Ridgewood NJ, in a significant ruling, a five-member panel of Brazil’s Supreme Court unanimously voted to uphold a nationwide ban on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter). The decision came after Justice Alexandre de Moraes ordered the ban on Friday due to the platform’s failure to appoint a local legal representative, as required by Brazilian law. This ruling extends the ban, which will remain in place until X complies with the legal requirement and pays over $3 million in outstanding fines.
Brazil, with approximately 21 million X users, represents the platform’s sixth-largest market globally. In comparison, the U.S. boasts 108 million users. The platform was taken offline over the weekend following Justice de Moraes’ ruling, and the Supreme Court’s panel has now upheld that decision, emphasizing the importance of compliance with local regulations.
Additionally, four of the five justices also supported imposing a daily fine of $8,900 on individuals who use virtual private networks (VPNs) to bypass the ban. Since the ban was implemented, rival platform Bluesky, a decentralized social media network, has reported a surge in users, with at least 500,000 Brazilians joining in the aftermath.
Tim Kravchunovsky, founder and CEO of the decentralized telecommunications network Chirp, commented on the growing trend toward decentralized platforms:
“With Telegram and now X under fire, it’s no surprise that decentralized platforms like Bluesky are gaining popularity. Bluesky reportedly gained 1 million new users in just three days after X was banned in Brazil. With increasing restrictions on free speech worldwide, decentralized messaging is becoming the solution for those seeking greater privacy and freedom from government intervention.”
He added that platforms like Telegram, Facebook, and X have long operated under centralized control, often subject to government influence. Kravchunovsky highlighted the growing appeal of decentralized alternatives like Session, Dust, and Element, with the latter recently being selected by the United Nations for its secure communications.
As concerns over privacy and security rise globally, the push for decentralized platforms reflects a broader shift towards safeguarding individual freedoms in an era of increasing regulation.
