Yellow-shirt volunteers go the extra mile at Go the Distance for Autism

Ridgewood NJ, During the sixth annual “Go the Distance for Autism,” volunteers from the World Mission Society Church of God in Ridgewood provided a torch of encouragement for the cyclists riding for autism awareness and education. Lending a helping hand at the largest charity cycling event in New Jersey, about 100 of the volunteers worked in their well-known yellow shirts from early in the morning to the end of the event, held yesterday at Bergen Community College.

“We’re here to cheer, we’re here to win, so push that bike on till the end!” Volunteers stationed at each of the checkpoints shouted with one voice, while also providing cyclists with water, fruit and energy bars.

Even themed costumes were in the order of business for some of the volunteers. One volunteer in particular sported a renaissance outfit and a plastic light saber, yelling, “We are proud of you, we are proud of you!” Cyclists couldn’t help but smile as they passed him by.

“It takes a huge effort to put on this event,” said Chantelle Walker, director of development for Alpine Learning Group, an educational and behavioral center for individuals with autism and beneficiary of the event. “We have never had a volunteer effort like this church group. We’re stunned. We really are completely stunned about how wonderful they are.”

Walker continued to rave on about the great difference the Church of God volunteers made. “I think your crew has definitely changed the tone of things,” she said. “I’ve had comments from people here today, that they feel a different feeling than in years past. They felt a welcome from the minute they came through the entrance.”

The event raised more than $800,000 for the four participating autism programs: Alpine Learning Group, EPIC, Garden Academy, and REED Academy. All four are located in New Jersey, where autism affects 1 in every 45 children, and particularly 1 in every 24 boys.

After being shocked by the unity and selfless of the volunteers of the Church of God during past charity events in Washington, D.C. and Virginia, Eventage, an event planning company, was eager to work with them again and invited the Church to join this event.

“They’re pretty much heaven-sent, actually, because we couldn’t have done any of this stuff without you guys,” said Joey Farmer, director at Eventage. “When the team showed up this morning – a hundred people in the yellow shirts – we were just like, ‘thank goodness.’”

Kushner resigns as president of Alpine club; couple called coach anti-Semitic, report says

David Kushner has resigned as president of the Alpine Country Club, officials of the club in Demarest said Tuesday, days after Kushner and his wife, Nanci, pleaded not guilty to charges that they stalked and harassed the Cresskill High School basketball coach.

Investigators tied the Kushners, both 49, to anonymous emails sent to the coach by tracing the IP addresses of the emails, according to records obtained on Tuesday. The emails had come from the Kushners’ home in Cresskill and from the Manhattan offices of David Kushner’s company, Paradigm Capital Funding Group, the records said.

The Kushners also were charged with harassment last week in Tenafly, where police say they sent anonymous emails to a former friend.

Police are also investigating a house party Friday night at the Kushners’ home. A juvenile boy was taken to the hospital for evaluation after suspected alcohol consumption, and authorities seized alcohol, suspected marijuana and drug paraphernalia, officials said. David Kushner told police he was out of state at the time, records show.

The quick succession of events brought an abrupt shift for a family well-known over the years in Bergen County society and at high profile charity functions.

Alpine Country Club President David Kushner and his wife, Nanci, allegedly sent anonymous, harassing emails to Tenafly resident Cory Hechler, according to court papers that were made public Monday.

Hechler, a longtime friend and golfing partner of David Kushner, filed a civil lawsuit last year alleging that Kushner persuaded him to invest in business deals that lost a substantial amount of money.

The Kushners have been charged with harassment in the Tenafly case, which was announced on Friday without the name of the alleged victim.

The Kushners also face charges, made public last week, that they stalked and harassed the Cresskill High School basketball coach by sending anonymous emails in an attempt to get him fired. The Kushners’ son played basketball at Cresskill High School.

Authorities also said Monday that they are investigating an incident Friday night at the Kushners’ home on Adams Drive in Cresskill.

Officers responding to a noise complaint reported that someone at the home was taken to a hospital, and that a quantity of alcohol was seized. Cresskill Deputy Police Chief James Domville said he did not know whether the couple was home at the time.

No charges have been filed in the matter, but the detective bureau is investigating to determine whether underage drinking took place at the home, Domville said. He said he did not know the age of the person taken to the hospital.

Cresskill couple charged with stalking

A Cresskill man who is a founder of a New York-based investment firm and the president of the Alpine Country Club and his wife have been charged with stalking for allegedly sending anonymous emails in an attempt to force a Cresskill High School basketball coach from his job, according to court papers.

David and Nanci Kushner, both 49, allegedly sent harassing emails to the varsity basketball coach, Michael Doto, and his employers over the course of two years, Cresskill police said in a criminal complaint.

And on Friday, the Tenafly police issued a news release saying that the Kushners had been charged with harassment related to “anonymous email correspondence” sent late last year.

In an interview on Friday, Doto said he had been forwarded emails sent to Cresskill school administrators and had received another email sent to his home account in March. He said that four letters “similar to the emails” were sent to his Cresskill house in March.

“It has been a scary experience for my family and I,” Doto said, declining to comment further.

Passengers with moments to live screamed in terror and the pilot frantically pounded on the locked cockpit door as a 27-year-old German co-pilot deliberately and wordlessly smashed an Airbus carrying 150 people into an Alpine mountainside.

The account Thursday of the final moments of Germanwings Flight 9525 prompted some airlines to immediately impose stricter cockpit rules — and raised haunting questions about the motive of the co-pilot, whose breathing never wavered as he destroyed the plane and the lives of those aboard.

“We have no idea of the reason,” Marseille Prosecutor Brice Robin said, revealing the chilling conclusions investigators reached after reconstructing the final minutes of the flight from the plane’s black box voice recorder. Co-pilot Andreas Lubitz’s intention was “to destroy this plane.”

French, German and U.S. officials said there was no indication of terrorism. The prosecutor did not elaborate on why investigators do not suspect a political motive; instead they’re focusing on the co-pilot’s “personal, family and professional environment” to try to determine why he did it.

Saddle River is on the hunt for its third superintendent in three years.

Alpine wants permission to keep its interim leader beyond the two-year state limit.

And Ho-Ho-Kus is hoping its high-achieving, parent-involved district appears attractive to superintendent candidates — even though it can offer them only $135,000.

Leaders in some small, wealthy North Jersey school districts say the superintendent pay cap — instituted by Governor Christie in 2011 — has dealt them a particularly hard blow. Once seen as appealing places to work, these districts now are having trouble drawing and retaining top candidates because they’re competing with larger districts that are allowed to pay more and New York State, which has no salary limits. What’s more, they are willing to pay top dollar, but can’t.

On top of it, many of these chief executives often work double duty as principals, so offering them less than what they could earn in subordinate roles elsewhere isn’t always an easy sell.

Christie targeted superintendent salaries five years ago with his Reform Agenda to help school districts keep costs low and better finance priority services.

Superintendent salaries had risen, on average, 46 percent or $100 million between 2001 and 2010, according to the governor’s office.

The cap resulted in the reduction of salaries for about 360 school superintendents, or 70 percent, for a potential savings of nearly $9.8 million statewide, $2.2 million in Bergen County and $650,000 in Passaic County, according to the state data.

When the cap was imposed, Christie’s move was panned by educators and praised by fiscal conservatives, who complained about the state’s high property taxes — and even higher per-pupil costs for suburban districts.

Today, the New Jersey Senate Budget Committee will vote on a bill sponsored by Sens. Paul Sarlo, D-Wood-Ridge, and M. Teresa Ruiz, D-Newark, that would roll back the caps, prohibiting the state Department of Education from regulating the maximum salary a school district can pay its superintendent. The bill was already considered by the education committee, Sarlo said.

Bergen County property tax info released for 2014-15.

The state of New Jersey has just released tax rates for every municipality in the state. Before you look at the chart below, can you guess which Bergen County towns have the highest and lowest property taxes?

Ok, now you can look. If you guessed “Paramus” has the lowest, you would be partially right. While it’s eighth on the list, it qualifies as the lowest taxed borough with affordable home prices. Alpine, Saddle River, Englewood Cliffs, Rockleigh, Edgewater and Franklin Lakes all have an average list price above $1 million. (Teterboro essentially has no single family homes.) In Paramus, the average list is in the $600k range.

On the other end of the spectrum with an effective tax rate more than five times higher than Alpine’s isBogota. The general tax rate in Bogota is 3.630 and and its effective tax rate is 3.222.

What’s the difference between the two rates?

The general tax rate doesn’t take into account that your home’s assessed value is not equal to its market value. If your tax rate is high but your assessed value ratio is low, your taxes aren’t as high as you think they are – you’re not being taxed on the full value of your home!

So if you’re comparing tax rates between towns, use the effective tax rate.

The equalization ratio in the chart is simply an average of the area’s assessed value divided by the market value. The general tax rate is multiplied by the equalization ratio to get the effective tax rate. (Also see this video on comparing tax rates.)

Ridgewood NJ, The driver of a 4-door BMW sedan was transported to Bergen Regional Medical Center in Paramus after losing control of her vehicle and crashing it into a utility pole in front of 239 West Glen Avenue, Ridgewood at 11:40 AM on Saturday, 12/13. Ridgewood PD, EMS, FD, and Emergency Services units all responded to the scene. West Glen Avenue remains closed between North Monroe Street and Alpine Terrace due to the downed pole. No loss of electric power was reported in the area.
