Ridgewood NJ, Ben & Jerry’s said Monday it was going to stop selling its ice cream in the Israeli-occupied West Bank and contested east Jerusalem, saying the sales in the territories sought by the Palestinians are “inconsistent with our values.”
The anti-Semitic stance has raised the ire of many . GOP Gubnatorial hopeful Jack Ciattarelli said in a post on Facebook ,” In response to Ben & Jerry’s decision to stop selling their products in parts of Israel, the Ciattarelli household will no longer be buying their ice cream or products.”
Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennet vowed Tuesday to “act aggressively” against the decision by Ben & Jerry’s to stop selling its ice cream in Israeli-occupied territories, as the country’s ambassador to the U.S. urged dozens of state governors to punish the company under anti-boycott laws.
Israel’s Interior Minister Ayelet Shaked said , “Ben & Jerry’s International chose to suck up to terrorist and antisemitic organizations instead of being faithful to its Israeli licensee,” she said at the factory located in Be’er Tuvia, a southern community near the city of Kiryat Malakhi.
Several kosher grocery stores in Bergen County have decided to pull Ben & Jerry’s from their shelves after the company’s announcement this week that it would stop doing business with a licensee in Israel that sells ice cream in the Israeli-occupied Palestinian territories.
Dani Secemski, the owner of Glatt Express, a kosher supermarket in Teaneck, New Jersey, said the company made the decision to drop Ben & Jerry’s almost immediately upon seeing its announcement.
“I thought this was an anti-Semitic statement about the evil situation in the Middle East,” Secemski told CNN. He says that before this, Glatt Express sold about $8,000 worth of Ben & Jerry’s ice cream per year. “If they can reverse their decision, then we’ll 100% carry them on our shelves again, and I’ll be the first person to tell other businesses to do the same thing.”
Reminder that “Ben” and “Jerry” are both Jewish.
And “territories sought by the Palestinians” is a real funny way of saying “the place where they currently live.”
