Good News for NJ Homeowners: Why Your Natural Gas Bill Is Dropping This October

the staff of the Ridgewood blog

Ridgewood NJ, With utility prices fluctuating across the country, New Jersey residents are about to get some welcome relief right before the cold weather hits.

PSE&G has officially announced a new proposal to lower residential natural gas heating bills by 5%, effective October 1, 2026.

This price reduction means nearly 1.9 million gas customers across the Garden State will continue to benefit from the lowest gas supply rates in the entire state and surrounding region. Here is a breakdown of how the utility company pulled this off despite a highly volatile global energy market, and what it means for your wallet this winter.

How Much Will New Jersey Residents Save?

The proposed 5% reduction directly impacts the gas supply charge on residential bills. Because approximately two-thirds of a household’s annual gas usage occurs during the peak winter months between December and March, this price drop is timed perfectly to shield consumers from high seasonal costs.

By keeping operational excellence and cost-efficiency at the forefront, the utility is reinforcing its commitment to safe, affordable, and predictable energy.

The Strategy Behind the Savings: How PSE&G Defeated Market Volatility

Lowering rates isn’t an accident—it’s the result of strict discipline and long-term asset management. While many energy providers buy fuel dynamically as demand spikes, this specific rate reduction relies on three core operational pillars:

1. Hedging and Advanced Gas Procurement

Instead of buying natural gas exclusively during freezing winter peaks when prices inevitably skyrocket, teams monitor energy markets year-round. They purchase a massive portion of the state’s gas supply months—or even years—in advance. This aggressive hedging strategy smooths out market fluctuations.

2. Strategic Access to Local Storage Resources

By purchasing gas when market prices are low during warmer seasons and storing it for future use, the utility creates a buffer system. When regional demand surges, they draw from these physical reserves, protecting New Jerseyans from sudden price spikes.

3. Sourcing Closer to Home (The Marcellus Shale Advantage)

Approximately 90% of the residential gas supply is sourced from the Marcellus Shale region in neighboring Pennsylvania.

  • Lower Transportation Costs: Proximity means drastically lower pipeline transmission fees.

  • Insulated from Disruptions: Sourcing gas locally means New Jersey is far less exposed to geopolitical events or infrastructure breakdowns that threaten distant supply lines.

“Keeping energy affordable for our customers requires planning, discipline and a long-term approach,” says Brian Clark, Senior Vice President of Gas Operations. “By securing supply in advance, maintaining access to valuable storage resources and managing costs responsibly, we’re able to help customers avoid many of the market swings that can lead to higher winter heating bills.”

What Happens Next?

The price drop is currently pending before state regulators as part of an official filing. Once finalized, the 5% reduction will automatically apply to residential customer accounts starting October 1, ahead of the winter heating season.

  1. build more pipelines
prices will go down further for gas
gas will be used to make electricity which will lower the price
Note to the left wing gov.. get your head out of your ass and represent residents not illegal aliens
