Montvale NJ, A quiet New Jersey community is mourning following a tragic accident over the weekend. An elderly couple was found dead from apparent carbon monoxide poisoning inside their Bergen County home on Saturday night, July 11, officials confirmed.

The incident has sparked renewed local warnings about the extreme dangers of carbon monoxide—often referred to as the “silent killer”—and the importance of routine welfare checks for senior neighbors.

First Responders Detect Dangerous Gas Levels during Welfare Check

According to Montvale Police Chief Doug McDowell, emergency personnel and firefighters dispatched to a residence at 2 Lexington Lane at approximately 9:21 p.m. to conduct a standard welfare check.

Upon entering the building, first responders were immediately met with dangerously elevated levels of gas and carbon monoxide. Teams quickly evacuated the home to locate the residents, finding two unresponsive occupants inside.

An 84-year-old man and an 83-year-old woman were tragically pronounced dead at the scene.

Running Vehicle in the Garage Points to Accidental Cause

A preliminary investigation was launched immediately by the Montvale Police Department alongside the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office Bureau of Criminal Investigation. Investigators determined that the lethal buildup of carbon monoxide likely originated from a vehicle left running inside the home’s attached garage.

Authorities have explicitly stated that foul play is not suspected, and the heartbreaking event appears to be entirely accidental.

Carbon Monoxide Safety: Protecting Your Loved Ones

This devastating event serves as a stark reminder of how quickly carbon monoxide can accumulate in enclosed spaces. Because the gas is completely odorless, tasteless, and invisible, it can overcome individuals before they realize there is a leak.

Safety experts urge homeowners to follow these critical guidelines:

  • Never leave a car running inside a garage, even if the garage door is completely open.

  • Install carbon monoxide detectors on every level of your home, especially near sleeping areas, and test them monthly.

  • Check on elderly relatives and neighbors regularly, particularly during periods of extreme weather or isolation.
