East Rutherford NJ, the American Dream mall in New Jersey, the second-largest mall in the country, experienced an evacuation shortly after opening on Black Friday due to a bomb threat that was later determined to be unfounded, according to police.
At approximately 7:13 a.m. ET on Friday, just after the mall opened its doors at 7 a.m., an individual reported a bomb inside the facility to the police. In response, officers evacuated the East Rutherford shopping center to conduct a thorough search. The New Jersey State Police spokesperson informed the media that the agency’s bomb and K-9 units thoroughly examined the mall for explosive devices but found none. The mall was reopened around 9:15 a.m. for shoppers and retail workers.
“The mall has been deemed safe, and American Dream will be returning to normal operations. This is still an active investigation, and there is no additional information available,” the spokesperson stated.
American Dream, in a statement mentioned that the evacuation was a precautionary measure in response to a later-deemed non-credible threat. The safety of employees and guests remains their top priority, and the mall has already resumed operations, expressing anticipation for a joyous and safe holiday season.
Before the mall reopened, New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy addressed the evacuation on X (formerly known as Twitter), advising shoppers to follow law enforcement instructions and exit safely.
“We will remain vigilant to ensure everyone stays safe this holiday season,” he reassured after the mall’s reopening.
The evacuation occurred on one of the busiest shopping days of the year, as Americans sought the best holiday deals. This day presents particular challenges for retailers due to the large crowds it attracts. In previous years, incidents like fights among customers and stampedes resulting in injuries have been reported.
Adding to the concerns is the nationwide increase in mass shooting events, some of which have occurred in grocery stores and other retail establishments, such as Walmart.
