Twitter uproar splits Fair Lawn on free speech vs. student safety

THE RECORD

A media frenzy that ignited after a Fair Lawn student was questioned about comments she made online about a “pro-Israel girl” in her school has left in its wake a worried family, a divided community, and a school that has been hammered by negative attention from around the world in an incident that some local residents say was misconstrued.

Bethany Koval

The controversy unfolded after high school junior Bethany Koval wrote, in detail, online, about being questioned by administrators over a tweet cheering that a pro-Israel student had “unfollowed” her on Twitter and her sharing the student’s name in a private message to a friend. She believed she was targeted by school administrators, she said, because of her anti-Israel political opinions on Twitter.

On Friday, Koval, 16, continued to draw wide support online as people viewed the incident as an attempt to stifle free speech and criticism of Israel. Locally, some residents defended the school, saying officials were only doing their duty to investigate a bullying allegation that a student had lodged against Koval.

Review: Bank on the Seafood at Fish Urban Dining in Ridgewood

FISH

By SHIVANI VORAJAN. 2, 2016

It would not be an exaggeration to say that the setting of Fish Urban Dining is striking. Situated in a former Bank of America branch on East Ridgewood Avenue, the restaurant has 30-foot-high ceilings with six huge chandeliers, and its sleek dining room extends into what was the bank’s vault, complete with a five-ton steel door.

Jim and Karen DeGilio, the married couple who own the restaurant and a second Fish Urban Dining, in Asbury Park, opened their Ridgewood place in July. It has been packed ever since. It has high-quality seafood, attentive service and some excellent nonaquatic dishes, too.

“We pride ourselves on serving fresh, uncomplicated seafood with fair prices in a comfortable, fun setting,” Mr. DeGilio said in a phone interview following my visits.

Dave Symniuk, the executive chef at both locations, has worked with the couple for over a decade and oversees a team of cooks that handles day-to-day preparations.

The Democratic Debate: Prepare for a Fairy Tale World Where Everything Is Free

The Democratic Debate: Prepare for an Orgy of Unicorn Farts and Pixie Dust

By: Leon H. Wolf (Diary)  |  October 13th, 2015 at 04:00 AM

Tonight, the Democrats will have their first Presidential primary debate, although “debate” is something of a misnomer. “Debate” implies that there will be a substantive disagreement in which candidates have different ideas about the direction of the country. However, if you listen to the Democrats talk and check the “issues” section of their campaign websites, you will find that the only real disagreement they have is about exactly how much “free” stuff that the government should give away.

For instance, all the Democrats in the field* believe in “free” college. There is some disagreement amongst the Democrats as to whether only the first two years of college should be free, or whether all four years should be free, or whether college should be free as long as anyone wants to stay in college. They are, however, all in basic agreement that college learning should be considerably more free than it currently is.

They are likewise in agreement that the government should be in the business of forcing your employer to pay you more, which of course is a policy (according to them) that results in you getting more money for “free.” They are likewise uninamous that the illegal immigrants who are currently in this country should be given legal status for “free.” Birth control, including abortion? Likewise, the Democrats are here to argue mostly about who believes it should be “free” with the greatest amount of conviction.

To no one’s surprise, Brian Beutler has already won the award for the most hack-tastic take on the upcoming Democrat debate. Beutler argues, with no apparent sense of irony, that the party whose central organizing tenet is that “there’s always such a thing as a free lunch” is the party of “adults,” as compared to the Republicans. The sole piece of data he mounts in support of this manifestly insane theory is that the Democrat debate is likely to be boring:

Relative to the two Republican presidential primary debates already behind us, Tuesday night’s Democratic primary debate is expected to draw a modest TV audience. Back on January 31, 2008, when candidate Barack Obama was still a political phenom, CNN logged the most-watched presidential primary debate in its history to date, drawing an average of 8.3 million viewers. With the second Republican primary debate last month, the network nearly tripled that.

We surely have Donald Trump to thank for the disparity. Had he sat out the race this year, he would have deprived Fox News and CNN of his singular combination of fame, media savvy, insensitivity, and cringe-inducing combativeness. But even absent Trump, Republican primary debates would probably draw bigger audiences than their Democratic counterparts. It isn’t wrong or biased to say that Democrats make comparatively boring television. But that isn’t a strike against Democrats, either. It’s a reflection of the fact that the Republican Party, unlike the Democratic Party, is dominated by reactionary voters, which makes its candidates prone to saying or doing outrageous things out of a sense of necessity.

Unfair coverage of Garrett

scott-garrett

Regarding “Garrett criticized after refusing to donate” (Page A-1, July 17) and “Waldwick still waiting on honor for slain Marine” (Page L-3, July 17):

The Record featured a one-two punch attack on Rep. Scott Garrett, R-Wantage, unworthy of an objective newspaper. The first punch, displayed above the fold on the front page, declares that Garrett has “stayed out of sight” (implication: cravenly) to avoid the “uproar” generated by a handful of politicos and advocates supposedly unhappy about his not donating to a GOP campaign group.

This hit piece seizes on inside-the-Beltway gossip to provide a soapbox for those who do not share Garrett’s positions and views, such as his being (shockingly?) “a Christian whose children were home-schooled” and labors to discredit him as an outlier within his party. Whatever limited merit such one-sided, meandering commentary might have as an editorial, it hardly warrants treatment as news, let alone on the front page.

The second punch thrown is a non-news item in the local section, which lends its soapbox this time to complaints from Waldwick Mayor Thomas Giordano, who bizarrely asserts that Waldwick is “still waiting” because of Garrett. The mayor says Garrett “really dropped the ball” and “hasn’t done much” to have the town post office renamed to honor a local hero, even though the congressman has three times introduced a bill to rename the post office.

In short, The Record publishes parochial gossip, partisan sniping and personal ruminations masquerading as “news” to portray Garrett as overly conservative and ineffec-tual.

Glen Rock seeks independent review of process in suspension of 2 police officers

THE RECORD

GLEN ROCK — The Borough Council moved Wednesday night to appoint an independent investigator to examine “the general culture within the police department” and the circumstances leading to the recent suspensions of two officers.

A resolution adopted by the council calls for a special “investigation of police department operations” by retired state Superior Court Judge Alexander H. Carver III.

Carver presided over the recent disciplinary hearing for Officer Bryan Scott, one of two officers suspended from the force back in late December.

The suspensions of Scott and Sgt. Christopher McInerney were approved by Chief of Police Fred Stahman following an internal affairs investigation into allegations the officers deleted two pictures from the Police Department’s computer server. In addition, Stahman recommended termination for both officers.

In late March, Scott and McInerney were reinstated by the council.

Ridgewood Looks to Purchase equipment from Fair lawn skate park

Fair Lawn – The borough will be making some money off the skate park equipment that it purchased five years ago but did not use.

Borough Manager Jim Van Kruiningen told the council at the April 21 work session that the borough has an interested buyer in some of the equipment.

A skate park was built in 2010 on a tennis court on 30th Street and Pellack Drive at the Warren Point Annex. It was open for 13 days before being closed, explained Van Kruiningen. It was shut down after residents complained about after-hours use, noise and trash.

Since then the equipment, which Van Kruiningen said was purchased for $45,390, has been kept in the parks department facility. The funding for the skate park was part of a matching grant with the county, but the borough did not get the matching funding since the park was not put in place.

“This has been five years and I think it is time that we at least try to get something back,” he said.

Officials in the Village of Ridgewood reached out to Superintendent of Parks and Recreation James Graff and expressed an interest in purchasing some of the equipment. After reviewing the pieces, they ended up selecting six pieces out of the 13 for use at a skate park near Graydon Pool.

“It is my recommendation that we sell the equipment to Ridgewood,” said Van Kruiningen.

He suggested selling the equipment for $7,500, which is about 35 percent of the original cost. The six pieces Ridgewood wants were valued at $22,000 when the borough purchased them.

Besides getting some money from the equipment, Fair Lawn residents can also take advantage of using the skate park in Ridgewood.

“They will allow our residents to go there,” Van Kruiningen said.

Critics hate ‘The Interview’

Critics hate ‘The Interview’

As we had long speculated  , the Interview is a bad movie with great PR , in now looks like Sony concocted the whole North Korea nonsense to deflect form the second serious Hacker breach in as many years , PJ Blogger

Movie critics say the controversy surrounding “The Interview” is much more interesting than the movie itself

The movie is scoring just a 50 percent positive review from critics on the Rotten Tomatoes website.

It’s fairing even more poorly with top critics, who give it a measly 32 percent positive rating.

The film is doing better with regular fans, however. It gets a 73 percent “liked it” audience score from Rotten Tomatoes.

Critics say the satire about a television host and producer asked by the CIA to assassinate North Korean leader Kim Jung-un doesn’t deliver the goods.

“Characterizing it as satire elevates the creative execution of the film’s very silly faux assassination of North Korea’s leader Kim Jong Un far beyond what it merits,” writes Betsy Sharkey in the Lost Angeles Times.

Snowden Speaks: A Vanity Fair Exclusive

Snowden Speaks: A Vanity Fair Exclusive
10:30 AM, APRIL 8 2014

“Every person remembers some moment in their life where they witnessed some injustice, big or small, and looked away, because the consequences of intervening seemed too intimidating,” former National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden tells Vanity Fair about his motivation for leaking tens of thousands of secret documents. “But there’s a limit to the amount of incivility and inequality and inhumanity that each individual can tolerate. I crossed that line. And I’m no longer alone.”

Snowden’s extensive response is part of a 20,000-word narrative in Vanity Fair’s May issue, by special correspondent Bryan Burrough and contributing editors Suzanna Andrews and Sarah Ellison. The article is the first comprehensive account—bolstered by interviews with dozens of key players—providing an inside look at how a geeky dropout from the Maryland suburbs found himself alone in a Hong Kong hotel room, releasing some of America’s most carefully guarded secrets to the world.

Teachers, Administrators Give Mixed Reviews to New Evaluations after Test Run

Teachers, Administrators Give Mixed Reviews to New Evaluations after Test Run

But survey of educators who took part in tryout of new system shows most not worried about impact on jobs, tenure.

For all the debate going on outside classroom walls, New Jersey schoolteachers who actually have been through the new state-mandated evaluation system have not found it to be as nerve-wracking as everyone thinks.

In a survey conducted by a team of Rutgers researchers, teachers and administrators who took part in the two-year pilot rollout of the evaluation system had mixed reactions to the new rules and the potential consequences for their careers.

On one hand, there was a wide range of opinion regarding whether the system was entirely fair and accurate, with administrators expressing much more faith than teachers — by a more than 2-to-1 margin.

Nevertheless, three-quarters of teachers surveyed by the Rutgers team said they were not worried that the new evaluations – including those newly tied to student performance — would have a negative impact on their tenure protections.

Even among teachers working to attain tenure, a majority said the new metrics would have little impact or might actually help them more than hurt in keeping their jobs. There were some pockets of anxiety over job security, to be sure, but the Rutgers researchers said it was not widespread – at least not yet. (Mooney/NJSpotlight)

Podesta, Left-Wing Mastermind, to Lead NSA Review

JohnPodestaAP

Podesta, Left-Wing Mastermind, to Lead NSA Review
by Joel B. Pollak 17 Jan 2014, 10:40 AM PDT

President Barack Obama announced Friday that John Podesta, his new “counselor” and the political operative responsible for creating the institutional left in Washington, will be the appointed “to lead a comprehensive review of big data and privacy” in the aftermath of revelations about the National Security Agency’s electronic spying programs. When he joined the White House last month, Podesta’s focus was said to be “climate change.”

The president’s speech contained little news. It was a classic Obama set-piece, designed to demonstrate that he understands both sides of a complex argument, while delegating responsibility to third parties and taking steps that reinforce the interests and goals of the hard left. In this instance, Obama left final decisions about where to store NSA data to Congress, while making sure that Podesta is in charge of the consultative process as a whole.

To be fair, there are few clear answers, even in the wake of stunning revelations about the NSA, as to where the line between security and privacy ought to be drawn. Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY), who has led the opposition to the NSA’s surveillance programs, quipped: “I think what I heard was if you like your privacy you can keep it.” Yet aside from a general sense of mistrust in the president, there is little agreement in his party about a solution.

Democrats are no more united. Their primary concern, like Obama’s, is to make the issue go away. Obama has an additional goal: to restore an image of competence. He knows that his speech will not assuage the concerns of privacy advocates, and could lead to confrontation with intelligence agencies. “But I want the American people to know that the work has begun,” he said. Under Podesta, of course–a detail Obama left for the end.

‘Fairy Tale’ Continues as Obama Proposes Extralegal Obamacare Fix

‘Fairy Tale’ Continues as Obama Proposes Extralegal Obamacare Fix
12:12 PM, Nov 14, 2013 • By DANIEL HALPER

Earlier this week, former President Bill Clinton advised President Obama to “honor the commitment” he made and to allow Americans to keep their health care plans, if they like them. That was a central promise Obama made when he sold Obamacare, but one that turned out not to be true when Obamacare began to be implemented last month.

“So I personally believe, even if it takes a change to the law, the president should honor the commitment the federal government made to those people and let them keep what they got,” Clinton in an interview released Tuesday.

Now President Obama is taking Clinton’s advice and trying to honor that commitment. In remarks today at the White House today, Obama said, “I completely get how upsetting this can be” to lose insurance plans that I promised Americans would be able to keep. “To those Americans, I hear you loud and clear.”
