Talks between Ridgewood and Glen Rock officials regarding a potential shared vehicle maintenance building continue to move along a smooth and steady track, according to Ridgewood Deputy Mayor Albert Pucciarelli.
In his most recent report on the village ad-hoc committee formed to explore the future of Ridgewood’s fleet services facility, the deputy mayor said a meeting between officials from both towns yielded positive discussion.
“Glen Rock remains very positive about co-developing the repair facility … There’s a nice symmetry there,” Pucciarelli said at the Aug. 14 Village Council meeting.
“Cory Booker is willing to compromise on anything — as long as it results in personal political gain. I am running for the United States Senate to provide a voice for the people of New Jersey and protect their individual liberty.”
METUCHEN, NJ – Mayor Steve Lonegan, Republican candidate for the United States Senate, took the occasion surrounding Senator Rand Paul’s upcoming endorsement to point out a difference between Senator Paul and Cory Booker.
Lonegan said, “Senator Paul has been outspoken against President Obama’s spying on individuals, his foreign policy and his failure to lead our nation. I am proud to stand with Senator Paul, who continually fights to protect your individual liberty and is a staunch opponent of military intervention in Syria.”
“Cory Booker says that he wants to talk about the issues but instead of providing an opinion on President Obama’s proposed intervention in Syria, he falls back on his only true stance — he supports the President, whatever the decision.”
“Cory Booker is willing to compromise on anything — as long as it results in personal political gain. I am running for the United States Senate to provide a voice for the people of New Jersey and protect their individual liberty,” Lonegan said.
Lonegan served as Bogota Mayor for twelve years, winning three times in a town that gave Barack Obama 67.5 percent of the vote in 2012. He served for seven years as state director of Americans for Prosperity New Jersey, where he helped defeat liberal attempts to expand big government. Steve Lonegan is the conservative Republican candidate in the New Jersey special election for the United States Senate. Lonegan stands firmly on the bedrock conservative values of small government, fiscal responsibility and individual liberty.
Why Is Education Commissioner Cerf Standing In Way Of School Choice?
September 4,2013
Ridgewood NJ, Today marks the beginning of another school year for most New Jersey students. Unlike Ridgewood, far too many New Jersey school kids will find themselves trapped for another year in some of our worst schools with no way out—no way to attend a better school that affords them the kind of opportunity for the future they deserve. This is unacceptable. Today, New Jersey should be embracing school choice and allowing parents the option to enroll their kids in schools that are not failing them.
Trenton, Newark, Camden , Atlantic City …..
Three months ago, however, Education Commissioner Christopher Cerf denied 850 New Jersey children the chance to attend the school of their choice. For years, the New Jersey Department of Education had been negotiating with two online charter schools to open up in the Garden State. The two schools jumped through all of the bureaucratic hoops, received government approval last spring, and even started hiring teachers and enrolling students.
But, at the very last minute, Commissioner Cerf stepped in and revoked the schools’ applications, claiming that there’s insufficient evidence that online learning improves student performance. Any New Jersey schoolchild could tell Commissioner Cerf that the evidence will continue to be insufficient if he doesn’t give virtual schools a chance in New Jersey. It’s elementary logic.
Think of the future ,thousands of New Jersey children are stuck in a failing public school with little opportunity to escape. Even our state’s brick-and-mortar charter schools are often inaccessible since they are subject to enrollment caps, rendering many children’s future subject to the luck of a lottery. Online learning, on the other hand, would expand school choice to any New Jersey schoolchild with an Internet connection. This new frontier of education is something that the Garden State should embrace, not shun for an outdated one-size-fits-all model that is failing too many of our kids.
Sadly, it’s too late for the 850 students to access online school choice this year since the two virtual schools’ application have already been denied. However, it’s not over yet. Americans for Prosperity – New Jersey will continue to push forward for a virtual school to open up next year. New Jersey schoolchildren have been waiting much too long for the guarantee of a quality education they deserve.
Meanwhile, call Commissioner Cerf at 609-292-4450! Urge him to stop impeding school choice and preventing New Jersey kids from being able to access the education they deserve!
Cake Boss Buddy Valastro backs Christie named chairman of the Small Business for Christie coalition.

Riidgewood NJ, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) has received a boost from the world of reality television with an endorsement from the star of the TLC television show “Cake Boss.”
Christie announced last Thursday afternoon that Buddy Valastro, the owner of Carlo’s Bakery and star of the reality show “Cake Boss” will become chairman of the Small Business for Christie coalition.
The announcement, made in front of Valastro’s bakery in Hoboken, was part of a broader endorsement of the incumbent by small business leaders, including the National Federation of Independent Businesses.
Valastro told the HuffPost that people need to forget about Christie’s weight, as undue attention on the matter could have an adverse effect on young people.(https://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/09/03/cake-boss-chris-christie_n_3860135.html)
“It is kind of sick, the world we live in,” . “People talk about his weight, and we wonder why kids bully kids.”
Valastro, called Christie a “straight shooter,” said that his main reason for backing the Republican has been Christie’s outreach to small businesses as governor. Valastro said that while he does not agree with Christie on every issue, he believes the Republican has done a good job and deserves another term. ( https://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/09/03/cake-boss-chris-christie_n_3860135.html )
Christie currently leads Democratic nominee Barbara Buono by 20 points in a recent poll.
According to Valastro “Governor Christie has kept his promise to remain committed to improving our state’s economic climate throughout the past three and a half years,” . “By cutting taxes and red tape, getting our state budget under control without raising taxes, and fighting for real, effective tax relief, this governor has created an environment in New Jersey that gives small businesses a chance to thrive,”

High schools’ early starts deprive students of crucial sleep

The Record
Shea Harris will be starting his junior year of high school in just a few days, and he’s still not quite sure what his morning routine will look like now that Clifton High School will start 10 minutes earlier than last year.
“I don’t know how we’re going to deal with the morning,” he said.
One thing the 16-year-old does know: the new 7:29 start time is unlikely to change his nighttime routine. He doesn’t plan to go to bed any earlier.
It’s only 10 minutes, but when it comes to teenagers and sleep, every minute lost counts, and it can cost them. Teenagers who do not get enough sleep risk an increase in anxiety, depression and weight gain, according to Dr. Tracy Carbone, director of The Valley Hospital Pediatric Sleep Disorders and Apnea Center.
High school students’ ability to concentrate, remember what is discussed and do well in class are all directly related to their quantity of sleep, she said –

Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Martin Dempsey Can’t Say What U.S. is Seeking in Syria
BY: Washington Free Beacon Staff
September 3, 2013 3:56 pm
Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Martin Dempsey couldn’t answer what exactly the U.S. was seeking in Syria Tuesday during questioning from Sen. Bob Corker (R., Tenn.) about a resolution authorizing military action there:
DEMPSEY: The answer to whether I support additional support for the moderate opposition is yes.
CORKER: And this authorization will support those activities in addition to responding to the weapons of mass destruction.
DEMPSEY: I don’t know how the resolution will evolve, but I support –
CORKER: What you’re seeking. What is it you’re seeking?
Pew: Americans against Syria strike, 48%-29%, fear backlash
By PAUL BEDARD | SEPTEMBER 3, 2013 AT 2:16 PM
President Obama faces stiff resistance from the public to a military attack, with a new Pew Research Center poll revealing that 48 percent oppose and only 29 percent approve of U.S. retaliation for Syria’s use of chemical weapons.
“Obama has significant ground to make up in his own party,” added Pew. The percentages mirror the national average, 48 percent opposed to 29 percent in favor. Republicans are more divided: 35 percent favoring airstrikes and 40 percent opposed.
Booker’s Qualifications to Lecture on Crime Reduction Challenged
METUCHEN, NJ – “Cory Booker claims to have made Newark safer, but the facts speak for themselves: nine shooting deaths in the last ten days and hundreds dead since Booker took office 7 years ago. Cory Booker has failed the people of Newark and now wants to do to America what he’s done to his City. He has been unable to quell rampant violence and instead of finishing the job there, he now travels the state and the country holding fundraisers with his Hollywood friends so that he can get a promotion.”
METUCHEN, NJ – Mayor Steve Lonegan, Republican candidate for the United States Senate, made the following comments at the Rutherford Labor Day Street Fair regarding Cory Booker’s recent portrayal of himself as an expert reducing crime.
Lonegan said, “Cory Booker claims to have made Newark safer, but the facts speak for themselves: nine shooting deaths in the last ten days and hundreds dead since Booker took office 7 years ago. Cory Booker has failed the people of Newark and now wants to do to America what he’s done to his City. He has been unable to quell rampant violence and instead of finishing the job there, he now travels the state and the country holding fundraisers with his Hollywood friends so that he can get a promotion.”
“Booker should focus on the needs of his city and put his political ambition aside.”
If the sweeping predictions made in the ‘60s, ‘70s and early ‘80s had come to pass, the holiday known as Labor Day might now be a dim, back-in-the-day memory.
Technology breakthroughs were going to let us work faster and more efficiently. Our work week would shrink – at least by a day, perhaps two. More work would be done and workers would have much more leisure time. (Star-Ledger)
Wave of reforms result in lower salaries for police and firefighters
After years of winning at the negotiating table, cops and firefighters across New Jersey are losing and walking away these days with much less money.
Since January of 2011 — following a wave of reforms that capped municipal spending and arbitration awards — police and firefighter unions have signed at least 160 new contracts, according to the Public Employment Relations Commission. (Renshaw/Star-Ledger)
While America was resting from its labors, the countdown to Obamacare began.
In just 27 days, the Obamacare exchanges are scheduled to open, and people who don’t get health insurance through their employers (or through the government already) will start buying coverage.
Sixteen states are doing their own insurance exchanges, while the federal government is running exchanges in 34 states.
Many states have been aggressively advertising and promoting their exchanges. But there is still a lot we don’t know. Several questions we’re still asking:
How many insurers will participate?
So far, the number of insurance companies offering plans through the exchanges varies widely from state to state. And in some, it’s nearly chaotic. Consider Mississippi. Heritage expert Alyene Senger details that state’s woes: Initially, only two insurers applied to offer coverage in the exchange—and they weren’t even going to provide coverage for the entire state. Humana later said it would provide coverage to the uncovered counties. But it remains that the vast majority of Mississippians in the exchange will only be able to do business with one insurer.
Which doctors and hospitals will be covered?
Exchange customers may not have access to the same doctors and hospitals that other patients have. Senger writes that “limited networks have resulted in major hospitals being excluded in California’s exchange.”
How much will coverage cost?
Most people probably don’t know yet how much their exchange insurance plans will cost. Senger warns that premiums aren’t the only cost—people could also see co-pays and deductibles go up.
For example, Ohio announced that premiums in their exchange will increase on average by 41 percent compared to the premiums that Ohio companies reported at the end of 2012. In addition to premium projections, the Ohio Department of Insurance also provided a projection for the increase in the total cost of coverage, called the average index rate, which is projected to be a dramatic 83 percent increase.
How safe will your personal information be?
Obamacare “navigators” will be helping people sign up for the exchanges—and they don’t have to go through background checks to get those jobs. Security of the data hub that will house Americans’ tax filings, Social Security reports, and other government data has been delayed, and there have been reports that the Administration is cutting corners on data privacy.
Lawmakers could prevent this convoluted, unpopular, unworkable law from wreaking havoc on the health care system if they would defund Obamacare.
Ridgewood’s hearing with BPU scheduled for Sept. 9

At Ridgewood’s upcoming hearing before the Board of Public Utilities (BPU), set for Sept. 9 in Hackensack, the state regulatory agency will review the village’s concerns with PSE&G’s regional transmission upgrade project. The utility plans to install a total of 90 65-foot-tall utility poles with 69-kilovolt lines in some residential neighborhoods in Ridgewood.
The hearing will take place at 6 p.m. in the Freeholders’ Public Meeting Room at the Bergen County Administration Building, according to Village Attorney Matt Rogers.
Although it is rare for municipalities to take their complaints with PSE&G to the BPU, Ridgewood’s case isn’t the first time that a community has had concerns over a project. In Montclair in 2011, residents disputed a PSE&G project on a local street, citing concerns similar to those of Ridgewood residents living on Hope Street and Spring Avenue.
Montclair’s hearing with the BPU did not end as many residents had hoped: PSE&G began installing replacement utility poles and new higher voltage lines to serve a country club and some homes in nearby Glen Ridge. As part of that project, service people cut down 100-year-old trees on Gray Street in Montclair, where the lines were being installed.
