The Record

The winds of Sandy, the floods of Irene and the tree-snapping weight of a freak October snowstorm will likely hit North Jersey residents again in coming years — this time as electricity rate hikes put in place to help pay off more than $1 billion in damage wreaked on the state’s power grid.

Regulators will soon be reviewing paperwork documenting expenses incurred by power companies in those and two other storms from 2011 and 2012 — from wages paid to thousands of repair workers to the cost of tons of replacement parts — to decide how much can be passed along to utility customers.

Reader explains why Ken Gabbert was removed

Gabbert was in over his head and had no clue as to civil service procedure.

If he sought legal advice and was misinformed, the labor attorney should go as well. Gabbert was the last choice of the council at that time, and his initial salary was lowballed with a promise of a good pay raise if things went well.

He is well connected in the republican party which put him at odds with Paul Aronsohn.

It is well known that Keith Killion lost the election because of Gabberts pay raise, if Tom Richie was up for election he would have been sent packing as well.

So know Gabbert had no skirt to hide behind ( so to speak). Lets face it you get what you pay for, he was a bargain basement administrator, and he did a bargain basement job, for a bargain basement salary.

20-somethings jump into super PACs
By ANDREA DRUSCH | 8/24/13 5:09 PM EDT

What’s cool for America’s youth this election cycle isn’t putting an Obama poster on your wall or tattooing the Romney R on your face. It’s starting your own super PAC.

In 2012, groups like Restore Our Future, American Crossroads and Priorities USA spent millions — reshaping the campaign landscape around the chase of big — often older and male — donors. Now, America’s youth are ready and eager to get in on the game.

In the past month alone, four super PACs were formed by people younger than 35 with the intention of advocating for young people. Often, the idea is to push back against political parties they say are drifting off course.

“When we’re talking about people our age, in their mid-20s to 30s, a lot of the candidates don’t represent exactly what we want,” said Sarah Ponn, 25, president of Pass the Torch PAC in Manchester, N.H.

Frustrated with what she sees as parties and politicians that are disinterested in the needs of young people, Ponn, 25, started a super PAC with two of her friends.

She says her group wants to rebrand the message of the Republican Party. They want to see the economy back on track, student loan rates fixed and politicians taking their focus off of social issues. “We’re trying to steer clear of issues like abortion and gay marriage,” she said. “With a lot of candidates … it’s hard to separate out what they really stand for and to get behind them for everything.

“That’s why we went with a super PAC,” Ponn added. “It gives us that ability to step outside the party lines.”

It’s a sentiment young super PACs from both parties share: National candidates either don’t align with their views, or they don’t prioritize the issues that matter to them.

The weakest generation?

The weakest generation?
By Dana Milbank, Friday, August 23, 2:05 PM

In my mother’s telling, I exist because of the March on Washington .

Her account went something like this: In 1963, she was a student at Goddard College, an experimental school in Vermont that attracted the forerunners of the hippies. My father had come to Goddard the previous year, and though my mom first noticed him throwing peas in the dining hall (this seems to be an inherited trait), she didn’t meet him, she said, until that day on the Mall 50 years ago this week, when Goddard students who had arrived separately executed a daft plan to meet near the Washington Monument.

Alas, my father, when I asked him about it this week, had no such recollection. My mother died five years ago, so I’ll never know whether her account — my founding narrative — is apocryphal, or whether memory of it has been clouded by things people did to their minds in the ’60s. Perhaps it doesn’t matter. Whether they first met that day or not, my future parents, 20 years old at the time, were both there for the signal event of their generation.

“I can still see the scene,” my father told me, recalling his spot along the south side of the reflecting pool, from which he could see the speakers at the Lincoln Memorial and hear the speeches clearly. “When people talk about Martin Luther King, that’s my connection. It’s a small connection — no handshake or anything — but I’m proud to have been there.”

I envy him that connection, to a cause that stirred so many Americans and defined a generation. My generation, Generation X, has no equivalent.

The Valley Hospital’s Consumer Health Information Service is here to help you!
August 22, 2013

Ridgewood NJ,  The Valley Hospital’s Consumer Health Information Service can help you access important healthcare literature when you need it.  All you need to do is put in a request – by phone, via email, or in person in the Medical Library – and the Library’s trained staff completes a comprehensive literature search, selects and copies all pertinent materials and sends the packet of information to the person who has made the request.  The service is both confidential and free of charge.

Although it is easy to use Google to search for medical information, how can you be sure that the information you receive is correct?  How do you know if the web site you are on is reputable and the information is correct?  Our Medical Library staff are expert researchers who will provide you with medically accurate information from trustworthy sources.

“By providing the public with up-to-date, comprehensive information about conditions and associated treatment options, we help people be better informed and prepared to make decisions about their healthcare,” said Claudia Allocco, M.L.S., Director of Library Services.  “Let us do the work for you to relieve your anxiety and stress at a time that may be very vulnerable.”

The Valley Hospital’s Consumer Health Information Service can be reached by calling 201-447-8285, by faxing 201-447-8602 or by emailing [email protected].

Skepticism over Obama’s effort to rein in college costs
Friday August 23, 2013, 11:46 PM
BY  PATRICIA ALEX AND LESLIE BRODY
STAFF WRITERS
The Record

For many middle-class families struggling to afford college, President Obama’s proposal to rein in those costs by linking federal aid to a new rating system amounts to little more than an abstraction.

“A proposal’s just a proposal,” said Emily Kerr, 20, of Maple Shade, who has put school on hold to work full time as a medical receptionist while she repays student loan debt she accrued at Burlington County College. “I’m not poor enough to go to school on grants, and I’m not rich enough to pay out of pocket.”

Kerr is looking for a second job that she hopes will provide enough income to allow her to return to school. “When it comes to paying for classes, I get very anxious.”

She is not alone. After a decade of escalating college tuition and fees, the middle-class anxiety is pervasive and immediate.

Michelle Ryan Lauto, 22, who grew up in Bogota and Northvale, has $8,000 in student debt but no college degree. She left Pace University after two years because of the costs. Now she is a nanny.

Lonegan Calls for Booker’s Transparency

large_LoneganTues

Lonegan Calls for Booker’s Transparency

“What is Cory Booker hiding? Cory Booker pontificates about fairness and transparency, but the people of New Jersey want action, not vapid, hollow rhetoric. New Jerseyans have had enough of liberal politicians who think they are better than everyone else. If Cory Booker really believes in fairness and transparency, he will take the time to make sure that his city complies with the New Jersey Open Public Records Act as soon as possible, and not a day after the special election.”

METUCHEN, NJ – Steve Lonegan, Republican candidate for the United States Senate, spoke out today about the city of Newark’s lack of cooperation with an Open Public Records Act (OPRA) request. A similar request was made for Mayor Lonegan’s records as mayor of Bogota, and was answered promptly as required by law (see attached document).

– OPRA Request to Bogota and Reply from Bogota
OPRA Request to Newark
– OPRA Reply from Newark
– OPRA Second Reply from Newark

Lonegan said, “When a mayor spends the people’s money, he or she ought to be accountable to the public. New Jersey law requires that these records be available upon request.”

The Lonegan campaign requested seven types documents from the city of Newark, relating to Newark as a whole and Cory Booker’s expenses as mayor. After unilaterally extending the deadline to August 14th, the day after the Democratic Primary, Newark did not even meet its self-granted deadline.

On August 15th, the Lonegan campaign received an email from the city of Newark, complying with the requests about Newark in general but completely ignoring the requests about Cory Booker’s expenses as mayor.

The Lonegan campaign has still not received an answer regarding those documents.

The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee thought it proper to have Lonegan’s expenses as mayor as potential ammo in this race. A review of the documents led to the following reply from the Bogota Clerk’s Office:

Mayor Lonegan had a tiny office which barely fit a desk and a chair; he had no employees, no per diem expenses, no travel, car, phone, credit card receipts, office expenditures; no cell phones; no computers and for several years, he refused payroll compensation for himself.

Lonegan served as Bogota Mayor for twelve years, winning three times in a town that gave Barack Obama 67.5 percent of the vote in 2012. He served for seven years as state director of Americans for Prosperity New Jersey, where he helped defeat liberal attempts to expand big government. Steve Lonegan is the conservative Republican candidate in the New Jersey special election for the United States Senate. Lonegan stands firmly on the bedrock conservative values of small government, fiscal responsibility and individual liberty.
