Understanding Today’s Cannabis: A Primer for the Newbies

For those new to the world of cannabis (or returning after a hiatus), it can be slightly overwhelming. Here’s a brief guide to the 6 main product categories to help you navigate your choices:

  1. Flower. This is what most people think of when they think of marijuana: the dried and cured female cannabis plant’s buds. They’re usually green and can be consumed in various ways, from smoking to vaporizing (heating without burning). The flower is the most traditional form of cannabis and has varying levels of THC and CBD, the main active compounds.  Flower is typically consumed in rolled cigarettes or ‘joints’, pipes, and water pipes called bongs.
  2. Pre-rolls. Think of these as ready-to-use cannabis cigarettes or joints. They contain ground-up flower and are wrapped in paper which you smoke like a cigarette, making them convenient for those who don’t want to roll their own from flower.
  3. Edibles: Cannabis-infused items you eat or swallow, providing a smokeless way to consume cannabis. Currently in NJ, this includes gummies, lozenges, pills and beverage infusions. Do note that they can take longer to kick in (sometimes up to 2 hours) but often offer a more prolonged effect.  Soon, infused food products like chocolates and baked goods will be coming to the NJ market as well.
  4. Vaporizers. These devices heat up cannabis oils to release its active compounds without burning it, resulting in a vapor that’s inhaled. Vaporizers are typically cartridges containing oil and a heating element you attach to a separate battery for power, but also come in all-in-one disposables.  They are perceived as a healthier alternative to smoking, as well as more convenient, portable and discrete than smoking flower.
  5. Concentrates: As the name suggests, these are highly concentrated forms of cannabis best saved for expert users or medical patients requiring a high dosage. They come in various textures and are much more potent than flower. Examples include hash, kief, shatter, wax, and rosin.  These are most often smoked, but in some forms, are eaten with food.
  6. Topicals: These are cannabis-infused lotions, balms, and oils applied directly to the skin for localized relief. They are great for addressing pain or inflammation and typically don’t produce a “high”.

  1. Empowered customers will improve the world.

    How could they not?

  2. I gotta take a ride over there and check it out, now that it’s all legal nobody can’t break anyone’s balls. You know the cops are crying.

  3. Why promote this and advertise it? Pot is Pot, however you cut it, slice it, dice it. Country is going to pot by the States legalizing recreational use, impaired under the influence. A multi million business.
