Ramsey NJ, Dr. Matthew Murphy, superintendent of the Ramsey Public Schools, has extended an invitation to the Ridgewood community to attend their Parent Academy with Kate Fagan, author of What Made Maddy Run, on Monday, January 29 at 7 p.m. at the Ramsey High School Auditorium. Madison Holleran graduated from NHRHS prior to attending University of Pennsylvania.
What Made Maddy Run is a very powerful book that discusses some of the challenges that children are facing: social media, mental illness, and suicide. In fact, all staff members have received a copy of the book and Ms. Fagan will be addressing the entire staff in the afternoon. Later in the afternoon, she will be addressing our student-athletes and coaches to talk about the additional pressures of being a scholar-athlete. These are just some examples being taken towards the District’s Goal of Enhancing the Student Experience via a focus on Wellness.
An evening with author Kate Fagan:”Ms. Fagan brings enormous credibility and I think her story will be interesting to many,” wrote Dr. Murphy. “She played basketball for the University of Colorado and finished her career as one of the Big 12’s top scorers and then played 2 seasons in the WNBA. Following athletics, Ms. Fagan has worked for the Philadelphia Inquirer and now is a writer for ESPN. She has appeared on “Around the Horn.” She has written several books and has established herself as a sportswriter with knowledge and insight that is useful and important, especially young athletes.”

Ridgewood NJ, Juilliard Chamber Orchestra Comes to West Side Presbyterian Church
The Juilliard Chamber Orchestra will perform at West Side Presbyterian Church on Sunday, February 11 at 3:00 pm as part of the West Side Concert Series. The conductorless ensemble is coached by Eric Bartlett, who is a 31-year veteran of the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, a Juilliard faculty member and a New York Philharmonic cellist. Admission and parking are free; donations are welcome.
The 2017-2018 season marks the 42nd season of the West Side Concert Series. Throughout its long history, the series has presented a wide variety of solo, instrumental and ensemble concerts in the classical, African-American and jazz traditions.

Just as they remember Ridgewood taxpayers successfully suing the district about morally corrupting surveys administered to our children at school without our knowledge.
AND just as we remember pounding away at the Board of Education at their periodic meetings and on this blog for over a year in order to correct the “math ghetto” situation the district had gotten some of our elementary schools into by allowing school principals free choice of what math curriculum to use (remedial urban-targetted so-called “reform math” having gotten a partial foothold here).
AND as we remember exposing the radical “reform math” ideology of an incoming district superintendent and his equally radical educational-elite wife before he arrived in town, causing him to quit before he even started work (rather than go through here the agony he deservedly suffered in his just-prior job in Long Island…).

Riverdale NJ,GOP Assemblywomen Holly Schepisi has joined the Assembly Education, Housing, and Health and Human Services committees as well as the Joint Committee on Housing Affordability in a Facebook post Schepisi explained ,
“Excited to announce that for the 2018-2020 legislative session, I have joined the Assembly Education, Housing, and Health and Human Services committees as well as the Joint Committee on Housing Affordability.
While in office, I have become one of the louder voices in Trenton regarding the need to reform how we fund our schools and how we address housing affordability. Too often these issues are compartmentalized and as a result no proper solutions are discussed or implemented. With the new changes to the federal tax law, now is the time to have bipartisan discussions regarding how to fund our schools in a different manner. Suburban residents pay upwards of 70 percent of their property tax burden to fund schools. High property taxes in turn drive unaffordability in our housing markets, resulting in seniors, our young and our middle class being unable to stay in their homes as well as causing our businesses to leave our communities. Providing “outside of the box” solutions we can work together towards making New Jersey a State that people and companies want to move into rather than a State with a continued exodus.
My first proposal will include a minimum of school funding for every child in this State that follows such child regardless of where they attend public school. Every child should be worth no less than $2,500 per year for education. Many of our communities currently receive under $700 per child per year under the current educational formula. This is wrong and needs to be fixed.”
RHS has been languishing at the 26 position for years now. In a state the size of NJ this is not good. Real progress would be moving higher the ranks but it hasn’t been happening. What’s up with Willard, why does rank worse than the other elementary schools of RW?

Ridgewood NJ, the Ridgewood Police report that on January 10, a middle school Home and School Association discovered an unknown person instructed the treasurer of the H.S.A. to wire transfer money without authorization. The H.S.A. determined the email request was a fraud, the bank was immediately notified and the wire transfer was canceled. The Ridgewood Detective Bureau is investigating the incident.

Ridgewood NJ, For 72 years, the Jamboree Scholarship Fund has raised funds for need-based college scholarships for graduating RHS seniors by presenting an original musical revue, “Jamboree”. Each year more than 125 RHS parents and guardians contribute to the show by singing, dancing, acting, performing in the band, designing and making costumes, building sets, and being back-stage heroes. The whole production and all Jamboree fundraising efforts are 100 percent voluntary.

Ridgewood NJ, in her new book, The Campus Cure: A Parent’s Guide to Mental Health and Wellness for College Students is a first aid guide to your child’s emotional health, preparing you to handle the mental health problems and emotional ups and downs many young adults experience in college. With anecdotes and the latest scientific literature, this book will increase your awareness of common problems, pressures, and crises in college; illustrate how you can support your child and collaborate with campus resources; and provide stories of hope to parents who often feel alone and overwhelmed when their child experiences a mental health problem. While you have the passion to help your child, this book will provide you with the tools to guide your child toward health and happiness in the college years.
After decades as a psychiatrist working with college students, Dr. Marcia Morris took on a mission: to educate parents of high school and college students about the dramatic increase in mental health problems young adults experience, and the practical tools parents can use to help their children. Her 2015 New York Times article, “Dear Parent, Your Child Has Had a Psychotic Break” received widespread attention from both parents and mental health professionals. Her parenting articles have appeared in the Tampa Bay Times, The Conversation, the Gainesville Sun, and the Ocala Star Banner. She currently writes a Psychology Today parenting blog on “College Wellness: Promoting Happiness and Health in the College Years.”
Educating other psychiatrists about university mental health, Dr. Morris has written articles in psychiatry publications about suicide prevention, sexual assault, and medical student stress. In 2017, she presented talks at national meetings of the American Psychiatric Association, American College Counseling Association, and Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education on the role of parents in college mental health. Dr. Morris is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Florida College of Medicine and the Associate Program Director for Student Health Psychiatry. Dr. Morris received an undergraduate degree from Harvard University, a medical degree from Yale University, and psychiatry residency training at New York Hospital Cornell Medical Center. She is a Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and a member of its College Mental Health Caucus.
Dr. Morris is committed to working with both parents and health care providers to find solutions to the intensifying college mental health crisis. With “The Campus Cure,” she hopes to give parents the tools that will lead their child from distress to success.

Super Science Saturday was started in 1989 by Mr. Jim Wallace, a sixth grade science teacher at Ridgewood’s Benjamin Franklin Middle School. What began solely as a science day for students has evolved into a broad experience for children, adults, and families from all over the tri-state area. Now in its 28th year, Super Science Saturday is an annual, half-day, non-competitive event providing a showcase for the variety of scientific explorations and applications that are alive in our community. Not only do professional science presenters share their work, it is unique in that students present alongside them, learning from adult presenters as mentors and peers.
Though Mr. Wallace has since retired from the Ridgewood Public Schools, his small idea has grown to a day that brings over 1,500 area residents together to celebrate science. As we look to “reinvent” Super Science Saturday this year, we increasingly rely on the community to provide support before and during the event.
