Washington — Under government pressure, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV agreed Friday to recall 1.4 million vehicles that can be cyber-hacked remotely — as Congress, automakers and regulators are raising increasing concerns about vehicle communications.
The first-of-its-kind callback came just days after a magazine report showed hackers could wirelessly take control of some functions of a Jeep Cherokee.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said it will open an investigation into the recall to ensure all vehicles that could be affected are covered. “Opening this investigation will allow NHTSA to better assess the effectiveness of the remedy proposed by Fiat Chrysler,” NHTSA Administrator Mark Rosekind said in a statement, acknowledging the agency had urged the move.
Owners will get a USB device that they may use to upgrade vehicle software, which provides additional security features independent of the network-level measures that largely addresses the problem.

When Cindy Myer’s husband, Rob, died from a heart attack in 2005, she didn’t just have to worry about taking care of her family — she had a business to run, too.
Myer succeeded her husband as chief executive of Ridgewood Moving Services and turned the struggling company into a profitable venture, which last year had revenue of about $2.3 million.
Myer, who leads some 30 employees, said she’s proud of spearheading that turnaround as well as cementing her company’s strong community ties. She recently took time to reminisce about her journey from amateur business owner to CEO and also explained why her moving company is about more than just moving. (Edited for clarity and length.)
Q. When you and your husband originally bought Ridgewood Moving Services, what was the plan with respect to how the work would be divided between you?
Rob worked for Ridgewood Moving when he had gotten out of the military in the ’80s. We were married in 1985, when I was still in the fashion industry. In 1987, we bought the business. He ran it, and I was a vice president, just by title only.
And then in 1988 when I got pregnant and had my first daughter, I retired to raise a family. He ran the company from 1987 to 2005, when he passed away. He died of a heart attack. He was 47.
The New Jersey MLS (NJMLS) has released its market report for June, 2015. The number of homes under contract in June was up 20% over the same month last year.

That’s a startling number considering last year’s spring market was very healthy.
Year to date, Essex County experienced the biggest increase in sales activity across northern New Jersey, with an 18.3% increase in residential properties under contract. In Bergen County, residential sales increased by 11.3%.
Despite the increased activity, median sales prices have been fairly flat. YTD, the median sold price for residential sales in 2015 is up only 0.3% in Bergen County. Across all areas in northern New Jersey, the increase was 1.6%. Those numbers may increase in July as the large number of June contracts begin to close.
The number of new listings increased in June by 10.9%. While that may initially be cause for concern, the absorption rate has actually decreased during the same period. The absorption rate is a measure of the inventory of homes on the market – the number of months supply of homes currently listed for sale. The absorption rate for residential properties decreased by 4.3% in June over the same period last year. For condos and townhouses, a subset of this group, the absorption rate increased by 1.4%. Still, the rate for condos/townhouses is nearly the same as that of residential properties overall.

Absorption rates for residential categories are in the range of 6.8 to 7.0 months, which is a healthy number. In the more desirable parts of northern New Jersey, the rates are much lower.

As many remember Learning Commons project organizers believed a state facilities grant, would supply the last additional needed funds for the community-driven project, even though grants had been awarded across the state, including $434,220 to Ridgewood to finance other work at the high school, the Learning Commons did not fall within the parameters of the grant requirements.
In September 2012 The Ridgewood High School (RHS) Home and School Association (HSA) launched an aggressive fall fundraising campaign to pay for the transformation of the RHS library into a space better suited for 21st century learners. At the time it was thought that the renovation would potentially cost $850,000.The new RHS Learning Commons was needed to replace a library that has not been renovated since it was originally designed in 1963. After a little debate the Village embraced the idea and the needed funds were raised .
The same principles could be applied to the Ridgewood Public Library to attain the desired result and would create a more inclusive comunity based solution.
Before anything is done they need to research this. This is not about wanting a light and airy library and it is not about the director wanting a renovation, this is taxpayer money. They have clubs meeting there and tutoring taking place. Is this what we want in the library or should the focus be on access to books and information?

Americans have become so “non-judgmental” that many people can no longer tell the difference between good and evil. We congratulate ourselves for being “nicer,” more sensitive and less prejudiced than past generations of Americans, but we don’t stop to consider how much more there is to morality than that. An America that isn’t full of good people won’t remain a good nation, nor will it remain strong and free over the long haul. Our country’s lack of morality has real consequences that are capable of eventually sinking us as a nation.
1) The Collapse Of Marriage: There used to be quite a bit of social stigma attached to getting a divorce or having a child out of wedlock. That’s no longer true and consequences for society have been horrific.
Although there is some dispute about the numbers, roughly 40% of marriages now end in divorce and “half of all children born to women under 30 in America now are illegitimate. Three in 10 white children are born out of wedlock, as are 53 percent of Hispanic babies and 73 percent of black babies.”
That’s important because children raised without a mother AND a father are statistically worse off in just about every area imaginable.
“Controlling for socioeconomic status, race, and place of residence, the strongest predictor of whether a person will end up in prison is that he was raised by a single parent. By 1996, 70 percent of inmates in state juvenile detention centers serving long-term sentences were raised by single mothers. Seventy-two percent of juvenile murderers and 60 percent of rapists come from single-mother homes. Seventy percent of teenage births, dropouts, suicides, runaways, juvenile delinquents, and child murderers involve children raised by single mothers. Girls raised without fathers are more sexually promiscuous and more likely to end up divorced. A 1990 study by the Progressive Policy Institute showed that after controlling for single motherhood, the difference between black and white crime rates disappeared.
Various studies have come up with slightly different numbers, but all the figures are grim. According to the Index of Leading Cultural Indicators, children from single-parent families account for 63 percent of all youth suicides, 70 percent of all teenage pregnancies, 71 percent of all adolescent chemical/substance abuse, 80 percent of all prison inmates, and 90 percent of all homeless and runaway children.
A study cited in the Village Voice produced similar numbers. It found that children brought up in single-mother homes ‘are five times more likely to commit suicide, nine times more likely to drop out of high school, 10 times more likely to abuse chemical substances, 14 times more likely to commit rape (for the boys), 20 times more likely to end up in prison, and 32 times more likely to run away from home.’ Single motherhood is like a farm team for future criminals and social outcasts.”
Instead of trying to reverse the crippling damage being done to our country by the collapse of marriage, we’ve chosen to degrade it even further by allowing same sex unions, soon to be followed by polygamous unions that will degrade the institution ever further. If it’s true that marriage is the bedrock of society, then our nation’s house is built on sand.

Despite suffering a few setbacks along the way, the Graydon swim team has been pleased with the progress of its young swimmers and is hoping to continue that momentum at next week’s Lake League Championships.
The team finished second with 218 points in a tri-meet with Fair Lawn (252 points) and Wyckoff (156) on Monday, but several swimmers have shown improvement since the start of the season earlier this month.
The meet featured several non-traditional events, such as 100-yard races and relays with both boys and girls. Sarah Afromsky headlined Graydon’s girls lineup, winning the 13-and-older 100 freestyle in 1:06.02, while Evan Shadbolt had the highest finish for the boys, taking second in 1:02.84 in the same event.
The 200 freestyle “step-up” relay, which consisted of boys and girls participants from each age group, represented another bright spot for Graydon. The team of Morgan Hoffman (11/12-year-old age group), Merrill Klein (9/10), AJ Liguori (13/14) and Shadbolt (15-17) placed first in the event in 2:04.38.

The Park West Tavern Loft will host a special event for developmentally disabled people Friday night.
The event, titled “Club LOU ’15 Summer Blast,” will feature dancing and fun as the participants are taken out for a “night on the town.”
Life Opportunities Unlimited, a Ridgewood-based charity, is the driving force behind the occasion.
“Life Opportunities Unlimited is a human service agency that provides residential and day program services to adults that have developmental disabilities,” said Gail Tamirian-Mandeli, head of the organization.
The charity, founded in 1995, has a number of homes throughout area towns and a day program in Ridgewood.
People from all over will be coming to the event, giving the participants an opportunity to meet new friends.
“From living in our group and other agencies’ group homes, to living in the community with their parents, to living on their own in Orchard Commons in Allendale, people come from every place,” Tamirian-Mandeli said.
Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) in a blistering floor speech Friday accused Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky) of lying to him over a deal to vote on reauthorizing the Export-Import Bank.
“Today is a sad day for this institution,” said Cruz, who is running for president. “What we just witnessed this morning is profoundly disappointing.”
The Texas Republican’s remarks come after McConnell set up a procedural vote on Sunday to reauthorize the Export-Import Bank, which saw its charter expire last month. Democrats have said McConnell agreed to allow a vote on attaching Ex-Im to “must-pass” legislation to win support from Sen. Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.) for a trade package earlier this year.
On the floor, Cruz said McConnell in a private conversation denied to him that there was such a deal.
“The majority leader was visibly angry with me that I would ask him such a question,” Cruz said. “The majority looked at me and said ‘there is no deal, there is no deal, there is no deal.'”
The Texas Republican said his staff at the time told him that McConnell is “lying to you,” but Cruz suggested that he took the Republican leader at his word.
“What I told my staff that afternoon, I said, well I don’t know if that’s the case or not. But I don’t see how when the majority leader looks me in the eyes and makes an explicit promise,” he added. “I don’t see how I cannot take him at his word.”

Little League Softball: Section title a big step forward for Ridgewood team

In his 14 years of coaching softball, Tony Barbera has learned that players benefit most when challenged. So he often had his Ridgewood Little League U14 team, the Raiders, “playing up” this spring and summer.
“Most teams play sophomores and we play freshmen against them,” he said after a long and winding schedule was nearing its end. “This helps our girls get ready for the high school varsity.”
Barbera should know, as his daughter, Mia, is a three-year starter for the Ridgewood High School team at shortstop and is entering her senior year.
One of the challenges involved the girls making some history, Barbera said, by becoming the first Ridgewood softball team to enter into the Little League Tournament.
In the first round of the regional event, they lost to Morristown National in a rain storm, then routed Ringwood, 20-0, and Morristown National, 8-4, the latter in dramatic come-from-behind fashion. And the Raiders once again defeated the Morristown team, 12-1, to capture the Section 1 title and advance to the state tournament, where they beat Jersey City before losing consecutive games to eventual champion Northfield and runner-up West Windsor.
The percentage of those with favorable views of the Republican Party has dropped across the board since early this year, including sharply among Republicans, a Pew Research Center pollsays.
Fewer than a third of Americans, 32 percent, have a favorable impression of the GOP, a 9-point drop in the poll since January. Pew’s survey finds that 60 percent have an unfavorable view.
Positive views of the Republican Party have fallen 18 points since January among those who identify as Republican, from 86 to 68 percent.
It has also fallen 8 points among Independents since then, from 37 to 29 percent.
Meanwhile, the Democratic Party’s ratings are closer — 48 percent favorable to 47 percent unfavorable — and Democrats’ views on their party have remained steady, 86 percent favorable, during the GOP’s dip.
Pew’s latest poll was conducted early last week amid a nascent 2016 presidential race that has been dominated in the media by businessman Donald Trump since he launched a White House bid in mid-June.
