Englewood NJ, a bear was sighted in Englewood at 6:29  on June 1st.

Encountering a black bear can be a thrilling experience, but it’s essential to prioritize safety for both yourself and the bear. Here are some safety tips to keep in mind when dealing with black bears in North Jersey:

  1. Stay calm and avoid sudden movements: If you spot a black bear, remain calm and do not run. Sudden movements may startle the bear or trigger its instinct to chase. Stand your ground and try to appear non-threatening.
  2. Give the bear space: Maintain a respectful distance from the bear. If you’re too close, slowly back away while keeping your eyes on the bear. Give it a clear path to escape if it feels cornered.
  3. Do not feed the bears: Feeding bears intentionally or unintentionally (leaving food or garbage accessible) can habituate them to human presence and make them more likely to approach humans in search of food. Keep all food, garbage, and scented items securely stored.
  4. Make noise: If you find yourself in close proximity to a bear, make yourself known by speaking calmly and loudly. Clap your hands or use noise-making devices to help the bear identify your presence and hopefully move away.
  5. Avoid direct eye contact: Direct eye contact can be perceived as a threat or a challenge. While keeping an eye on the bear, try to avoid prolonged eye contact that may escalate the situation.
  6. Back away slowly: If the bear starts to approach you, slowly back away while facing the bear. Do not turn your back on the bear or run, as this may trigger its instinct to chase.
  7. Stay in groups: When hiking or exploring bear country, it’s safer to travel in a group rather than alone. Bears are less likely to approach larger groups of people.
  8. Carry bear deterrents: Consider carrying bear deterrents like bear spray, a non-lethal spray that can deter an aggressive bear. Learn how to use it properly and have it readily accessible.
  9. Be cautious around cubs: If you encounter bear cubs, be aware that the mother bear is likely nearby. Avoid getting between the cubs and their mother, as this can be extremely dangerous.

Remember, these safety tips are general guidelines. It’s always best to consult local authorities or wildlife experts for specific advice tailored to your location and situation.
