Some Readers Not Sympathetic to Suicide by Train

Basically I think anyone who kills themselves by any method is selfish and doesn’t give a damn about who they hurt.

I was on a train that killed someone. Didn’t feel a thing.Any sympathy I would have had for someone who has lost hope to the point of ending it all, was erased by the inconsiderate and attention whoreish way in which they decided to do it.

And what’s the point? Nobody ever learns your name. Nobody cares. It just makes them three hours late for wherever they were going.

It sounds harsh as we are talking about someone’s life, but I agree this is a very rude way to end it all. First of all, the trama you cause the guy driving the train is terrible. Why do that to someone who has done nothing to you? And as Rob noted, you have now delayed people on that train and trains behind it for several hours — maybe you caused a mother or father to miss their kid’s birthday party, recital, sporting event, etc. You might even deprive a mother or father the rare chance to read a book to their kid on a night they happened to get out of work early enough. Suicide is never the right answer, but if you are going to do it, try a less self-centered approach — at least this way the world won’t say “good riddance” about the jack-a$$ who, for example, made me miss my baby’s first steps.

Readers not satisfied with PSEG likening PCP  toxicity level to aspirin

A consultant engaged by PSE&G told GR and RW that the PSE&G Pentachlorophenol (PCP) preservative was safe and likened its toxicity level to aspirin (see main article). ( https://www.northjersey.com/news/228635781_Expert_tells_Ridgewood_officials__Chemical_on_utility_poles_not_toxic.html#sthash.PSitqPIC.dpuf )
From Wikipedia at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pentachlorophenol

Short-term exposure to large amounts of PCP can cause harmful effects on the liver, kidneys, blood, lungs, nervous system,[1] immune system, and gastrointestinal tract. Elevated temperature, profuse sweating, uncoordinated movement, muscle twitching, and coma are additional side effects.
Contact with PCP (particularly in the form of vapor) can irritate the skin, eyes, and mouth.

Long-term exposure to low levels such as those that occur in the workplace can cause damage to the liver, kidneys, blood, and nervous system.[1] Finally exposure to PCP is also associated with carcinogenic, renal, and neurological effects. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Toxicity Class classifies PCP in group B2 (probable human carcinogen).

Doesn’t sound like aspirin to me…

Study: 15 percent of US youth out of school, work
By PHILIP ELLIOTT
— Oct. 21, 2013 6:17 AM EDT

WASHINGTON (AP) — Almost 6 million young people are neither in school nor working, according to a study released Monday.

That’s almost 15 percent of those aged 16 to 24 who have neither desk nor job, according to The Opportunity Nation coalition, which wrote the report.

Other studies have shown that idle young adults are missing out on a window to build skills they will need later in life or use the knowledge they acquired in college. Without those experiences, they are less likely to command higher salaries and more likely to be an economic drain on their communities.

“This is not a group that we can write off. They just need a chance,” said Mark Edwards, executive director of the coalition of businesses, advocacy groups, policy experts and nonprofit organizations dedicated to increasing economic mobility. “The tendency is to see them as lost souls and see them as unsavable. They are not.”

NJ Faces Hefty Price Tag for Rail Tunnel, Transportation Projects

NJ Faces Hefty Price Tag for Rail Tunnel, Transportation Projects

Governor, Legislature need plan to fund Gateway Tunnel, Transportation Trust Fund by 2015

This is the first in a series of articles laying out the critical policy challenges that the next governor and Legislature will face, as well as their positions on these issues.

Two years from now, New Jersey’s governor and Legislature will not only have to come up with an $8 billion plan to fund the Transportation Trust Fund for another five years, but also $3 billion or more if they want New Jersey Transit trains to be able to use Amtrak’s Gateway Tunnel into New York’s Penn Station.

These are two of the most difficult fiscal challenges that the winner of the November 5 gubernatorial election will face, and Republican Gov. Chris Christie and his challenger, Sen. Barbara Buono (D-Middlesex), staked out opposing positions on the importance of a new rail tunnel long before the campaign began. (Magyar/NJSpotlight)

“Toilet Tax” rejected in Ridgewood

The Ridgewood Council rejected an ordinance that would have increased sewage fees for significant dischargers, welcome news to many restaurant owners in the Central Business District (CBD) who previously resisted the proposal.

“The sewer fees will not increase this year, but there will be further discussion of what will be done going forward,” Mayor Paul Aronsohn announced prior to the council’s unanimous vote to defeat the ordinance calling for the fee hike.

Considered by the village’s governing body in the latter portion of the summer, the proposed ordinance and its public hearing were continued from month to month until Ridgewood officials could discuss the increases with Ridgewood Chamber of Commerce leaders. Some downtown business owners, meanwhile, spoke publicly during council meetings and suggested the fees unfairly targeted CBD establishments.

“You have a handful of significant dischargers, people who utilize the system, and then you have thousands of other customers who utilize it far more,” said Paul Vagianos, whose East Ridgewood Avenue restaurant is billed an excessive discharge fee. “Those other customers aren’t charged. Only a handful of businesses and non-profits [are charged], most of them are small businesses and mom-and-pop operations.”

Expert tells Ridgewood officials: Chemical on utility poles not toxic

A consultant engaged by Public Service Electric & Gas (PSE&G) told Glen Rock and Ridgewood officials that the moisture sealant used on new utility poles in both towns is considered safe, likening its toxicity level to that of aspirin.

Glen Rock Mayor John van Keuren said last week that the Tennessee-based speaker – described as a tree preservative expert – delivered a PowerPoint presentation at an Oct. 11 meeting of municipal, county and state officials and PSE&G representatives.

The mayor said the “bottom line” of the talk was that the preservative – pentachlorophenol, or penta – is considered “quite safe, with no possible lingering toxic effects” and that “its production is very closely overseen by EPA (the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency).”

The meeting, held in Hackensack, was called in response to local concerns about the substance’s possible health impacts, following PSE&G’s Sept. 19 removal and replacement of stained soil under poles recently installed on Hope Street and South Maple Avenue in Ridgewood. The installations were part of the utility’s massive power and infrastructure upgrade project under way in both communities and neighboring towns since last spring.

Consumer Reports: ‘Stay Away From HealthCare.gov’
By Alec Torres
October 21, 2013 9:56 AM

Consumer Reports, which publishes reviews of consumer products and services, advised its readers to avoid the federal healthcare exchange “for at least another month if you can.” “Hopefully that will be long enough for its software vendors to clean up the mess they’ve made,” the magazine said, having tested the site themselves over the course of the past three weeks.

Noting that only 271,000 of the 9.47 million people who tried signing up in the first week managed to create an account, Consumer Reports then provided a few tips to those attempting to slog through the application process. From attempting successive logins because “error messages … may not always match reality” to checking your inbox frequently because if you miss an e-mail you’ll be timed out of the site and forced to start from square one, none of the suggestions guaranteed success.

The magazine has also released a string of scathing reviews. On October 1, the day the Obamacare exchanges went online, the magazine told people to be patient: “Don’t worry if you can’t sign up today or even within the next couple of weeks.” A week into enrollment, they urged again to “wait a couple weeks and hope that the site irons out its many problems” because the HealthCare.gov is “barely operational.”

With its latest media buy, NJEA has shelled out over $6M on top-of-the-ticket, legislative races

Its gubernatorial candidate may be on the ropes, but the New Jersey Education Association is not holding back in the upcoming New Jersey election and is already spending triple its previous totals in campaign efforts.

The union’s new super PAC, Garden State Forward, has spent or distributed more than $5 million for the governor and legislative races, according to the state’s Election Law Enforcement Commission. (Mooney/NJSpotlight)

NJ Transit troubled by rise in rail suicides

Some people lie on the tracks in the path of an oncoming train. Some walk defiantly in the direction of a train as it hurtles toward them, or stand in place until they can look directly into the eyes of the terrified engineer.

Others walk along the tracks listening to music through earbuds, purposefully oblivious to the approaching train that will end their life.

However they do it, suicides by train are on the upswing in New Jersey, leading NJ Transit and the state Department of Human Services to work together with a sense of urgency on new programs aimed at stemming the tragic trend.

According to NJ Transit, 27 people have been fatally struck by the agency’s trains so far this year. Confirmed or possible suicides accounted for 21 of those deaths; six have been classified as accidental or of undetermined cause. Of the nine deaths so far this year on NJ Transit’s rail lines in Bergen and Passaic counties, all but one have been classified as confirmed or possible suicides, said agency spokesman John Durso Jr.

Many North Jersey seniors must shop for new Medicare plans

About 80,000 seniors in New Jersey enrolled in HMO-like alternatives to traditional Medicare plans need to shop for new coverage because their plans are being terminated due to changes spurred by the nation’s new health care law.

Medicare Advantage plans are being discontinued and replaced by other coverage as private insurance companies respond to funding cuts to the Medicare Advantage program. Those cuts were implemented along with the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare.

More than 5,000 residents in Passaic County and 6,400 in Bergen are being notified that their plans will terminate at the end of the year, insurance officials said.

Medicare’s annual open enrollment period began Tuesday and continues through Dec. 7, but the discontinuation of a number of popular Medicare Advantage policies has prompted earlier-than-usual shopping from seniors wanting to find coverage that’s similar
