Newark NJ, five NJ Transit police officers have been awarded a collective $535,000 in settlements after filing lawsuits accusing a now-retired sergeant, Melvin Webb, of sexual harassment and creating a hostile work environment. The lawsuits, originally filed in Camden County state court in 2021, brought to light troubling allegations against Webb during his time as a supervisor.

NJ Supreme Court Invalidates State Workplace Confidentiality Directive Regulation

Trenton NJ, the New Jersey Supreme Court issued a decision today invalidating a state employment regulation that required state workplace investigators to request victims and witnesses in harassment investigations to keep all aspects of the investigation confidential.  The Court held that the challenged regulation, N.J.A.C. 4A:7-3.1(j), was unconstitutionally overbroad and struck the relevant portion concerning the confidentiality directive.  The decision is a major victory for employees and their rights to speak freely and openly about issues of workplace discrimination and sexual harassment.

The new law mandates the NJ Legislature to adopt a policy prohibiting sexual harassment by members, officers, and employees

Trenton NJ, Senator Kristin Corrado’s bill requiring the first update of the Legislature’s sexual harassment policy in more than a decade was signed by the governor.

“I want to send a loud and clear message that sexual harassment will not be tolerated,” said Corrado (R-40). “News reports, and testimony we have heard in Trenton indicate sexual misconduct is more prevalent than we could have imagined. That has to end. The Legislature will lead by example with a no-nonsense policy that clearly provides protections from harassment and assault.”
