Newark NJ, Following days of volatile demonstrations outside Newark’s premier immigration facility, New Jersey Congressman Jeff Van Drew conducted an unannounced, firsthand tour of the Delaney Hall Detention Facility.

His findings directly challenge the ongoing political narrative surrounding the center, sparking a fresh debate over detainee conditions and immigration enforcement in the Garden State.

“Better Than Some Nursing Homes”: Van Drew Exposes Real Conditions

Walking through the facility to inspect operations, medical setups, and daily conditions for himself, Congressman Van Drew stated that the reality on the ground drastically contradicts the talking points circulating in Washington.

According to Van Drew, Delaney Hall operates with highly comprehensive accommodation, utility, and care structures, including:

  • Full-Scale Medical Care: On-site access to doctors, nurses, and dental professionals.

  • Educational Resources: A dedicated law library for detainees to study their legal cases, alongside a standard recreational library.

  • Recreation & Wellness: Large open spaces for physical activity, featuring a fully equipped gymnasium and an outdoor soccer field.

  • Customized Dietary Services: A structured food service department accommodating strict religious diets (including kosher options), severe food allergies, and medical dietary restrictions.

“I saw good conditions, clean facilities, basic care, and a detention center where ICE and DHS are doing a hard job that keeps our communities safe,” Van Drew remarked. “Quite frankly, the conditions I saw today are better than what you see in some nursing homes.”

A Hard Line on Criminal Detainees and Violent Riots

Shifting focus to the individuals currently housed within the facility’s perimeter, the Congressman urged the public and lawmakers to look closely at the data rather than the rhetoric.

Van Drew emphasized that the facility predominantly holds undocumented individuals with extensive, documented criminal backgrounds. The detainee population includes individuals with histories of:

  • Drug trafficking and high-volume cocaine distribution

  • Violent assault and weapons charges

  • Grand fraud and sophisticated money laundering operations

“They are exactly the kind of people ICE should be taking off our streets,” Van Drew stated bluntly.

Addressing the recent string of violent protests that have resulted in federal law enforcement injuries outside the building, Van Drew drew a firm line between constitutional rights and criminal unrest. While validating peaceful assembly as an American right, he condemned the escalation to violence, citing incidents of rioters throwing objects at perimeter personnel, blocking transit routes, and actively assaulting federal agents.

The Congressman concluded by calling for absolute, continued cooperation between local New Jersey police departments, ICE, and the Department of Homeland Security to maintain regional stability.

  1. So free housing, good food, access to recreation and legal resources while mostly waiting to be released back onto the streets, all paid for by you, while you fret over how often you can water your lawn.
