>DeMint vows to reverse FCC’s ‘Internet takeover’

Sen. Jim DeMint, R-SC, says Federal Communications Commission should be renamed the “Fabricating a Crisis Commission,” following a vote by the panel’s three Democrats to approve proposed rules that amount to a hostile takeover of the Internet by a government agency acting illegally.

The proposal – misleadingly described by proponents as an attempt to insure “net neutrality” by guaranteeing equal access to the Internet – was introduced a year ago by Julius Genachowski, President Obama’s appointee as FCC chairman.

A federal court has ruled that the commission has no authority to regulate the Internet, and a bipartisan group of senators and representives warned Genechowski not to attempt to impose a regulatory regime on the Internet earlier this year.

The move’s legality was even questioned by FCC Commissioner Michael Copp, one of the Democrats who voted today with Genachowski, saying he considered voting against the proposal because it lacks a sufficiently defensible legal basis to survive a court challenge promised by major Internet Service Providers like Verizon, Microsoft, and AT & T.

But legal challenges by industry are likely to be much less of a problem for the Genachowski-led takeover than efforts in Congress to stop the FCC in its tracks.

New Jersey lawmakers in recent days have approved tax breaks for the film industry, investors in technology start-ups, senior citizens, and historic-preservation projects. They’ve voted to change how corporate taxes are calculated and to start a job-training program for the unemployed. (Rao, The Philadelphia Inquirer)

THE RIDGEWOOD NEWS

The Ridgewood Chamber of Commerce has come forward with a parking proposal that is both simple and sensible.

Specifically, the proposal suggests maintaining the current rate and time limits for all street meters (50 cents per hour for up to two hours), while changing all the village parking lots to a reduced rate with expanded time limits (25 cents per hour for up to 12 hours).

New Low in Support for Health Care Reform
December 13, 2010 1:17 PM

Coinciding with a federal judge’s ruling invalidating a key element of the health care reform law, an ABC News/Washington Post poll finds support for the landmark legislation at a new low – but division on what to do about it.

The law’s never been popular, with support peaking at just 48 percent in November 2009. Today it’s slipped to 43 percent, numerically its lowest in ABC/Post polling. (It was about the same, 44 percent, a year ago.) Fifty-two percent are opposed, and that 9-point gap in favor of opposition is its largest on record since the latest debate over health care reform began in earnest in summer 2009.

More also continue to “strongly” oppose the law than to strongly support it, 37 percent to 22 percent.

3 Days Drunk : Local Indy musician gives back.

The singer\bassist for the group 3 Days Drunk is donating a portion of his profits from any 3 Days Drunk song sold between Dec 8 and Christmas from iTunes to Toys for Tots.

We have been in a recession for a couple of years now and folks are struggling to make ends meet. I have seen how tough some folks have it and I just thought what could I do to give a little back. I feel lucky that I still have a job which allows me the ability to pursue my music so I figured that I could give a little back through my music. Music sales are in the decline and the whole industry has been changing over the past few years. However, these changes have allowed independent artists, like myself, to be able to record and put out their music for a low cost. It really doesn’t cost me anything to record an original song since I have my own studio. Recording and releasing a cover song costs me a little more due to licensing. I also have teamed up with a group that gets an artist’s songs up on iTunes and pays a high return to the artist. This allows me to collect a higher payout per song as an independent than most major artists.

Its due to this higher payout that I came up with the idea that I could give something back to charity this year. I chose Toys For Tots because of the work they do and, being a veteran, I have a lot of respect for these guys. Every child deserves to get a present on Christmas and these great folks try every year to make that happen. Being a small independent artist if feel that I am lucky in the fact that I can afford to do what I do. So this is my little way to give back. It would be great to have everyone buy one of our songs as the more that is sold the bigger the donation I will make.

Greg is the singer\bassist for the group 3 Days Drunk. He is also an independent recording engineer\remixer who has done work for major label and independent artists.

3 Days Drunk is a collaboration between 2 friends who use to play together while living in Japan during the 1990’s. As life got in the way and connections were lost, the creative juices would be renewed when Greg asked Bow to help collaborate on a remix, which turned into a cover tune and the first release from 3 Days Drunk. The creative spark has been re-lit and with the use of today’s technology they have started working on new songs together with plans to release each new single as they are recorded independently.

3 Days Drunk can be found online at https://reverbnation.com/3daysdrunk https://myspace.com/3daysdrunk https://youtube.com/3daysdrunk and can be downloaded from iTunes at https://itunes.apple.com/us/artist/3-days-drunk/id380466389

>Expressing Elvis – Jan 8 Celebrating Elvis Presley’s Birthday in Poetry and Song

Ridgewood, NJ – January 8, 2011-“Elvis Presley is Alive and Well on Lincoln Avenue in Fair Lawn, New Jersey….” So reads the title of a poem by Maria Mazziotti Gillan.

On that same road but a little farther north — in Ridgewood — Elvis will be coming back. He will be alive and well — in poetry and song.

Since you may have wondered what to do after the New Year’s hoopla has quieted down, and after all the bowl games have been played, why not come out to get your own Elvis on?

Poets, we are sure that everyone has an Elvis poem or two. In honor of Elvis Presley’s birthday, why not join poets Maria Mazziotti Gillan, Laura Boss, James Gwyn, and others as they share their poems that include Elvis.

The event is on January 8, 2011, from 1-4 pm at Ridgewood Christian Reformed Church, 271 Lincoln Avenue, Ridgewood, NJ. Plenty of free parking. A large space to accommodate all manner of bards and balladeers. Express Elvis in verse or in any variety of expression. Come on out to listen or to participate. Tune up your guitar. Dust off your jumpsuit. It will be a memorable afternoon. It’s free. All are welcome.

Note to Poets: If you’d like to participate, please submit your intent to James Gwyn at ERGO.therefore@gmail.com by Dec. 31st so he can get a reading list together. (In other words, RSVP.)

>Water rate increase on Ridgewood council’s agenda

>Water rate increase on Ridgewood council’s agenda
Wednesday, December 8, 2010
BY RICHARD DE SANTA
GLEN ROCK GAZETTE

https://www.northjersey.com/news/111531329_Water_rate_increase_on_Ridgewood_council_s_agenda_.html
An ordinance to increase water rates by 5 percent next year is on the agenda for the Ridgewood council’s public meeting on Wednesday night.

Officials from Glen Rock, Midland Park and Wyckoff, which the water utility serves, are expected to attend the meeting.

Fighting the increase

The Glen Rock Borough Council recently formalized its participation in a lawsuit against Ridgewood Water over current and proposed water rate increases.

The council authorized $7,500 to cover potential legal fees at its Dec. 2 public meeting. The action was part of a resolution stating that the increases are detrimental to Glen Rock; information recently communicated by legal counsel supports the plaintiffs; and that the borough wishes to join in the associated litigation.

The suit was filed last summer by the Wyckoff council on behalf of that township, in addition to Glen Rock and Midland Park. It came in the wake of the 21 percent water rate increase incurred by the three towns this year, and the announcement of an additional 5 percent hike proposed for 2011. Hackensack attorney and former Wyckoff mayor Joseph Fiorenzo filed the suit on a pro-bono basis for Wyckoff
