Wayne NJ, Federal law enforcement has intercepted a severe domestic threat right in northern New Jersey.
A 22-year-old Wayne resident has been arrested and detained after allegedly attempting to provide material support to the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS). According to a federal criminal complaint, the suspect didn’t just want to join the terrorist group abroad—he was actively scoping out local targets for a domestic attack.
U.S. Attorney Robert Frazer and Assistant Attorney General John A. Eisenberg announced the charges, highlighting a swift, multi-agency response that prevented a potential tragedy on American soil.
Inside the Investigation: Chat Rooms and a Fake ISIS Fighter
The suspect, identified as Mohamed Sagha, allegedly spent months deeply embedded in extremist digital circles. Federal documents reveal that between December 2025 and June 2026, Sagha participated in online chat rooms dedicated to planning attacks within the United States.
However, his operational plans unraveled after he connected online with a Confidential Human Source (CHS) working for the FBI, whom Sagha believed was a legitimate ISIS fighter operating out of Syria.
To cement the deception, the undercover informant sent photos from conflict zones, including images featuring the ISIS flag and AK-47-style assault rifles. Sagha took the bait completely, revealing his own violent ambitions.
High-Value Targets Scoped in Wayne, NJ
During encrypted conversations with the informant, Sagha allegedly detailed plans to assist other extremists in striking a place of worship.
He then escalated the plot, admitting he was planning his own independent attack. He specifically named two high-value targets located right near his residence in Wayne, New Jersey:
-
A National Guard location
-
A Jewish place of worship
Sagha went as far as sharing reconnaissance images and videos of both facilities with the undercover source. Federal authorities also noted that Sagha had previously made a failed attempt to flee the United States and travel directly to ISIS-controlled territory in early March 2026.
The Digital Footprint: Smuggled VPNs for Terrorist Communication
The final piece of evidence sealing the complaint involved digital infrastructure. Between late May and early June 2026, Sagha and the informant discussed using Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) to shield overseas ISIS fighters from Western intelligence surveillance.
Sagha purchased a commercial VPN subscription, transferred the access credentials to the FBI informant, and provided explicit tutorials on how the “brothers” in Syria could use the technology to mask their locations and evade detection.
“The defendant allegedly wanted to attack targets in the United States in support of ISIS and its hateful ideology, but the FBI detected and put a stop to his violent plans,” said Assistant Director Donald Holstead of the FBI’s Counterterrorism Division.
Legal Consequences & Next Steps
Sagha made his initial appearance in Newark federal court before U.S. Magistrate Judge Leda D. Wettre, who ordered him held without bail.
-
The Charge: One count of attempting to provide material support and resources to a designated foreign terrorist organization.
-
Maximum Penalties: Up to 20 years in federal prison, a $250,000 fine, and a lifetime of supervised release.
The successful disruption of the plot relied on a joint operation between the FBI’s Newark Division, the New York City Police Department (NYPD), and the Wayne Police Department. The government’s case is being handled by the U.S. Department of Justice’s Counterterrorism Section.
Note: The charges contained in the complaint are accusations, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
