Rutherford NJ, A heartbreaking afternoon in Bergen County has left a local community mourning and a neighborhood family searching for a temporary place to live. A 73-year-old woman tragically lost her life on Saturday afternoon, July 11, after her vehicle veered off the road and crashed directly into a residential home.

The severe impact caused significant structural damage, forcing the immediate evacuation and displacement of the residents inside.

First Responders Attempt Life-Saving Measures at the Scene

According to Rutherford Police Deputy Chief Sean Farrell, emergency personnel rushed to the residential property on Delafield Avenue at approximately 3:35 p.m. following urgent reports of a vehicle striking a house.

Upon arrival, officers discovered the 73-year-old driver—who was the sole occupant of the vehicle—unconscious behind the wheel. Officers immediately initiated CPR on the scene.

Rutherford Basic Life Support and Advanced Life Support crews quickly took over medical intervention, transporting her to Hackensack University Medical Center. Tragically, she was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

Investigation Focuses on Potential Medical Episode

While the exact sequence of events is still being evaluated, a preliminary investigation has provided some initial answers. After interviewing multiple eyewitnesses at the scene, investigators currently believe the driver may have suffered a sudden medical episode right before losing control of the vehicle.

Foul play is not suspected, and the crash appears to be a devastating medical accident.

Structural Foundation Damaged; Red Cross Steps In

The aftermath of the crash extended beyond the vehicle itself. The car struck the Delafield Avenue home with enough force to compromise the building’s foundation.

The Rutherford Building Department was quickly dispatched to the scene to evaluate the structural integrity of the house. Due to safety concerns regarding the foundation, the home was deemed temporarily unlivable.

One family was officially displaced from the home on Saturday night. Local authorities confirmed that the residents planned to stay with close friends while repairs are figured out, and the American Red Cross was notified to assist with emergency support.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family of this tragic event,” Deputy Chief Farrell stated in a community brief.
