Paramus NJ, Gov. Phil Murphy announced at his daily COVID-19 briefing on Tuesday afternoon that Bergen County will be the site for a new rapid test from Abbott Laboratories. Last week, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) granted emergency use to Abbott Laboratories for the point-of-care COVID-19 test. The Illinois-based company said the test can give positive results in as little as five minutes, and negative results in about 13 minutes.

What makes this test so different is where it can be used: outside the four walls of a traditional hospital such as in the physicians’ office or urgent care clinics.

The company said that because of its small size, it can be used in more non-traditional places where people can have results delivered in a matter of minutes, bringing an alternate testing technology to combat the pandemic.

Abbott is ramping up production to deliver 50,000 ID NOW COVID-19 tests per day, beginning next week, to the U.S. health care system.
