Hackensack NJ, authorities lifted a shelter-in-place order after a suspicious item was received in the mail on Tuesday at One Bergen County Plaza in Hackensack, the home of county offices. Following an investigation, officials confirmed that the item posed no threat to public safety.
The Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office reported that the incident, which began around 1:30 p.m., prompted a swift response from multiple agencies, including the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office, the Prosecutor’s Office Intelligence & Counterterrorism Unit, and Bergen County Hazmat.
As a precaution, the Hackensack Fire Department and the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office Bomb Squad were called to the scene to conduct a thorough sweep of the building. After careful examination, they confirmed that the suspicious piece of mail was harmless, according to Deputy Chief of Detectives Jeff Angermeyer.
By approximately 3 p.m., normal operations resumed at the facility, allowing employees and the public to continue with their day.
This incident underscores the importance of swift action and coordinated efforts from local authorities in ensuring public safety, even when the threat turns out to be false.

What caused this overreaction? Bomb squad? Counterterrorism? Hazmat? What was actually in the package, or is it too embarrassing to mention?
My guess is the item was probably shipped with the batteries installed and some jostling during transit … turned the device on … prematurely.
