Anti-Independent Contractor Law AB5 Dramatic loss of income in California, independent contractors and small business owners nationwide fearful

Paramus NJ, When California’s AB5 went into effect on January 1, supporters promised the law would result in the reclassification of numerous independent contractors to full- and part-time workers with benefits. Instead, the law’s first month has proved a catastrophe for scores of independent contractors who have lost income, longtime clients and, in some cases, their entire livelihoods overnight. Despite the devastating effects of the law in California, lawmakers in other states are considering enacting similar legislation as Congress plans to vote on a federal version, referred to as the PRO Act (HR2474), this week.

The law purports to protect workers who are misclassified, but its clumsy wording harms thousands of independent contractors who wish to keep their thriving businesses. A wide variety of independent contractors, including journalists and writers, translators, musicians, pilates and yoga instructors, per diem nurses and many more have begun to experience the devastation that the law is causing.

Trenton NJ, GOP Gubernatorial Candidate Jack Ciattarelli  trashes Gov. Murphy’s Energy Master Plan; “Not only is the Governor’s energy master plan unrealistic, but like his other policy proposals, it will drive up costs on families, retirees and small businesses, and worsen a state economy that is already dead last or next to last in job growth, wage growth and fiscal health.

Where is the Governor going to find the money for his grandiose plan to force conversion of furnaces, hot water heaters, stoves, and dryers to electric? Assemblyman Jay Webber said the plan is irresponsible and called on the Legislature to stop it from moving forward.“The governor’s plan would effectively end natural gas service in New Jersey; but, New Jerseyans need natural gas, which is an abundant, affordable, clean and reliable energy source,” said Webber (R-Morris). “Not only are 75 percent of our homes and businesses heated with natural gas, but about 50 percent of our electricity is generated from it. Natural gas also is critical as a raw material for manufacturing.”
