The Valley Hospital of Ridgewood is Offering Concussion Baseline Testing on June 29

Parents, Coaches: Know the Risks of Concussions in Youth Sports

June 7,2016

the staff of the Ridgewood blog

Ridgewood NJ, To assist parents and coaches in protecting young athletes from the serious head injuries that can result from returning to play too soon after a suffering a concussion, The Valley Hospital Sports Institute offers the ImPACT Concussion Management Test.  ImPACT (Immediate Post Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing) is an innovative computerized evaluation system that assesses the effects and severity of a concussion and helps determine when it is safe for an athlete to return to contact sports following a concussion.

ImPACT testing is suitable for athletes ages 10 and older.  Testing is appropriate in a “group setting” for athletes ages 11 and older.  It is a 20-30 minute neurocognitive test battery
that includes measures of verbal and visual memory, attention span, brain processing speed, and reaction time and balance.  If an athlete experiences a concussion, he or she is re-tested and the baseline data is compared to the post-concussion data to monitor recovery and to help determine when it is safe for the player to return to active sports.  This comparison helps to diagnose and manage the concussion.  Follow-up tests can be administered over days or weeks so clinicians can continue to track the athlete’s recovery from the injury.

The Sports Institute recently enhanced its Concussion Management Program with the addition of the Biodex Biosway Balance testing unit.  The test takes about 5 minutes and provides a psycho-motor assessment of concussion injuries.  Athletes should be tested in the preseason to gather baseline information that can be used for comparison in the event of a concussion to assess the extent of the injury and the athlete’s readiness to return to activity.

Since most high schools in the area have the testing in place already, the Sports Institute is providing this service primarily for the recreation and town-sponsored youth sports teams for athletes ages 11 and older.

The next scheduled baseline testing sessions will take place on Wednesday, June 29, at Valley’s Kraft Center, located at 15 Essex Road in Paramus.  Two sessions will be held on that date: at 4:30 p.m. and at 6:00 p.m. at The tests will be conducted in the 3rd Floor Computer Lab.

Pre-Registration is required, as space is limited.  The fee is $25.  Please call 201-447-8133 for more information and to register.

A concussion is a brain injury.  Concussions are most commonly caused by a bump or blow to the head, but, can also be caused by a sudden deceleration or acceleration of the head.  In either scenario, the brain, suspended inside the skull and surrounded by fluid, continues to travel with momentum until it “bangs” up against the skull – causing a brain-bruising injury – or concussion.  What may seem to be a mild bump or blow to the head can be serious.

You can’t see a concussion.  Signs and symptoms of a concussion can show up right after the injury, or may not appear or be noticed until days or weeks after the injury.  If your child reports any symptoms of concussion, or if you notice the symptoms yourself, seek medical attention right away.  Common symptoms include: headache, dizziness, feeling foggy, nausea, fatigue and confusion.  Common signs include memory loss, a loss of balance and coordination, and changes in personality.  Concussion severity varies widely, and the number of signs and symptoms vary also – serious injuries may show few symptoms.

Although less common, bleeding in the brain can occur with some head injuries.  Loss of consciousness, mental status deterioration and worsening symptoms raise the concern for a bleeding injury.  An athlete does not need to lose consciousness (black out) to suffer a concussion.  In fact, less than 10 percent of concussed athletes lose consciousness.

An athlete who suffers a concussion can be at risk for a condition known as Second Impact Syndrome if he or she returns to sports before full recovery.  Second impact syndrome is a life-threatening condition in which a second concussion occurs before a first concussion has properly healed, causing rapid and severe brain swelling.  Second impact syndrome can result from even a very mild concussion that occurs days or weeks after the initial concussion.

“Second Impact Syndrome can be prevented,” Donald Tomaszewski, Director of The Valley Hospital Sports Institute.  “Don’t allow an athlete to return to sports after a concussion until their symptoms have completely resolved and they have been cleared by a medical professional experienced in treating concussions.”

Ridgewood Crew Sponsors “Come take a spin” Today at Van Neste Square 10-2

June 4th 2016
the staff of the Ridgewood blog

Ridgewood NJ, Join Ridgewood Crew/Maroon Blades in Van Neste Square from 10-2 to experience the thrill and learn the benefits of rowing. National Learn to Row Day is today Saturday, June 4.

According to Ridgewood Crew the Top 10 Benefits of Rowing:

Promotes healthy body composition: Rowing can help maintain a healthy balance of fat mass and fat-free mass in your body. If an analysis of your body composition indicates that your body fat is high, rowing can be a good way to burn off fat, as it is predominantly an aerobic sport. In fact, you can easily burn up to 600 calories per hour.
Enhances cardio-respiratory system: Rowing enhances your lung’s ability to provide oxygen to the blood, heart and the rest of your body. A lack of cardio-respiratory fitness is closely linked to heart disease. The good news is that improving your aerobic fitness can be done in short intervals, so it does not take too much time out of your day. All you need is 30 minutes of steady state exercise – or 10 minutes of high intensity intervals – in the boat or on the rowing machine.
Offers low impact exercise with high results: Both competitive and recreational rowing are unique in comparison to most sports because they exercise all of your major muscle groups. Everything from your legs, back and arms are engaged while rowing. In addition, rowing is a low-impact sport. When executed properly, the rowing stroke is a fairly safe motion, providing little room for the serious injury often found in contact and high-impact sports.
Promotes weight loss: Competitive rowers expend almost twice the number of calories on a 2,000-meter course as a runner in a 3,000-meter steeplechase. However, since rowing is low impact, you will not experience the same wear and tear on your body and joints as you would if you were a runner. Plus, you build strength in your upper body and core.
Helps the heart: Cardiovascular training involves any activity that requires the use of the large muscle groups of the body in a regular and uninterrupted manner. Rowing is one of the few non-weight bearing sports that exercises all the major muscle groups.
Builds muscle strength: The primary muscles that rowers work are the quadriceps, the large muscles in front of your thighs. These muscles are necessary for extending the knee, and they also serve as hip flexors, which allow you to make powerful leg movements. As your quadriceps become stronger, activities and exercises such as walking, jogging, lunges and squats can be done more efficiently and with greater strength.
Reduces stress: The consistent and rhythmic activity associated with rowing, combined with being outdoors on the water, has an unparalleled impact on reducing stress.
Stabilizes the body: Rowing in a boat requires the stabilizer and neutralizer muscles to fire up. Those same muscles might help to avoid a fall or help keep you from hurting your back when lifting a child or a heavy box awkwardly. Your core, or trunk, becomes stronger and better prepared to handle off-balanced movement.
Improves muscle and joint mobility: Rowing conditions many different muscles and joints without straining them, making this exercise ideal for those with arthritis or osteoporosis. The muscles and joints experience a wide range of movement during rowing, which will eventually minimize stiffness and increase flexibility. If you live a sedentary lifestyle or become stiff after long periods of inactivity, loosen your muscles and joints by rowing at a moderate pace for 20 to 30 minutes.
Offers a full-body exercise: A rowing machine works the lower and middle back, hamstrings, calves, gluteal muscles and biceps. Rowing works more body parts than most cardiovascular machines, and it provides a low-impact exercise that people of various fitness levels can complete comfortably.

Come take a spin on an erg and get THE BEST WORKOUT of your life!
When: Today, June 4
Stop in anytime between 10-2
Where: Van Neste Square
See you there!!!

Reader says Ridgewood Sports Parents need to “Smarten up”

RHS stadium theridgewoodblog.net 2

I was at the football game at Giants Stadium and the football game the week before at RHS. Both featured parents and students who were obviously intoxicated.

I am no tea totaller and I have no problem with an adult having a cocktail or a couple beers with lunch or dinner before these events. But to go out and drink with intention of getting drunk is just gross. Especially with all these HS kids there. It is not right to get smashed in front of your kids.

I also dont believe in strict enforcement for the kids. I dont want breathalyzers for kids to attend events. Far be it from me to judge a kid who has a couple drinks before a game.

BUT when there are kids who can hardly walk and who are falling over other kids in the stands, the teacher or cops standing there have to step in. If nothing else by teaching there are limits you keep kids from getting out of control and doing harm to themselves or others. I saw behavior from kids at both games that should have had consequences. If you want to “go soft” then at least tell them to leave the event. In reality some of them probably should have received punishment from the school.

The bottom line is that at both football games, I was uncomfortable having my 1st grader there. I actively monitored the crowd because there was a real threat of a fight between parents and/or students at RHS and I was concerned about my kid getting trampled accidentally. At Giants Stadium, we actually moved seats to get away from the students precisely because there were some who were falling over trying to walk down the steps to their seats.

Bottom line: there is a line between creating a police state for parents and students and the free for all frat party that existed at those games I attended and now reportedly a the lacrosse games. We all have to smarten up or we will end up with strict enforcement from police and less fun for everyone.

Church League in Ridgewood gets the Shaft with Field usage

May 3,2016
the staff of the Ridgewood blog

Ridgewood NJ, the Church League is once again getting the shaft with field usage in the Village. In recently procured emails ,the Ridgewood blog has learned that Church League officials will not know until Friday night  whether they have fields available for the weekend .

“We have had a number of Somerville NW and SE uses on Sunday afternoons this
year.  Any use would be subject to being checked with me on Friday to
confirm if still available and which field.”

Ed

Ed

I am not sure what you are saying.  Can we are can we not have fields.  I do
not understand why I league that is now 25 years old and is part of the
community cannot get fields.

Richard

The Church league has been around for 25 years .Clearly this is no way to run a season . But the bigger question remains who is using all the taxpayer funded fields 24/7 in the Village of Ridgewood . Who are these people playing sports into the late hours and where do they come from? Why does the Village really have a filed shortage ? Who decides who plays and who does not and who screens who is playing to begin with?

Sammy Cermack, former Ridgewood star, drafted in first-ever professional women’s lacrosse league

Sammy Cermack, the 2010 Star-Ledger Player of the Year, was drafted in the first-ever professional women’s lacrosse league in April.
By Brian Deakyne | For NJ Advance Media
on April 29, 2016 11:44 AM

Much of Sammy Cermack’s life has revolved around lacrosse.

Cermack, a John Hopkins University product that played a lead role in Ridgewood’s first-ever Tournament of Champions title six years ago, was named The Star-Ledger/NJ.com Player of the Year in 2010 and finished her high school career as one of the most productive players in state history.

After etching her name in the history books back then – when Ridgewood became the first team other than Moorestown to win a ToC title – Cermack scripted another chapter in her storied career two weeks ago, when she was selected by the Philadelphia Force in the inaugural draft of the United Women’s Lacrosse League.

The league, which will begin its expansion season in late May, is comprised of four teams – the Philadelphia Force, Long Island Sound, Baltimore Ride, and Boston Storm. Cermack was selected 39th overall.
