5 Things You Didn’t Know About Memorial Day History

While many associate the long weekend with AAA’s estimated 45 million Americans traveling or the historic running of the Indianapolis 500 (a tradition since 1911), the roots of the holiday run much deeper.

1. It Began in the Wake of the Civil War

Originally known as Decoration Day, the holiday was born from the devastation of the American Civil War as local communities began decorating the graves of fallen soldiers. The first national commemoration took place at Arlington National Cemetery on May 30, 1868. It wasn’t until 1971 that Congress officially moved it to the last Monday in May to create a federal three-day weekend.

2. One of the Earliest Ceremonies Was Held by Freed Slaves

On May 1, 1865—three years before the first national decoration day at Arlington—roughly 10,000 people, mostly newly freed Black Americans, held a parade at a Charleston, South Carolina racetrack. They gathered to properly bury and honor Union prisoners of war who had died there.

3. Arlington National Cemetery Was Built on Confederate Land

The 639-acre cemetery, which now conducts up to 27 funerals every weekday, was established in 1864 on a plantation seized from the family of Confederate General Robert E. Lee. It is also home to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, which has been guarded continuously 24/7 since 1937.

4. The 3:00 PM National Moment of Silence is Law

No matter where you are during your holiday activities, Americans are asked to pause for one minute at 3:00 PM local time for the National Moment of Remembrance. Established by Congress in 2000, it coincides with Taps Across America, an event where tens of thousands of musicians simultaneously play the 24-note bugle call from lawns and porches.

5. George Washington Was a Fan of the Barbecue Tradition

The American obsession with backyard grilling during holiday weekends exploded during the consumer boom of the 1950s, but the connection between patriotism and charred meat goes back further. In fact, George Washington famously hosted a massive barbecue—featuring a 500-pound ox—to celebrate laying the cornerstone of the U.S. Capitol.
