Catalytic converter thefts on the rise
Posted: Jun 11, 2013 11:40 AM EST Updated: Jun 11, 2013 11:40 AM EST
By LUKE FUNK, Senior Web Producer –

Police in one New Jersey city are warning about a rise in catalytic converter thefts in vehicles at train stations, schools and other areas.

In the past week, there were two daylight thefts of catalytic converters from vehicles, one which was parked at the Linden train station and one which was parked at a private company on the 1900 block of Lower Road.

Linden police say this was in addition to 16 converters, taken from trucks parked at the Linden U-Haul, 1440 E. Edgar Rd. and two, which were taken from vehicles in the parking lots of McManus Middle School and Linden High School.

The thieves are targeting larger vehicles, especially SUVs like the Jeep Cherokee.  Police say that’s because the converters are larger and contain more  platinum, which is currently valued on the open market at approximately $1,500 per ounce.  They are also easier to crawl under to get to the converters.

The crooks are using small battery-powered saws and can cut the converter off in a matter of minutes.

NJ TRANSIT PREPARES FOR MONDAY’S EXPECTED WINTER BLAST

Full System Wide Cross-Honoring in Effect Monday to Offer Customers Additional Travel Options

March 24, 2013

NEWARK, NJ — With another winter blast zeroing in on the Garden State starting late tonight, NJ TRANSIT operations, customer service and police personnel are again taking steps to minimize delays and ensure service reliability and safety.  All customers are strongly advised to check njtransit.com before traveling for up-to-the-minute service information before starting their trip.

To offer customers additional travel options during the expected inclement weather conditions, NJ TRANSIT will offer full system wide cross-honoring on Monday, March 25, enabling NJ TRANSIT customers to reach their final ticketed destination through an alternate travel mode—rail, light rail, as well as on both NJ TRANSIT bus and private bus carriers.

For example, customers who normally take the bus from Rutherford to the Port Authority Bus Terminal may use their ticketed bus pass on the train from Rutherford to New York Penn Station.  Similarly, customers who normally take the bus between Atlantic City and Lindenwold may use their ticketed bus pass on the train instead. Customers using their tickets or passes to travel to a destination other than the destination printed on their original ticket will be subject to the appropriate additional fare if applicable.NJ TRANSIT is preparing to minimize disruptions and delays to the extent possible, particularly in light of the potential for icy conditions and heavy, wet snow which are both expected across portions of the Garden State. Locomotives will be strategically positioned across the rail system to rapidly respond in the event of a disabled train.

Additionally, the agency will closely monitor the crowds at New York Penn Station, Hoboken Terminal and the Port Authority Bus Terminal and make adjustments to service as necessary.

Customers are advised of the following:

• Systemwide:  NJ TRANSIT plans to operate a regular weekday schedule Monday, March 25.  Depending on the impact of the storm, it may be necessary for NJ TRANSIT to modify service as conditions change.
• Bus Service:  While every effort will be made to continue operating bus service throughout the state, customers may experience delays or detours on their routes in the event of extreme winter weather conditions.  Customers are advised to plan accordingly and anticipate disruptions to bus service.

Travel Advice:
• For the latest travel information, visit njtransit.com or access our Twitter feed at @NJ_TRANSIT prior to starting your trip.  In the event of delays or service adjustments, NJ TRANSIT will provide the most current service information via the My Transit alert system, which delivers travel advisories for your specific trip to your cell phone, PDA or pager.  (If you are not yet a My Transit subscriber, we encourage you to sign up at www.njtransit.com/mytransit)  Service information is also available by calling (973) 275-5555 or from broadcast traffic reports.

• Listen closely to public address announcements at stations for late-breaking service information.

• Build additional travel time into your trip to a station, terminal or bus stop.

• Stairs, flooring and platforms can be slippery, so please use caution when walking along wet surfaces or any outdoor surface exposed to the weather. Use extra care when boarding or exiting buses and trains.

• Report slippery or unsafe conditions to bus operators, train crews or NJ TRANSIT staff.

• If you park, ensure your car is stocked with a snow brush and ice scraper so you can clear your car upon returning to the lot.

NJ TRANSIT is well prepared to handle the impending winter weather:
• Snow plows and salt spreaders are ready for service and snow-removal contracts are in place with outside vendors.

• NJ TRANSIT is well-stocked with 16,000 bags of snow-melting supplies, and hundreds of shovels and snow blowers.

• NJ TRANSIT has performed maintenance and testing on its two rail-mounted jet snow blowers in the event they are needed to help clear train tracks of snow and ice, particularly in rail yards.

• More than 750 rail switches, switch heaters and overhead wires were inspected as part of NJ TRANSIT’s preventative maintenance program.

• Onboard heating systems, thermostats, weather stripping and electronic components have been inspected on NJ TRANSIT rail cars, light rail cars and locomotives.

• Bus maintenance personnel have inspected and performed necessary maintenance on a fleet of nearly 2,200 buses – from the heating and airbrake systems, to the engine fluids, tires, windshield wipers and doors.

Red light cameras suit settlement announced
March 14, 2013
the staff of the Ridgewood blog

Ridgewood NJ, News 12 is reporting that a preliminary settlement was filed yesterday in a lawsuit that claims the lights didn’t give drivers ample time to hit the brakes.

Under the terms of the settlement, Arizona-based American Traffic Solutions would set up a $4.2 million fund to pay plaintiffs. The company isn’t admitting any wrongdoing or liability giving drivers ticketed by New Jersey’s red-light cameras last year one step  closer to getting some of their money back.

The suite involved the following towns ; Brick, Deptford, East Brunswick, East Windsor, Jersey City, Lawrence, Linden, Glassboro, Gloucester Township, Monroe, Palisades Park, Piscataway, Pohatcong, Rahway, Roselle Park, Union, Wayne and Woodbridge.

Those ticketed before August 2012 in any of the 18 towns involved in the suite and paid the $85 fine would be eligible to receive money back.

Systemwide:  NJ TRANSIT plans to operate a regular weekday schedule today and tomorrow, December 26 and 27.  Depending on the impact of the storm, it may be necessary for NJ TRANSIT to modify service as conditions change.
Bus Service:  While every effort will be made to continue operating bus service throughout the state, customers may experience delays or detours on their routes in the event of extreme winter weather conditions.  Customers are advised to plan accordingly and anticipate disruptions to bus service.

NJ TRANSIT is prepared to handle the impending winter weather:

Snow plows and salt spreaders are ready for service and snow-removal contracts are in place with outside vendors.
NJ TRANSIT is well-stocked with 16,000 bags of snow-melting supplies, and hundreds of shovels and snow blowers.
NJ TRANSIT has performed maintenance and testing on its two rail-mounted jet snow blowers in the event they are needed to help clear train tracks of snow and ice, particularly in rail yards.
More than 750 rail switches, switch heaters and overhead wires were inspected as part of NJ TRANSIT’s preventative maintenance program.
Onboard heating systems, thermostats, weather stripping and electronic components have been inspected on NJ TRANSIT railcars and locomotives.
Bus maintenance personnel have inspected and performed necessary maintenance on a fleet of nearly 2,200 buses – from the heating and airbrake systems, to the engine fluids, tires, windshield wipers and doors.

PSE&G 54.5% of Ridgewood Customers Still Without Power

PSE&G storm update – Saturday, November 3, 2012 at 11:00 a.m.

With Crews focused on Ridgewood : Currently the VILLAGE of RIDGEWOOD has 10,255 customers served by PSE&G of that 5,586 are with out power leaving 54.5% to be restored

(November 3, 2012 – Newark, NJ) – PSE&G has restored service to 65 percent of those who lost power in Hurricane Sandy.  In the last 24 hours, we restored service to all major gas refineries and 75% of the schools in our service territory.

Also in the last 24 hours we energized all of our switching stations and restored 16 substations.  While energizing switching and substations does not automatically turn the lights on, it is a major step forward and allows us to focus on our distribution systems that are closer to the customer.

Currently about 73 percent of all PSE&G customers have power while 607,000 customers are still without power. At its peak, the storm impacted 1.7 million of PSE&G’s 2.2 million electric customers.

The switching stations that were re-energized are the backbone of our system and they feed substations which we continue to work around the clock to restore.  The 16 substations that we restored in the last 24 hours serve parts of Union Township, Kenilworth, Cranford, and Roselle Park, Bound Brook, Port Newark, Ironbound section of Newark, Hillside, Irvington, Elizabeth, North Plainfield, Bayonne, Jersey City, Linden and Carteret.

We currently have 2,794 mutual aid line workers and tree contractors from out-of-state helping us on the ground.  An additional 319 new workers are due today and 300 more are being sent from Washington, DC.   Another 102 out-of-state personnel who specialize in substations are here assisting our efforts.

PSE&G is focusing its efforts this weekend on those areas where we can restore power to the maximum number of customers. In addition to the municipalities listed below, we continue to address priority customers including hospitals, public safety facilities, schools and water systems throughout our service territory.

Here is a summary of this weekend’s restoration work schedule:

Bergen County
— Of the 333,690 customers in Bergen County, 215,770 lost electricity. As of Saturday morning, 142,100 customers remained without power.
— Crews will be focusing on Teaneck, Englewood, Ridgewood, Fort Lee, Paramus, Bergenfield, Palisades Park, New Milford, River Edge, Glen Rock, Tenafly, Hackensack, Lodi and Bogota this weekend.

GLEN ROCK — After finishing its summer dual-meet schedule undefeated, Ridgewood’s Graydon Swim Team scored 199 points to take third place in Monday’s Lake League championship meet at Glen Rock Public Pool. Wyckoff defeated Radburn of Fair Lawn, 253-218, to win the team title.

The meet was originally supposed to take place on Thursday, July 26, but it was postponed due to lightning and rain. Thus, some Graydon swimmers had left for previously-planned family vacations prior to the make-up date, while other competitors were under the weather, which caused a change in the team’s lineup.

“We do the best that we can with the kids that are available to swim,” said Graydon aquatics director Dan Burzinski. “We had some holes in our lineup, but they stepped up and did the best they could.”

Ridgewood’s Graydon Swim Team produced eight gold-medal winners at Monday’s Lake League championships. Harry Linden (25-yard breaststroke), Emerson Klein (25 butterfly), Faith Cortright (100 freestyle relay) and Sophie Linden (relay).  Luke Cortright (50 butterfly), Ashleigh Afromsky (50 breaststroke, 50 freestyle), Kate Sheridan (relay, 50 backstroke) and Amanda Literati (relay).

Governor Christie Joins PSE&G in Turning Brownfield Green

Governor Christie Joins PSE&G in Turning Brownfield Green
Utility begins work on solar farm and proposes $883 million expansion of solar programs
July 31, 2012

(July 31, 2012 – Hackensack, NJ) – New Jersey Governor Chris Christie lent a hand today as Public Service Electric and Gas (PSE&G) and union workers broke ground on a renewable energy project that will transform a dormant Hackensack, NJ brownfield into a solar farm.
While kicking off work at the job site, PSEG chairman, president and CEO Ralph Izzo also announced that the utility will request New Jersey Board of Public Utilities (BPU) approval to invest up to $883 million to expand the utility’s Solar 4 All and solar loan programs to develop an additional 233 megawatts (MWs) of solar capacity. This expansion will create approximately 300 direct jobs per year over the next five years. PSE&G is a subsidiary of PSEG.

“New Jersey is a national leader in the solar industry,” said Governor Chris Christie. “Solar investment projects like the Hackensack Solar Farm are an integral part of our state’s renewable energy portfolio, increasing New Jersey’s solar capacity, creating jobs and securing the protection of our precious environmental resources. This Administration pledges to continue moving forward with our commitment to develop renewable sources of energy and with corporate partners like PSEG, New Jersey will continue to lead the way.”

“Every time we reclaim a landfill or brownfield site with solar panels, it’s a win for the people of New Jersey,” Izzo said. “Governor Christie deserves recognition for his forceful support of developing green energy projects on these sites, which benefit the state’s economy and environment, as well as the communities where these properties are located. This is the fifth PSE&G project that uses renewable energy to breathe new life into a brownfield or landfill. We are ready to do more of these projects and transform sites like this all over the state to generate more jobs along with clean renewable energy.”

The 1.06-MW PSE&G Hackensack Solar Farm is part of the utility’s Solar 4 All program that is helping New Jersey meet its renewable energy goals in a cost effective manner while creating jobs and helping the state’s green energy sector mature. When the current Solar 4 All program is complete early next year, PSE&G will have created about 175 direct jobs each year for the last three years and spent $300 million with more than a dozen companies that are either headquartered or have a presence in New Jersey while developing 80MWs of solar capacity.

Reclaiming brownfields and landfills has been a centerpiece of PSE&G’s innovative Solar 4 All program. In addition to the Hackensack project, similar installations are in service in Trenton, Edison, Linden and Kearny. When the PSE&G Hackensack Solar Farm begins operation later this year, the utility will have reclaimed more than 40 acres or about 30 football fields of vacant brownfield and landfill space, populating those sites with more than 40,000 solar panels that will produce more than 10 MWs of solar power.

PSE&G’s new solar proposal will call for investing up to $690 million to develop another 136 MWs through its Solar 4 All program to build more grid-connected solar projects on landfills, brownfields and other underutilized properties (90MW), on warehouse roofs (20MW) and on large parking lots (25MW). There is also a 1MW pilot program for solar projects that test and demonstrate emerging solar technologies such as solar energy storage. The company also is seeking to help develop another 97MW through the third installment of its Solar Loan program. This investment, that will help finance solar systems on homes and businesses in PSE&G’s electric service territory, could total up to $193 million, depending on the price of solar renewable energy credits.

“These proposals build on the success of our current programs,” Izzo said. “We are poised to make these New Jersey investments that will create 300 construction jobs per year, provide significant business opportunities for our suppliers and advance the state’s Energy Master Plan objectives.”

PSE&G’s solar loan program has made $177 million of financing available through mid-July 2012 that have helped homeowners and businesses develop 735 installations totaling 55 MWs of solar capacity. Through its Solar 4 All program, PSE&G will have 80MW of solar capacity in service by early 2013 through 24 centralized solar installations as well as the largest pole-attached solar panel initiative in the world.

According to the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA), the 775 MW of solar energy currently installed in New Jersey ranks the state second in the country for installed solar capacity. In the first quarter of 2012, New Jersey had 174 MW of solar energy installed – more than in any other state in the nation. This marks the first time that any state has ranked higher than California in quarterly solar installations.

>Classic Super Bowl promises grand ending to NFL season
By Julian Linden
INDIANAPOLIS | Fri Feb 3, 2012 6:32pm EST
(Reuters) – One of the most tumultuous National Football League (NFL) seasons ever will climax on Sunday when the New York Giants and New England Patriots lock horns in the 46th Super Bowl.

A season that almost did not happen because of the bitter labor dispute between team owners and the players’ union has not only survived but produced a classic encounter between two of the NFL’s most popular franchises.

The United States has been whipped into a frenzy of excitement with more than 70,000 people expected to cram into Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis to watch the game live while an estimated record worldwide audience of more than 160 million are expected to watch the extravaganza unfold on television.

“It’s been an extraordinary year for the NFL on many different levels,” NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said on Friday.”
