Upper Saddle River NJ, a year after the grand opening of Upper Saddle River’s 9-acre, $8.6 million Lake Street sports complex, local officials gathered this week for a formal dedication ceremony. The event marked the official naming of the facility and celebrated its significant impact on the community.

“We wanted to memorialize all of the hard work and effort that went into realizing the sports complex and officially dedicate it to the residents,” said Mayor Arman Fardanesh during Tuesday’s ceremony. “Seeing how much the complex is used every day highlights the value it brings to our community.”

The sports complex, which opened in 2023, includes two multipurpose fields with ballfield overlays, pickleball courts, a snack stand, a field house, a press box, a walking path, and off-street parking. The fields are equipped with lights for evening games, making the facility a hub of activity throughout the day.

A black plaque with gold lettering now stands on the site, reading: “Upper Saddle River Sports Complex Dedicated to the Residents of Upper Saddle River 2023.” The plaque also honors council and committee members who played a role in bringing the project to life.

Located on part of the former 48-acre Pearson Education Campus, the sports complex is only one piece of the larger development. The remaining 39 acres are being transformed into a 208-unit townhouse complex, including 22 affordable housing units. Ground was first broken on the sports facility in December 2021.

Council President Jon Ditkoff expressed excitement about future upgrades, noting that grandstands, scoreboards, and other enhancements are planned for next year. He also mentioned that additional grants, including open space funding, would help cover the costs of these improvements, as well as the installation of charging stations in the parking lot.

As the sports complex continues to thrive, it serves as both a recreational space and a testament to the borough’s investment in its residents and future generations.

  1. Ridgewood’s Gove Park is 32 acres. USR only needed 8 to create a world-class sports facility. We could do the same using 12 acres and still preserve 20 acres for nature. Ridgewood would solve dozens of perceived field problems and at the same time, be the envy of surrounding towns. Hardly anyone goes there anyway. Not sure if there would be a floodplain issue, but it is worth looking at.

    1. You hit the nail on the head, Operative word being “perceived”. There is no lack of fields. It is a simple maintance issue and the current fields aren’t cool enough for the sports parents. Kids could give hoot. They just want to play.

    2. “Not sure if there would be a floodplain issue”

Oh, it’d be an issue. Nice idea but unfeasible.

    3. To John – Do your research, due diligence, before you post misguided ideas. and false info.
FEMA maps updated frequently, are available online and in the VOR engineering dept. Grove St. Park has had recent 100 yr flood events +plus many more.
Grove Park is a Parkland Deed Restricted within the Flood Plain. Also the County Parkland is Deed Restricted within the Flood Plain. Also protected under Green Acres. There are flood zone & flood fringes. Any questions see town website Engineering, Floodplain Management – of ALL Flood Plains in Ridgewood. OR the FEMA website.

      1. So I guess that won’t work, huh? Just an idea, a bad one obviously. I am not that vested or that interested in doing the research you did. It is appreciated. Thank you and have a blessed holiday season.

  2. How about making a nice sport complex field at the dead end of Lakeview Drive just haul out all of the leaves like other towns do.
Watch the people on the lake view drive start crying, we don’t want the traffic.
