Drivers in New Jersey may soon be able to purchase license plates featuring a throwback design from the 1980s thanks to legislation sponsored by Senator Kristin Corrado and approved today by the Senate Transportation Committee.
“The idea to revive New Jersey’s blue license plate was recommended to me by a constituent. It turns out that many New Jerseyans, especially classic car enthusiasts, favor the vintage license plate design that gained popularity in the ‘80s,” said Corrado (R-40). “In fact, if a New Jersey driver were to order a custom license plate today, they would still receive a plate with the standard yellow background. My legislation will actually give drivers the opportunity to purchase something that is truly different and unique.”
The legislation, S-3181, authorizes the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC) to issue classic New Jersey license plates to replicate the ones issued between 1979 and 1991. In addition to fees typically associated for the registration of a motor vehicle, there is an application fee of $50 and an annual renewal fee of $10 for the classic license plates.
“New Jersey would not be the first state to bring back retro license plates,” added Corrado. “Many states have already done this and they have found there to be great demand for them.”
I remember these NJ plates!
Will look great on my 1987 Volvo 740 Turbo sedan (yep it still runs fine). I will definitely be purchasing when they become available.
Top priority?
Bring back Brendan Byrne while we’re at it !
That plate was extremely ugly, we don’t need to look like California’s license plate. Keep what we have now leave it alone.
Yeah!! This will fix Jerseys problems. Don’t go after Murphy, get new license plates.
“Don’t go after Murphy, get new license plates.”
That may be the only thing left that you can be allowed to do.
Glad they are finally getting to the important stuff in Trenton !
Typical New Jersey waste of time and money. We’re by filling in pot holes
How about dropping the front plate and only issuing one. Save 1/2 the cost of producing them.
We have the least flattering plates in the U.S. The “New Jersey” is of a different font than the “Garden State.” They should both be upper case. Plus, if we’re going back to the blue-plate style with embossed letters and numbers, change the colors! Green with white letters to support “Garden State,” or a darker blue with white letters to pay tribute to our great Jersey Shore! I will purchase any new issue to get rid of the current eyesores which are peeling everywhere!
These blue plates were more flattering, the yellow are hideous. Not much to like in NJ, but bringing back the blue is a step in the right direction.
No too blue plates.
In the interest of accuracy, it should be changed from ‘the garden state’ to the ‘garbage state’.
Look at all the trash on the highways along with dead deer carcasses while dodging potholes.
Thanks to our grossly overpaid DO-NOTHING State DOT employees.
I always thought that tiny map of NJ looked like a kidney.
