RUTHERFORD, NJ — What started as a standard fill-up at a local gas station quickly turned into a high-stakes police investigation after a driver attempted to pay for his fuel with fake cash.

According to Rutherford Police Deputy Chief Sean Farrell, 28-year-old Boris P. Gutierrez of Clifton has been arrested and charged after allegedly using a counterfeit $100 bill to pay for a nearly full tank of gas before speeding away.

The incident unfolded on Monday, June 8, at approximately 6:14 p.m. at the Sunoco station located at 224 Park Ave. in Rutherford. Police report that Gutierrez pumped $97.01 worth of gasoline into his vehicle. However, when the station attendant approached the driver’s side window to collect the payment, Gutierrez threw a balled-up fake $100 bill out the window and immediately stepped on the gas, fleeing the scene.

The alert Sunoco attendant instantly recognized the crumpled bill as counterfeit and notified his supervisor, who immediately contacted the Rutherford Police Department.

Multiple Charges Pile Up for Fleeing Suspect

Following a swift investigation, Rutherford detectives successfully identified Gutierrez as the driver of the vehicle. In addition to the criminal charges, police uncovered a laundry list of traffic and registration violations.

Gutierrez has been officially charged with:

  • Forgery

  • Theft by Deception

He was also hit with several severe traffic summonses, including:

  • Driving while suspended

  • Driving without a license

  • Driving an unregistered vehicle

  • Displaying fictitious license plates

  • Driving without motor vehicle insurance

On Wednesday, July 15, officers from the Clifton Police Department located and arrested Gutierrez on an outstanding warrant issued by Rutherford. Rutherford police officers subsequently took custody of Gutierrez and transported him to the Bergen County Jail.
