HO-HO-KUS, N.J. — Looking back into the archives, the Ho-Ho-Kus Volunteer Fire Department (HHKFD) recently shared a memorable local throwback to July 11, 1988—a night defined by pop culture hits and a major local emergency response.

A Blast from the Past: July 11, 1988

To set the scene in mid-1988: Cheap Trick’s power ballad “The Flame” held the #1 spot on the Billboard charts, and Eddie Murphy’s iconic comedy “Coming to America” was dominating the summer box office and Boyd Loving , then as now the incident, was captured by photographer Tony (Boyd) Loving.

At 10:01 PM, however, local attention turned to Ardmore Road as the Ho-Ho-Kus Volunteers were dispatched to a reported residential structure fire.

38 Volunteer Firefighters Respond On Scene

Answering the call, 31 adult volunteer members along with 7 Junior Auxiliary members arrived at the Ardmore Road home to combat the blaze.

Crew members operated on scene for over three hours to fully extinguish the fire and overhaul the structure. Fortunately, no injuries were reported among residents or emergency responders, though the home sustained significant damage.
