Key Highlights of the Grand Opening

  • Supermarket-Style Shopping: Clients now shop through a point system tailored to family size rather than receiving pre-filled bags.

  • Dignity & Preference: The new design allows families to select food based on dietary needs, cultural preferences, and allergy restrictions.

  • Youth Volunteer Support: Teenagers from Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Ridgewood helped stock shelves and prepare the space for its grand opening.

  • Monthly Access: Registered families receive enough food to help sustain their households for an entire week every month.

How the Choice-Based “Shopping Points” System Works

The Father English Food Pantry was among the early pioneers of the “client-choice” model, replacing traditional hand-outs with an empowering, store-like layout. Here is how the renovated pantry operates:

  1. Family-Based Points Allocation: Upon registration, each household receives a set number of “Shopping Points” calculated directly from their family size.

  2. Item Point Values: Every item on the shelf carries a clear point value based on size and category (for example, a small box of cereal costs 2 points, while a large box costs 3 points).

  3. Customized Shopping Experience: Clients walk the aisles and choose the exact products their families prefer until their allocated points are spent.

This model drastically reduces food waste, prevents allergic reactions, and allows individuals to shop with the same autonomy they would experience at a commercial grocery store.

“Now designed like a food store, clients can ‘shop’ with dignity as opposed to being handed a pre-filled bag of food.”

Community Partnership & Youth Involvement

The success of the renovation and grand opening highlights deep community ties across northern New Jersey. Teen volunteers from Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Ridgewood spent hours setting up displays, organizing inventory, and stocking shelves to ensure the pantry was ready for opening day.

Expressing deep appreciation for the ongoing support, Carlos shared his gratitude to the entire OLMC community for their years of unwavering dedication to the pantry and the residents of Paterson.
