Going Above and Beyond: The Rescue on Shift

Earlier today, Maywood Police Officer P.O. Gangemi found himself facing an unusual tactical challenge. A tiny, frightened baby fawn had slipped into a deep hole in the ground and was completely unable to climb out on its own.

Recognizing the urgency of the situation, Officer Gangemi went right to work. Animal rescues require a careful touch—wild animals can easily injure themselves if they panic. Showing incredible patience and compassion, Officer Gangemi slowly worked his way to the trapped animal, soothing the frightened fawn before safely lifting it out of the deep drop-off.

Thanks to his rapid and gentle response, the little fawn was thoroughly checked over and found to be entirely unharmed.

“Protecting and Serving” Every Member of the Community

The Maywood Police Department shared the heartwarming update on social media, reminding residents that the duty to protect and serve extends to the area’s wildlife as well.

“Police Officers never know what a shift may bring — and sometimes protecting and serving includes helping our four-legged community members too,” the department noted. “Great job by P.O. Gangemi!”

The successful rescue serves as a great reminder of the unexpected, compassionate daily actions local law enforcement officers take to keep every corner of their towns safe.
