Meet John, one of our Client Care Representatives at Ridgewood Veterinary Hospital
September 4,2013

Ridgewood NJ, Meet John, one of our Client Care Representatives at Ridgewood Veterinary Hospital. Last night, Bookends Bookstore invited Ridgewood Veterinary Hospital to attend Lil Bub’s signing of her new book called “Lil Bub’s Lil Book”.

Lil Bub is an Internet Celebrity cat. She is a “perma-kitten”, a dwarf and polydactyl cat. Her tongue always hangs out because of her short lower jaw and toothlessness, but her appetite is unaffected. She also suffers from a rare bone disorder called osteopetrosis, for which she takes medication.

Many came out for Lil Bub’s appearance and to get a signed copy of her new book. John was there to greet the attendees and hand out Ridgewood Veterinary Hospital notepads, chip clips, pet magazines as well as a flyer for our upcoming Adopt-A-Pet Day on September 29th from 11am-4pm. It was a great night! If you were unable to make it, Bookends still has signed copies of “Lil Bub’s Lil Book”.

Rep. Scott Garrett not convinced that it is in the United States’ best interest to intervene militarily in Syria
September  1, 2013

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Rep. Scott Garrett (R-NJ), founder and Chairman of the Congressional Constitution Caucus, issued the following statement after President Obama decided the United States should take military action against Syria.

“Though I am glad the President is going to seek congressional authorization, as outlined by the Constitution, he has not convinced the American public that it is in the United States’ best interest to intervene militarily in Syria.  I side with the American public.  Our interests are paramount, and I’m disappointed that the executive branch has shown so little clarity in its decision making regarding Syria and how military action furthers our nation’s interest.”

WASHINGTON — Even as Congress took a step Wednesday toward authorizing the use of force in Syria, a growing number of lawmakers spoke out strongly against a U.S. military strike and warned that it would draw the United States into an escalating conflict that could spread throughout the Middle East.

An anti-war demonstrator leaves a House Foreign Affairs Committee hearing in Washington on Wednesday during testimony by Secretary of State John Kerry.

The Senate Foreign Relations Committee approved a resolution for a likely missile attack against Syrian President Bashar Assad in retaliation for his alleged use of chemical weapons two weeks ago, but it prohibited any involvement of U.S. troops.

But the Senate committee’s 10-7 vote indicated deep divisions within Congress that President Obama still must overcome in his quest to demonstrate to Syria, Iran and other nations that the use of chemical or nuclear arms is unacceptable. The measure is expected to reach the Senate floor next week, although the timing for a vote is uncertain.

Ridgewood NJ, Plans to finance construction of a parking garage using revenues from a proposed ground lease of the Village owned “Gilsenan/Gap” property appear to have come to a halt.

Although three (3) firms had “pre-registered,” no proposals to lease the “Gilsenan/Gap” property, and construct a retail building thereupon, were received during Thursday morning’s scheduled proposal opening.

Village Council members will likely discuss next steps, including a possible re-advertisement for proposals, during their upcoming September 11 Public Work Session.

Ridgewood Police Chief John M. Ward warns of latest Phone Scam

Ridgewood Police Chief John M. Ward warns of latest  Phone Scam
September 4,2013

Ridgewood NJ, The Ridgewood Police has experienced a number of “phone scam” reports from residents over the summer months. Below are two examples of phone scams that have been recently reported by several residents.

The “Grandparent Scam” often involves a person who calls posing as a family member in trouble. He or she places a call to an older person and when they pick up, the scammer will say something along the lines of: “Hi Grandma, do you know who this is?” When the unsuspecting grandparent guesses the name of the grandchild the scammer most sounds like, the scammer has established a fake identity without having done any background research. The fake grandchild will usually ask for money to solve some unexpected problem (arrested and need bail money, overdue rent, payment for car repairs, etc.), to be paid via Western Union or MoneyGram, which don’t always require identification to collect. At the same time, the scam artist will beg the grandparent “please don’t tell my parents, they would kill me.” The fake grandchild will generally say they are in another state and may even say they are in another country on “vacation”.

In another recent scam the scammer places a call and has even left a voice message stating that they are from a government law enforcement agency. The name of the agency is usually fake, for example: “National Bureau of Crime”. The scammer will advise the person that criminal complaints have been signed against them or a family member and unless they give money or personal identifying information, the charges will be “filed”. This scam is not aimed at the elderly and anyone can be a victim of this. Please understand that no legitimate law enforcement agency will ever contact you this way.

The Ridgewood Police asks that you spread the word about these scams to your friends and family (especially the elderly). We also ask that you report suspicious phone calls to us so that we can continue to investigate them.

Chief John M. Ward

Ridgewood School District readies for new year

Ridgewood School District readies for new year
Wednesday September 4, 2013, 2:48 PM
BY  LAURA HERZOG
STAFF WRITER
The Ridgewood News

The Ridgewood school district will be adjusting to some big changes this year.

Some of these changes relate to circumstance (the retiring or resigning of employees), some to government mandates and others to district initiatives in the realm of technology or emotional well-being, as well as district goals to decrease spending on energy and out-of-district tuitions for special needs students. Many are a combination of several factors.

Technology at the forefront

The hiring of a technology manager is part of a push to ready RHS for a 1:1 technology initiative planned for the 2014-2015 school year; an attempt to supply each student with a personal electronic device for school use. The district is planning to supply each student with a Chromebook, Superintendent Daniel Fishbein said.

“If you go to the 1:1 initiative, you’re going to have that many more machines hitting your network,” he said. “You’ve got to be sure the [network] can handle it.”

Lonegan : Missile Strike Would Be Act of War

Lonegan : Missile Strike Would Be Act of War
September 4, 2013

“The American people will not be dragged into another ill-advised war. A missile strike would increase the likelihood of both an al-Qaeda regime in Syria and the likelihood that the President would call for boots on the ground. The American people do not want another war. We cannot afford another war.”

METUCHEN, NJ – Mayor Steve Lonegan, Republican candidate for the United States Senate, responded to yesterday’s Senate hearing regarding missile strikes in Syria.

In response to the hearing, Lonegan said, “Whether Secretary Kerry admits it or not, a missile strike is an act of war.”

1187041_557750874278679_2043192448_n

Lonegan continued, “The American people will not be dragged into another ill-advised war. A missile strike would increase the likelihood of both an al-Qaeda regime in Syria and the likelihood that the President would call for boots on the ground. The American people do not want another war. We cannot afford another war.”

“I will continue to stand for the interests of the American people in our foreign policy and for individual liberty at home. Cory Booker will not take a stand on this missile strike other than timidly deferring to President Obama’s whims.”

In the hearing, Secretary of State John Kerry declared, “President Obama is not asking America to go to war,” while also admitting that an escalation of violence in Syria could require American troops on the ground, and General Martin Dempsey conceded that a proposed strike would weaken Syria’s overall military capability, including Assad’s ability to fend off al-Qaeda rebels.

Lonegan served as Bogota Mayor for twelve years, winning three times in a town that gave Barack Obama 67.5 percent of the vote in 2012. He served for seven years as state director of Americans for Prosperity New Jersey, where he helped defeat liberal attempts to expand big government. Steve Lonegan is the conservative Republican candidate in the New Jersey special election for the United States Senate. Lonegan stands firmly on the bedrock conservative values of small government, fiscal responsibility and individual liberty.

Senate Breaks Own Rules Democrats Rush to Vote on Syria War

Senate Breaks Own Rules Democrats Rush to Vote on Syria War
by Josh Rogin Sep 4, 2013 2:53 PM EDT

Senate Democratic leadership tossed aside the rules for moving legislation with regard to the resolution authorizing the use of military force against Syria, angering some Republicans and creating confusion on Capitol Hill in the run-up to the war vote.

The Senate Foreign Relations Committee narrowly approved a modified war resolution Wednesday afternoon by vote of 10–7 with one member, Sen. Ed Markey (D-MA), voting present. The committee’s action allows Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) to bring the measure to the floor as early as Monday, following a break for the Jewish holidays. That would allow a vote by the full Senate as soon as Wednesday, giving the Senate a chance to pass a war resolution before the House has a chance to craft and pass a resolution of its own.

Media Sees Racist People Everywhere

Media Sees Racist People Everywhere
By Ann Coulter | August 29, 2013 | 18:48

The media’s fixation on the Trayvon Martin case, while ignoring much more brutal crimes with clearer racial motivations, is a return to pre-O.J. America.

The thesis of my book, “Mugged: Racial Demagoguery From the Seventies to Obama” — out in paperback this week! — is that after decades of liberals play-acting Racist America, wherein they cast themselves as civil rights champions, and other, random white people as Bull Connor (a Democrat), it all ended with the O.J. verdict.

That’s when white America said, That’s it. The white guilt bank is shut down. It was one of the best things that ever happened to America — especially for black people.

But then in 2007, Barack Obama brought it all back. In order to immunize the most left-wing presidential candidate the nation has ever seen, the Non-Fox Media went into overdrive reporting their fantasies of America as a nation full of racists, constantly terrorizing innocent blacks.

Of course, once Republicans got the Democrats to stop terrorizing black people, there was no one else doing it. Nonetheless, for decades, the media would highlight every apparent white-on-black crime, treating each such incident as the Crime of the Century.

White-on-black crimes were, and are, freakishly rare. But the media weren’t showcasing these one-off events as man-bites-dog stories, but rather as dog-bites-man stories in a universe brimming with packs of rabid dogs. According to liberals, whites attacking blacks was an epidemic — a nationwide “cancer,” in the words of erstwhile New York City Mayor Ed Koch.

In December 1986, a gang of white toughs were roaming around Howard Beach, Queens, brawling with anyone they met. They beat up an off-duty white fireman. They attacked a couple of Hispanics. But it was only when the young delinquents fought with three black men — Cedric Sandiford, Timothy Grimes and Michael Griffith — that they secured their place in history and became the literary event of the season!

Perfect Example by long time NJ Columnist Bob Ingle : Lonegan’s appeal to bigots not worthy of New Jersey

Sometimes it’s hard to determine if Republican Steve Lonegan is serious about wanting to replace the late Frank R. Lautenberg in the U.S. Senate or is auditioning for a reality show about an out-of-touch pol whose life’s ambition is to do mediocre stand-up.

Over the years, Lonegan and I have had conservations on a wide range of topics. Nobody sticks it to big government, needless bureaucracy or corrupt politicians better than he does. (Ingle/Gannett)

Its different this time : Sen. Bob Menendez’s performance to be judged on the world stage

WASHINGTON CORRESPONDENT
The Record

Completing his evolution from the anti-war skeptic that New Jersey first elected to the Senate in 2006, Sen. Bob Menendez took a lead role Tuesday in the push to attack Syria and was working personally to write the resolution authorizing force.

The role is arguably the biggest Menendez has played in more than two decades in Congress and, if he succeeds in bringing a majority of skeptical senators to agreement, would permanently put an end to questions he faced about whether he was qualified to fill a crucial committee chairmanship.

Like many of his fellow Demo¬crats who had once railed against federal policy toward Iraq — including President Obama and Secretary of State John Kerry, Menendez’s predecessor as chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations

Committee — Menendez takes pains to explain how Syria is different.

Car Seat Safety: A How-To Guide

ChildSafetySeatGuideMain

Car Seat Safety: A How-To Guide

Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death and injury for all children.  Child restraints, or car seats, reduce the risk of injury by 71% to 82% and reduce the risk of death by 28% in comparison to children in seat belts alone.   Booster seats reduce the risk of nonfatal injuries by 45% among 4 to 8 year olds.

All vehicle occupants need to be properly restrained by seat belts or child safety seats to prevent injury in case of a sudden stop, swerve or crash.  Seat belts and car seats contact the strongest parts of the body, spread crash forces over a wide area, help the body slow down and protect the brain and spinal cord.

Did you know 3 out of 4 car seats are installed incorrectly?

Before you install your car seat, be sure to read both the car seat instruction manual and your vehicle’s owner manual. Also consider having an expert check the seat. The service is free and only a step away. To find a certified technician, call (866) SEAT-CHECK or click here.

The best car seat is one that:

Fits your child;
Fits the vehicle;
And you will use correctly every trip!

Research tells us that safety belts and car seats are the most effective devices in preventing serious injuries and deaths in vehicle crashes.  All 50 states and the District of Columbia have laws that require child seat use; however, numerous gaps and inconsistencies exist. AAA believes that closing loopholes in existing state laws and educating the public about proper car seat and restraint use are essential to preventing child passenger injuries and deaths.

For more than a century, AAA has worked to foster a safe environment for travelers through education, research and advocacy. Since its founding, AAA has been a leader in developing and supporting educational and safety programs for motorists, pedestrians, cyclists and children.
