A shuttle bus that offered a free reverse commute to passengers to and from the Ridgewood Train Station to their jobs at corporate buildings in Woodcliff Lake, Park Ridge and Montvale will cease operation.

Montvale Councilwoman Leah LaMonica, who was instrumental in finding funding for the three-year-running bus, said at the meeting that the county was “unwilling” to get another grant to keep the wheels on the service in motion. Alicia D’Alessandro, director of communications to the office of Bergen County Executive James J. Tedesco III, confirmed the shuttle’s eventual discontinuation.

“While a final decision hasn’t been made, it is likely that the operation of the shuttle will cease later this spring,” she said in a phone interview after the meeting.

The handicapped-accessible, 16-seat shuttle was funded via a $150,000 three-year environmental grant from NJ Transit in March 2012. The bus provided a reverse commute for passengers to and from the Ridgewood Train Station in Garber Square as early as 7:15 a.m. to as late as 6:30 p.m. LaMonica had worked with former state Assemblywoman Charlotte Vandervalk to provide transportation for commuters to the tri-boro area, which the councilwoman previously said had been underserviced for years.

* New Jersey’s fourth-quarter figures buck the national trends

Venture capitalists invested $320 million in New Jersey companies last year, a decline of $2 million from the previous year and an extension of a downturn in investments in the state that began in 2008. The falloff is in marked contrast to a surge in VC investing nationally that rose to its highest level in 2014 since the end of the dot-com period.

Investments in the Garden State have dropped by about $400 million since the recession, with the drop slowing in recent years, according to a report released Friday.

During the fourth quarter, about $51.9 million was put into 11 deals in New Jersey, a more than $100 million drop from the quarter prior. Only one of last quarter’s deals included a North Jersey company. Teleservices Solutions Holdings LLC, a telecommunications company in Montvale, received $540,000 early-stage investment.

Investors poured the most money into New Jersey’s medical devices and equipment industry. Venture capitalists invested $22.4 million in the state’s medical device industry during the fourth quarter. For the full year, that sector had nearly $81.7 million in investments, making it the most-invested industry in New Jersey last year.

The retail and distribution sector was second with $80 million invested last year. Biotechnology, which has held such promise for job growth in the state, was third with $41.6 million in investments by year’s end.

Lure of the South takes a toll on corporate NJ; new demographics, globalization play roles

THE RECORD

Forty-five years after New Jersey’s manufacturing industry began its decline, as companies started moving their factories to the South, there are signs that the state’s corporate sector may be going the same route.

Tuesday’s announcement by Mercedes-Benz USA that it plans to move its corporate headquarters from Montvale to metro Atlanta followed similar announcements in the last 18 months by Hertz of Park Ridge, which moved to Florida’s Gulf Coast, and Sealed Air of Elmwood Park, which is moving to Charlotte, N.C.

So now three Fortune 500 companies, along with nearly 2,000 jobs, are moving or have moved to Southern locations that years ago would likely not even have been considered by corporate executives.

Though they cited reasons for their moves specific to their business or industry, it’s clear that the South now holds an attraction that it once did not. A variety of factors are in play, including lower taxes and operating costs, an improved quality of life and a stronger workforce.

“I don’t think it’s a tidal wave yet,” said James Hughes, dean of the Bloustein School of Planning & Public Policy at Rutgers University. But change is clearly afoot, he said.

“What’s changed is the perception of the South,” he said. “After the first frontier companies moved there, they proved that there is no problem securing a high-quality workforce, and that people would migrate there if there were good jobs available.”

To be sure, many companies have left New Jersey for other destinations. New York’s Rockland and Orange counties, for example, still attract a good number of companies, including Hunter Douglas and Croton Watch Co. recently. Yet the lure of the South appears to be growing.

New Jersey “worked tirelessly” for months to persuade Mercedes-Benz USA to stay in Montvale, the car company said Tuesday, including several meetings and calls between Governor Christie and company CEO Stephen Cannon and a last-ditch offer three days ago.

The state wielded an arsenal of incentive programs that were revamped just over a year ago to enable New Jersey to award more generous tax breaks that would counter the high cost of doing business in the state.

Yet the state’s effort fell short, rebuffed by the reality that even the heavily fortified programs – which enabled New Jersey in 2014 to award about $2 billion in breaks – couldn’t negate the high cost of doing business in the state, and the lure of Atlanta, where the company said Tuesday it will move its heaN.J.’s incentives to Mercedes couldn’t offset cost of doing business

While critics immediately suggested that the German car giant’s departure announcement showed the redundancy of the state’s strategy of offering big-dollar tax breaks, state officials dismissed that suggestion.

Michael Drewniak, a spokesman for Christie, said the governor “took a direct role in trying to keep Mercedes-Benz USA in New Jersey.”

Another Company looks to leave High Tax Bergen County

Mercedes-Benz reportedly weighing move to Atlanta from Montvale

The German luxury automaker Mercedes-Benz is looking to move its 1,000-employee North American headquarters from Montvale to Atlanta, several sources said Tuesday.

The Atlanta Business Chronicle first reported on Tuesday that Mercedes-Benz USA is considering the move. A company spokesman declined to comment on the report, but several sources told The Record that Mercedes-Benz was indeed considering leaving Bergen County. One source within the company told The Record that an announcement on a move may come in January, at a company reception.

“As a matter of policy, the company does not comment on rumors or speculation,” said Mercedes-Benz spokesman Rob Moran.

If the reports are accurate, Mercedes-Benz would be the latest in a string of major companies to move their corporate headquarters from Bergen County to the South. The car-rental company Hertz moved from Park Ridge to south Florida, and the BubbleWrap maker Sealed Air is moving from Elmwood Park to Charlotte, N.C., both with the help of tax incentives from those states.

Montvale would be losing its second-largest private employer, behind the accounting giant KPMG, according to the Bergen County Economic Development Corp. Mercedes-Benz is among the top 10 corporate employers in the county and paid $916,700 in local taxes on its properties this year, according to the borough’s website.

Sounds Familiar : More development pressures in Bergen

News and commentary from Bergen County’s many municipalities besieged by heavy-handed development proposals underscores boiling dissatisfaction with plans for gross changes in heretofore cherished communities.

Ordinary residents can’t accept claims that big development won’t bring negative impacts, and they can’t understand why their elected and appointed officials and “experts” paid with local property taxes buy into those claims.

Montvale’s Hoboken-based “master planner,” who touts experience developed in Johannesburg and elsewhere in Africa, has told locals that state planners encourage denser development than has prevailed in Bergen traditionally.

That requires zoning changes blessed by planners and local officials alike. The blessings can lead to snags. Montvale’s mayor has told residents he testified in court for four days in a lawsuit brought by The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Co.

In a case that has received virtually no public attention, A&P makes the thunderous charge that Montvale is guilty of “spot zoning” in favor of one family of local farmers and their development partners.

Whether or not the court agrees, proposals in Montvale and elsewhere in Bergen are pitting the few against the many.

HACKENSACK — A study on bringing bus rapid transit to Bergen County has culled a list of potential routes down to three.

They are:

• Montvale Park and Ride to Secaucus Junction, with stops at Paramus Park Mall, Bergen Community College, Garden State Plaza, a future Summit Avenue bus stop in Hackensack, the Meadowlands and Harmon Meadow.

• Paramus Park to Secaucus Junction, with stops at Bergen Town Center, downtown Hackensack, the Meadowlands and the Bergen Community College Lyndhurst campus. The downtown Hackensack stops include Hackensack University Medical Center, the Essex Street train station, the Bergen County Courthouse and the Hackensack bus terminal.

• Paterson’s Broadway Bus Terminal to Englewood Hospital, with stops at St. Joseph’s Medical Center, Garden State Plaza, downtown Hackensack and Overpeck County Park.

Bergen County, NJ Transit and a team of consultants presented the routes Thursday night at the Bergen Community College Hackensack campus. Their aim, said Joseph Barr, a consultant with Parsons Brinckerhoff, is to bring faster, more reliable and easier to use bus service to the county.

The team estimates the three routes will carry about 9,000 riders a day.

MONTVALE – Mentally, Ridgewood may have popped the celebratory cork a tad early.

The Maroons won the All Groups Boys Basketball Tournament title with an 85-70 victory over Cresskill on Monday night at Pascack Hills that was made possible by a magnificent first quarter.

Ridgewood (3-1) was near perfect in the opening eight minutes and built a 30-4 lead, only to watch as Cresskill (2-2) began fighting back late in the second quarter and came as close as 75-64 midway through the fourth.

“I think we were too confident,” Ridgewood senior guard Tim Nolan said. “We were overconfident, definitely, because we saw we were up so much, so I guess we pulled back a little bit. We just have to get used to keep going and keep attacking and keep pressuring even more.”

RIDGEWOOD — A donor registration drive for a 22-year-old village resident battling Hodgkin’s lymphoma attracted more than 500 people on Saturday.

Patrice Foresman of Montvale’s Community Blood Services said it was one of the most successful drives in which she has ever participated.

The four-hour drive, which was held in Village Hall, had to be extended an hour to accommodate everyone. The purpose was to find a match for Anthony Daniels, who was diagnosed at age 20 and has twice been in remission.

“It was a sweeping success, due to the tireless efforts of the Daniels family and all the volunteers who wanted to be part of something really important,” Foresman said Monday after shipping the samples to Minnesota for analysis.

Hodgkin’s lymphoma is a cancer of the immune system that attacks white blood cells. Daniels needs a bone marrow stem-cell transplant — a procedure he described as “a last resort.”

Ridgewood NJ, Before his visit  Rep. Scott Garrett (R-NJ) issued the following statement after the House passed a Continuing Resolution to fund the government through December 15, 2013 that defunds ObamaCare:

“Today, I voted for a bill that would fund the government in full, except for ObamaCare.  ObamaCare continues to be a train wreck.  The strain it puts on our families, our businesses, and our economy is very real.  Businesses are reluctant to expand and hire new workers.  Employees have seen their hours reduced and their health insurance costs go up.  And, even President Obama knows ObamaCare is unworkable.  Just recently, the president had to delay the employer mandate.  ObamaCare is not working for America.  I cast my vote today for my constituents, the great state of New Jersey, and the majority of Americans who all know that ObamaCare must be immediately defunded and replaced.”
