TEANECK, NJ — Authorities in Teaneck are calling on the public for assistance following a sophisticated spree of vehicle burglaries that took place in the early morning hours of April 22, 2026. Detectives report that over a dozen vehicles were targeted, with thieves focusing on a specific and costly automotive component: airbags.

The Timeline: A High-Speed Theft Operation

The crime spree began around 2:20 a.m. when a resident on Madison Avenue reported three vehicles had been entered. As Teaneck officers canvassed the neighborhood, they discovered a total of 13 victimized vehicles across several streets, including:

  • Thomson Avenue

  • Summit Avenue

  • Lucy Avenue

  • East Lawn Drive

  • Harding Avenue

By 4:09 a.m., a resident on East Cedar Lane reported their 2021 Honda CR-V stolen. While the vehicle was recovered later that day on Harding Avenue, the investigation revealed a disturbing pattern: the suspects are highly efficient, with surveillance footage showing them entering a car and removing an airbag in under 30 seconds.

Why Airbags? A Growing Black Market Trend

A preliminary investigation found that Hondas and Acuras were the primary targets. According to the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB), new airbags retail for $1,000 or more, but can be sold on the black market for $50 to $200.

Thieves are bypassing security by breaking windows or compromising locks to get to these components. While some vehicles were left unlocked, the suspects did not hesitate to use force when necessary.

How You Can Help: Surveillance and Tips

Teaneck Detectives are currently reviewing footage of the suspects, who were seen operating a dark-colored vehicle and wearing face coverings.

Police are asking residents to:

  1. Review Home Security Footage: If you live on any of the affected streets, please check your doorbell or exterior cameras for the night of April 22.

  2. Report New Findings: If you believe your vehicle was tampered with but have not yet filed a report, contact the department immediately.

Safety Tips to Protect Your Vehicle

To deter future thefts, the Teaneck Police Department suggests the following:

  • Lock It Up: Always lock your doors and ensure windows are fully closed.

  • Hide Valuables: Remove personal property or keep it out of sight.

  • Lighting Matters: Park in well-lit areas whenever possible.

  • Anti-Theft Devices: Use steering wheel locks or visible alarm systems to discourage “quick-hit” thieves.
