RIDGEWOOD — The natural progression for many coaches at the high school level is to start out at the freshman or JV ranks before landing a job leading a varsity squad.
Ridgewood High School freshman boys basketball coach John Fiocchi climbed that ladder years ago, but the descent back down the rungs of the high school game has been just as a rewarding.
“This has been the most fun I’ve had: coaching the freshmen,” Fiocchi said last Friday, shortly after receiving an award from the Bergen County Coaches Association recognizing his role in staging the Bergen County Freshman Tournament the past 20 years.
For tournament director Joe DelBuono, the honor — presented to Fiocchi at halftime of the championship game at RHS — was long overdue.
“He’s dedicated himself to the tournament for over 20 years,” DelBuono said. “It’s about time that someone recognized that he does this, and it’s a good thing for the younger coaches to see too — that you dedicate yourself and you get some appreciation for it.”
Fiocchi has served on the tournament selection committee for more than 20 years and has been instrumental in coordinating the use of Ridgewood facilities every year for the tournament semifinals and finals, leading many to refer to the tournament as “The Road to Ridgewood,” according to DelBuono.
While the coach of more than 40 years is seemingly on top of everything when it comes to the freshman tournament, the recognition took him by surprise.

There’s just one wrestler still standing for the Ridgewood High School team that defied expectations all season long.
Junior Kyle Inlander earned a third-place finish at last weekend’s Region 2 tournament to clinch a spot in this weekend’s state tournament, which starts later today at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City.
“I’m really excited to compete on the big stage, and I’ve put everything I have into this moment,” Inlander, a 182-pounder, said by phone Wednesday night.
“I couldn’t be more proud of Kyle,” RHS head coach Torre Watson said in a phone interview Tuesday. “He’s focused on trying to do the best he could for this team and make it out for the tournament. Him being the one to represent our team is just a tremendous feat.”
Ten Ridgewood wrestlers competed in the region tournament held at Bergen Community College. The Maroons had 11 qualifiers — junior Julian Bangash had to drop out due to injury — after a dominant performance in the District 6 tournament held the previous weekend, in which nine RHS wrestlers reached individuals finals and four captured titles.
RHS didn’t repeat that level of success at regions, but for good reason.

Gas Tax Hikes Are Not The Answer

For most Americans across the country, the lower prices at the gas pump have had a direct positive impact on everyday living. The average price of a gallon of gasoline hovers around $2 across the country, saving the average household about $100 every month. These lower gas prices shouldn’t be an excuse to raise taxes, but that’s exactly what many federal and state lawmakers are poised to do.
Governors and state legislators are currently considering per-gallon tax hikes of 2 cents per year in South Dakota, 10 cents in Iowa, 10 cents in Utah, 10 cents in Texas, 10 cents in South Carolina, 13 cents in Illinois, and a whopping 25 cents in New Jersey.
In Minnesota, Gov. Mark Dayton proposed a 6.5% gross receipts tax on gasoline at the wholesale level, in combination with a number of other tax hikes. In Michigan, legislators approved a plan that could push per gallon gas taxes as high as 40 cents by 2018, pending voter approval. In Georgia, lawmakers are considering replacing the state gasoline tax with state and local excise tax on gasoline, which would effectively raise the tax per gallon from 45.4 cents to 53.6 cents.
Additional states seem poised to follow suit in proposing gas tax hikes as governors around the country unveil ambitious comprehensive transportation plans.
Boy Dies After Leaping From 2nd-Floor Window of New Jersey Elementary School in Apparent Suicide: Source

A student at a New Jersey elementary school plunged to his death from a second-story window in what police are investigating as a suicide, a law enforcement source familiar with the case tells NBC 4 New York.
The boy, in fifth grade at Grant Elementary School in Dumont, was initially taken to a hospital in critical condition after the jump around noon Friday, authorities say. The source said he later died at Hackensack University Medical Center later in the afternoon.
A law enforcement source said the boy got into a dispute with a classmate during a game of chess. Afterward, the boy passed his classmate a note, then went to the window, opened it and jumped, the source said.
Schools superintendent Emmanuel Triggiano said there were other students in the classroom at the time.
Why are road, bridge and transit projects so expensive in NJ? Lawmaker wants answers
Why do roads, bridges and transit projects cost so much to build in New Jersey?
State Senator Michael Doherty, R-Warren, has proposed a bill to try and answer that question and recommend ways to cut those costs.
His bill to form a State Transportation Analysis Task Force will attempt to answer findings in a recent Reason Foundation report, which said New Jersey spent $2 million a mile for road bridge and transit construction. The foundation ranked the state 48th in overall performance and cost effectiveness.
A task force is proposed as lawmakers are wrestling with finding revenue to finance major road, bridge and transit projects through the state’s Transportation Trust Fund. On July 1, all revenues raised through the state gas tax and other related taxes will be consumed by debt payments, leaving no money for construction.
In an opinion article that Doherty wrote on NJ.com, he said the state needs “our own analysis of the factors that drive New Jersey’s road costs and a look at other states to determine how they are able to operate more efficiently.”

The issue in this post is not whether Senator Menendez should be indicted or not. I don’t know if he should be or not. This is about Obama Administration tactics.
But I do know this: the Department of Justice (DOJ) LEAKING on a Friday night that they are going to bring criminal charges is about as DIRTY as it gets. A leak about intentions is not an indication of a good faith investigation — it is an ugly SMEAR. It is dirty.
I am all for fair investigations (and news if there is an actual indictment) but LEAKING of a possible indictment on a Friday night like this shows bad faith. Why did the Obama Admin do it? So that it gets talked about on all the Sunday morning shows? Rotten! It sure is not playing it straight.
And why would the Obama Administration / DOJ want to SMEAR fellow Democrat, Senator Menendez? Two motivations could be: 1/ Sen Menendez opposes the Obama Administration desire to normalize relations with Cuba and 2/ he also opposes the Obama Administration suspected deal with Iran. President Obama really wants both these deals. The last thing the Obama Adminstration and the President want is for the Democratic Ranking Member on the Senate Foreign Relations to oppose them [and his opposition began when the Democrats controlled the Senate and he was Chairman.]

One can just picture Mayor A. seething at the choice made from among the all of the available photographs of Senator Menendez.
However uncivil it may sound, most people know that if you lay down with dogs, it’s flea city when you get up.
More significantly for the Mayor, does the Obama administration’s decision to throw Menendez under the bus indicate that the Chicago syndicate no longer has any use for the NNJ syndicate as a whole? Or is Obama’s ire being directed solely and simply toward the ‘top dog’?
I’am shocked just shocked that there is corruption going on.
Yes, this is so out of character for NJ. In all seriousness, this will probably not even make the national news, being that it’s such a regular occurrence.
“Civility” can be a cloak used to mask an agenda of dominance. Agree with me, or give-in to my viewpoint, and you’re a nice, civil person. Disagree, and you’re either stupid or evil – and, either way, uncivil.
“Those who talk most about civility,” wrote Richard John Neuhaus in his landmark work, The Naked Public Square, “usually define it in terms of their accustomed way of doing things. ‘Their way of doing things means they continue to be in control. We mean to take over – nicely, if possible, but if that’s not possible, well, civility is not the highest of the virtues.
Well lets not forget what he and his running mates have done in the past with their attacks on fellow council members, employes and citizens and vote accordingly. Don’t be fooled by all this civility act. They are trying to smooth over their image so they get re elected and continue the BLOCK VOTE that they have enjoyed.

US Sen. Menendez: ‘I’m not going anywhere’ amid federal investigation

NEWARK, N.J. –Amid a federal investigation, U.S. Sen. Bob Menendez insists he has always been honest in his more than 20 years in Congress and says he is “not going anywhere” even as a person familiar with the matter says he’s expected to face criminal charges soon.
The New Jersey Democrat has been dogged by questions about his relationship with a Florida doctor and political donor, whose office was raided by authorities two years ago. Now charges are expected to be filed against Menendez in the coming weeks, according to the person who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the investigation is pending.
Attorney General Eric Holder declined to say whether he has authorized criminal charges against the senator.
At a news conference Friday in his home state, Menendez spoke in English and Spanish, chopping his hand down for emphasis.
“Let me be very clear, I have always conducted myself appropriately and in accordance with the law,” he said. “Every action that I and my office have taken for the last 23 years that I have been privileged to be in the United States Congress has been based on pursuing the best policies for the people of New Jersey and this entire country.”
He said he couldn’t take questions “because there is an ongoing inquiry.”

TRENTON — Would the real Chris Christie please stand up? New Jerseyans who voted for a straight-shooting reformer and untypical politician are wondering if the guy they once loved was replaced by an imposter pod, like in the “Invasion of the Body Snatchers” movie.
One of the hotter topics around Trenton is a proposed Christie administration pollution settlement disclosed by The New York Times. Administrations going back to Jim McGreevey’s sought $8.9 billion from ExxonMobil. The Times reported the proposed settlement is a mere fraction of that, $250 million. It actually was only $225 million. A judge already has ruled the giant oil company is liable for pollution from refineries it once owned in Linden and Bayonne.
A former state Department of Environmental Protection commissioner, Brad Campbell, wrote in The Times that Christie’s chief counsel, Christopher Porrino, allegedly intervened to get a better deal for ExxonMobil, which was a big donor to the Republican Governors Association when Christie chaired it.
Speculation under the Gold Dome is Christie sold out the people of New Jersey for the equivalent of three cents on the dollar to balance his budget.

PARAMUS — An MRI machine exploded during maintenance at the Oradell Animal Hospital late Friday morning, critically injuring one repairman but sparing scores of employees and animals in the hospital, Police Chief Kenneth Ehrenberg said.
The critically injured worker suffered cuts and crushing-related injuries; the other two had minor to moderate injuries including respiratory complaints, the chief said. He said their identities were being withheld pending family notification.
As of mid evening, the chief said there was no update on the most-severely injured man’s condition.
The explosion caused a small leak of helium, which cools the inside of the machine and can be dangerous in a closed area. The area was subsequently ventilated and made safe, Ehrenberg said.
Responding to reports at 11:51 a.m. of a fire and an explosion at the animal hospital at 580 Winters Ave., police found the ceiling of the east wing collapsed, but the building remained structurally sound, the chief said. There was no evidence of a fire, he said.
About 60 animals and 100 employees were in the building, the chief said, and the staff subsequently accounted for all animals and employees. They were moved to several contingent sites in the county, he said.
Alleged red-wigged Glen Rock bank robber has checkered past, records show

GLEN ROCK — The wig-wearing woman who authorities say robbed the Glen Rock Savings Bank last month and took the proceeds to a casino has a checkered criminal past that includes jail stints in both Florida and New York, where she was convicted for robbery, burglary and theft.
Michelle Cantatore, 51, of White Plains, N.Y., was detained Thursday in Atlantic City by agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation on a single bank robbery charge.
But before walking into the Glen Rock bank three weeks ago brandishing a paintball gun, arrest records indicate Cantatore spent more than three years behind bars in a Florida prison following a 1982 conviction on three counts of grand theft and one count of burglary.
Cantatore, who was born in New Mexico, also served more than a year in a New York prison when she was convicted in 1996 of third-degree robbery in Westchester, records show.
According to the FBI’s complaint against her, Cantatore fled Glen Rock with $112,900 in cash and was inside Atlantic City’s bustling Borgata casino just seven hours later.
