Mayor Aronsohn has been quoted as saying the reason for open session discussion is: “We wanted everyone to know what was happening in the interests of transparency.”

Ridgewood to ask state agency for hearing on utility poles

The Ridgewood News
The Village Council plans to bring its ongoing concerns about the PSE&G utility pole project to the state’s Board of Public Utilities (BPU).
Council members hope for a continued moratorium on pole installation and a future hearing in which the public and village officials can discuss the controversial project.
“The council decided last night that we will file a petition today with the BPU, effectively asking for a review and hearing. We will request that the BPU continue the moratorium through this process,” Mayor Paul Aronsohn said on Thursday. “Our expectation is that a BPU hearing would allow for village and public input.”
Earlier this week, Aronsohn said that putting power lines underground was “part of” what the village is looking into.
Several residents of Hope Street and Spring Avenue, where the poles are being placed, expressed support at Wednesday night’s council meeting for a BPU review of the project.
On its website, the BPU is described as a “regulatory agency whose responsibilities include oversight of the telecommunications industry in New Jersey.”
Reader says Aronsohn, Puccirelli & Hauck its all about Urbanization
Again, Aronsohn, Puccirelli & Hauck voting together. Again, a very public dressing down of a political adversary. This time they’ve actually succeeded in getting rid of someone that could challenge their personal agendas. I love Mrs. Hauck’s comment that there is “nothing underhanded going on here”. Really?
This is quite scary given the large scale construction projects scheduled for votes in the near future. These 3 want to build a huge hospital and huge apartment buildings and are beyond even attempting to hide their allegiances to the special interest groups with plans before the town. Look for these 3 to vote yes on everything.
Please come to the meetings and speak up. You are the last line of defense.

Ridgewood NJ, Two youths (identities & faces withheld for safety reasons) who looked down a storm sewer grate as they walked along a busy Ridgewood street on Thursday afternoon were surprised to see an undisclosed number of crisp $100 bills through the grate’s opening. An adult who was accompanying the youths telephoned the Ridgewood Police Department to report the youths’ find.
Ridgewood PD Sergeant Peter Bolten (left in photo) and Patrol Officer Shayne James (right in photos) arrived at the scene and used a Halligan bar to remove the grate and successfully recover the sizable sum of money.
The cash is currently being held at Ridgewood Police Headquarters pending identification of its rightful owner.
Obama wants to tack on $5-a-year phone tax to fund high-speed Internet in schools
critics blast ‘end run’ of Congress and ‘endless expansion of program at the expense of rate payers’

WASHINGTON — That’s one way to “cell” a fee hike.
Unwilling to ask Congress for extra funds to pay for high-speed Internet connections in schools, President Obama is instead looking to tack yet another charge on cellphones through the Federal Communications Commission.
The new program, called ConnectED, would expand an existing school-wiring effort and cost each cellphone user about $5 a year, said White House officials.
In New York City, the ubiquitous mobile devices already carry 10 separate city, state and federal fees and charges — and that doesn’t include sales taxes.
Obama is relying on the fee hike to avoid dealing with a Congress that White House deputy press secretary Josh Earnest yesterday described as “dysfunctional.”
“You would think that connecting schools to the information superhighway would be a pretty noncontroversial topic,” Earnest told reporters in Martha’s Vineyard, where the first family is on vacation.
“Unfortunately, we haven’t seen a lot of action in Congress, so the president has advocated an administrative, unilateral action to get this done.”
Administration officials said the added fee would sunset after three years after generating about $6 billion.

Women Voted The Valley Hospital as an America’s Best Hospital for Patient Experience
August 14, 2013
Ridgewood NJ, The Valley Hospital has received the 2013 Women’s Choice Award for being voted one of America’s Best Hospitals for Patient Experience by women. This distinction is the only award that identifies the country’s best healthcare institutions based on robust criteria that consider female patient satisfaction and what women say they want from a hospital including quality physician communications, responsiveness of nurses and support staff, cleanliness and trusted referrals from other women.
“Right now, the national conversation about health care is focused on politics, insurance companies, and ‘the bottom line,’ which ignores what matters most to the patient – their experience with health care providers,” says Delia Passi, CEO and founder of WomenCertified, and former publisher of Working Woman and Working Mother magazines. “We’re putting the power of choice in the woman’s hands with the information to simplify her choices.”
Hospitals named as America’s Best are then invited to join an elite network of brands, across multiple industries, which carry the Women’s Choice Award, symbolizing their commitment to women.
“We are proud to be recognized as one of the nation’s Best Hospitals for Patient Experience,” said Audrey Meyers, President and CEO of The Valley Hospital and Valley Health System. “It’s a testament to the priority Valley nurses, physicians and staff place on delivering high-quality, compassionate care to our patients and their families.”
“A woman expects more from a hospital experience and takes her role as the primary healthcare decision maker seriously,” Passi adds. “More than ever she is self-managing her care by choosing her hospital prior to choosing her doctors. This allows her more control over her hospital-stay outcome based on the quality of care she can expect from a Women’s Choice Award hospital.”
Hospitals qualify for the highly selective annual list of America’s Best Hospitals for Patient Experience based on an in-depth proprietary scoring process. The scoring incorporates a national, standardized survey of patients’ perspectives of hospital care reported by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems) and an analysis that weighs criteria identified as the most important to women for patient satisfaction. Additionally, the scoring incorporates WomenCertified’s in-depth research on customer satisfaction among women, including a joint study on customer satisfaction by gender conducted with the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.
The America’s Best Hospitals for Patient Experience by WomenCertified consists of four categories, with a total of 400 hospitals recognized nationwide. They include hospitals with up to 100 beds, 101-250 beds, 251-400 beds and 401-plus beds. The 100 best scores in each category determine the Award winners. WomenCertified accepts absolutely no payment in exchange for placement on the list.
“Recognizing the best hospitals nationwide that are women-friendly and align with women’s identified preferences is important to our mission at WomenCertified, where women help other women with tough, consumer decisions,” Passi concludes. “Most importantly, when a woman sees the Women’s Choice Award at her local hospital, she’ll know the hospital values her experience as a critical component of her and her loved one’s care.”
ABOUT THE VALLEY HOSPITAL
The Valley Hospital, a 451-bed, acute care, not-for-profit hospital located in Ridgewood, NJ, is part of Valley Health System, which also includes Valley Home Care and Valley Medical Group. Valley is an affiliate of NewYork-Presbyterian Healthcare System and the recipient of numerous awards and recognitions. These include 10 consecutive recognitions for service excellence by J.D. Power and Associates for inpatient and emergency department care, and two major awards for patient safety and quality care from the Leapfrog Group, which ranked Valley among the top hospitals in the nation. Valley is ranked No. 1 in NJ by Healthgrades for overall cardiac services, cardiac surgery, and coronary interventional procedures. Valley has also been honored twice with “Magnet” designation – the nursing profession’s highest honor. Key services include cardiology, oncology, women’s and children’s services, emergency care, orthopedics, and neurosciences.

Stanley Kober steps down as VFW Commander in Ho-Ho-Kus after eight years
Thursday, August 15, 2013
STAFF WRITER
Ho-Ho-Kus resident Stanley Kober accomplished a myriad of things as Commander of the Washington Elm Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 192 of Ridgewood/Ho-Ho-Kus, but it’s restoring the core goal of the nonprofit organization in this community that he remains most proud of after stepping down in July.
“We’ve been able to support our veterans the way they’re supposed to be supported,” he said. “That includes the active duty personnel.”
Kober, a Vietnam veteran, came to the post in 1985 and was assigned commander in 2005, at a time when the future of the chapter was uncertain, with interest, membership and productivity waning. Most members at the time were aging World War II veterans and unable to maintain the post as they had in the past, Kober explained.
In fact, by 2005, the State VFW sent a letter to the Washington Elm post asking why they should retain their chapter. The post was given 30 days to raise membership and bring the post back to life. Kober took on the challenge.
Since then, membership has risen from 39 to 110 and the post has come to be a vital part of the community.
Christie signs law targeting texting while driving
TRENTON, N.J. (AP) – Gov. Chris Christie has signed legislation that orders the installation of signs throughout New Jersey to remind drivers not to text and drive.
The measure, known as “Nikki’s Law, is named after Nikki Kellenyi, an 18-year-old Washington Township resident who was killed in an April 2012 vehicle crash.
Steve Lonegan battling against all odds in N.J. Senate race
Wednesday August 14, 2013, 11:49 PM
By HERB JACKSON
“NJ/DC” COLUMNIST
How confident are Democrats in Washington that Cory Booker will win the Senate seat formerly held by Frank Lautenberg in October?
When asked last month about the absence of black Democrats in the Senate, Majority Leader Harry Reid told a reporter, “Cory Booker’s on the way.”
Political handicappers have already labeled the seat as “solid Democrat,” a notch above the rating given to Sen. Bob Menendez’s seat at this point in his reelection bid last year.
And while some Democratic senators began asking their contributors this week to help Booker, the Newark mayor told the editorial board of The Asbury Park Press that he already has been asked to travel to other states next year to raise money for the party’s candidates.
The Republican nominee, Steve Lonegan, a former mayor of Bogota, is unfazed by these odds. In a victory speech on Tuesday night in which he mentioned Booker 12 times, Lonegan cast himself as a member of Gen. George Washington’s army, and Booker as part of the forces of King George III.
“Mr. Booker — sort of like the British troops that were held up in Trenton on Christmas Day 1776 — they had superior funding, superior everything — they had the whole British crown behind them. But they lost to a ragtag group of rebels, the American Colonies,” Lonegan told the crowd, which included someone holding a “Don’t Tread on Me” flag and someone wearing a tricorn hat.
