to the swift training and dedication of New Milford’s volunteer force, what could have been a major utility outage or house fire was safely contained to the vehicle of origin.
