Premiums for young healthy people will jump in 45 states under Obamacare
By JOEL GEHRKE | OCTOBER 19, 2013 AT 2:23 PM

Young people in 45 states will see their health insurance premiums increase under Obamacare because the law relies on the money they pay into the system to offset the cost of caring for older enrollees, according to a new study.

Virginia leads the pack, as individuals aged 27 and under will see their health insurance premiums jump by 252.5 percent — $416.55 — according to the Heritage Foundation’s Center for Data Analysis.

Virginians under the age of 50 will see their premiums jump by an even greater percentage, rising from $228 to $991.03.

Such increases are not a surprise to the law’s architects. “I have always said when looking at this bill, that if I were a young person, I can see elements of this bill that I wouldn’t like in the short run,” Henry Aaron, vice chairman of the D.C. health exchange, told the Washington Examiner last November.

For thousands, keeping your old health insurance policy isn’t an option
Published: October 18, 2013
By Anna Gorman and Julie Appleby — Kaiser Health News

WASHINGTON — Health insurance companies are sending notices of cancellation to hundreds of thousands of people who buy their own coverage, frustrating some consumers who want to keep what they have and forcing others to buy more expensive policies.

Insurers say the cancellations are necessary because the policies fall short of what the Affordable Care Act requires starting Jan. 1. Most are ending policies sold after the law passed in March 2010. At least a few are canceling plans sold to people with pre-existing medical conditions.

By all accounts, new policies to replace the canceled ones offer consumers better coverage, in some cases for comparable cost – especially after the inclusion of federal subsidies for those who qualify. They cover 10 “essential” benefits the law now requires, including prescription drugs, mental health treatment and maternity care, and they generally have lower thresholds for what consumers will have to spend before the plan picks up the full cost of treatment.

But the cancellation notices, which began arriving in August, have shocked many consumers in light of President Barack Obama’s promise that people could keep their plans if they liked them.

Changing school vote not in step with village ‘values’

Changing school vote not in step with village ‘values’
Joyce and Keith Schnaars

To the editor:

The proposal to trade the public vote in Ridgewood for a $43K savings on a $92 million school budget and separate the direct partnership with the community and families of children in the public schools marginalizes the responsibility of citizens of Ridgewood.

This community values education and how and where its tax dollars are spent. This differentiates Ridgewood from other communities.

School business and politics should not mix
Wilkin Santana

To the editor:

My wife and I love Ridgewood, and we are happily raising our 2-year-old daughter in the village. We will be here at least for the next 30 years to come.

However, we are not in favor of increased taxes without fair justification or mixing politics and education. It is sad and frustrating to read the school board is seriously considering moving the April school board election to November, where it’s all about politics and national political issues. This will result in putting Ridgewood schools issues to the back burner, just to save a few thousands.

Reader says High Density housing is profitable.

Clock_Ridgewood_theridgewopodblog.net_

Reader says High Density housing is profitable.

Battle lines have not been drawn. The citizens group is not in a battle with developers and never has been. They are trying to urge the Planning Board to proceed cautiously and keep in mind what the long term effects of changing the zoning in large areas of town will lead to. This is about the potential for more developments down the road.

What most people don’t understand, is that by asking for densities that are way above what our village currently allows, there is no easy way to accommodate these developments. Our Planning Board must create a much larger zone ( more than 3x larger than these 4 developments ) and they must change the densities in this entire zone. By doing this, any property owner within this new zone (like Ulrich kitchens, Becker Body and Fender Co., or Brake-O-Rama) can be developed into a high density housing complex. High Density housing is profitable.

Who is to say that these properties will not develop once the law has changed and the opportunity is presented? We would all be foolish not to consider what our town will look like when all of these properties have been built up. At the end of the day these four developments are just a drop in the bucket. It is what comes next that we should be cautioning our PB to examine.

Outage Disrupts East Coast Internet Traffic

Outage Disrupts East Coast Internet Traffic
Updated Oct. 19, 2013 6:35 p.m. ET

Internet users from Brooklyn to Philadelphia suffered slow to nonexistent service Saturday after equipment at a New York-area network hub broke down, disrupting service for several hours.

A spokesman for the Internet service provider Level 3 Communications Inc. LVLT +0.25% said technicians were working quickly to fix the outage, which cascaded down to customers using Cablevision Systems Corp.’s CVC -0.45% Optimum service and Time Warner Cable Inc., TWC -0.36% among others.

“Maintaining a high-performing, efficient network for customers is our top priority,” Level 3 spokesman Jon Paul McLeary said. “At this time, we do not have an estimated time when service will be restored.”

RHS Girls Tennis: Ridgewood claims elusive sectional title
Friday, October 18, 2013
BY  RON FOX
CORRESPONDENT
The Ridgewood News

Each achievement was a team effort, for certain. However, there is no way the contributions of the Ridgewood High School doubles squads in the state tennis tournament can be overlooked.

The Maroons gained perhaps their biggest victory in nearly a decade with a 3-2 victory at top-seeded Livingston in Monday’s North 1, Group 4 final. Somehow, the previously immovable object was pushed aside with a mighty effort.

“We’ve lost to Livingston the last four years [in state play], or maybe even longer than that,” RHS head coach Medha Kirtane said on Tuesday.

In fact, the streak had reached five straight years – including four meetings in the sectional final and one in the semifinals – before Ridgewood vanquished the five-time defending champion Lancers for its first North 1, Group 4 title since 2005.

The Ridgewood News

Vince and Beth Parrillo continue family tradition

When Vince and Beth Parrillo of Ridgewood drive to the Civil War Drill Hall Theater to work with the Players Guild of Leonia on their current show, “I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change,” it seems like they’re going home. The couple met through the theater group, married in 1973 and have been involved with the company ever since.

For this production, which opens tonight and runs through Nov. 3, Vince is the director and Beth is a producer, choreographer and costume designer.

The musical was the second longest running off-Broadway show with more than 5,000 performances. The secret for its popularity might be the almost universal appeal of its themes.
