Hackensack, N.J. — Bergen County official leadership and community members gathered on Wednesday night to commemorate Korean Liberation Day, honoring the rich history, traditions, and vibrant contributions of the local Korean American community.

Understanding the Significance of Gwangbokjeol (광복절)

Korean Liberation Day, known natively as Gwangbokjeol (광복절), is observed annually on August 15.

This historical holiday commemorates Korea’s liberation in 1945 from 35 years of Japanese colonial rule, following the surrender of Japan to the Allied Powers at the end of World War II. The day stands as a national symbol of freedom, resilience, and cultural pride.

While Korean culture has recently gained widespread global popularity—often driven by global interest in K-food, K-pop, television, fashion, and beauty—Bergen County has long enjoyed a deep and direct connection with Korean traditions.
