Chris Christie Previews 2016 Campaign: ‘It’s Time to Start Offending People’

“I don’t care if I’m loved. I want to be respected.”

BY TIM ALBERTA

October 21, 2014 New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie launched a preemptive strike Tuesday against some potential Republican rivals for the White House, saying the “experiment” of promoting a lawmaker to president has failed—and arguing that Republicans must nominate a governor in 2016.

Christie, chairman of the Republican Governors Association, began his speech to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce in Washington by lauding his counterparts across the country. Then he turned on a dime, pivoting in apparently premeditated fashion from 2014 to 2016. He urged attendees to support GOP governors this fall—not only to help them win reelection, he said, but to build a roster of credible presidential contenders.

“To have any chance of electing a Republican president, there’s a bunch of things we need to do. But the first is to have a good bench of Republican candidates,” Christie said. “And I am convinced that the next president of the United States is going to be a governor—and needs to be.”

Christie continued: “We have had an experiment of a legislator who has never run anything getting on-the-job training in the White House. It has not been pretty. And so we need to have a big and broad bench of good, experienced Republican governors to select from in 2016.”

The remarks may well represent Christie’s most forceful intra-party offensive to date, a preemptive and unprompted attack against unnamed “legislators”—including Sens. Rand Paul, Marco Rubio, and Ted Cruz—who almost certainly will be competing with him in 2016.

In a brief interview with National Journal after his speech, Christie was unapologetic about his remarks — and acknowledged they wouldn’t be well-received by certain presidential aspirants.

“Listen, I just say what I believe, and whoever is offended is offended,” Christie said.

‘Plunge protection’ behind market’s sudden recovery

‘Plunge protection’ behind market’s sudden recovery

By John Crudele

October 20, 2014 | 11:08pm

Mysterious forces were trying their best, but they couldn’t keep the stock market from swooning Wednesday.

They failed in the morning, despite massive purchases of stock index futures contracts. Within minutes of the market’s opening, the Dow Jones industrial average was down 350 points. Later in the day — after a lot of shocking ebb and flow — the Dow bottomed out with a decline of 460 points.

It was only in the last hour of trading that the market saviors managed to trim the Dow loss to just 173 points. And they succeeded only after Janet Yellen’s private, upbeat remarks about the economy were leaked.

Welcome to a new kind of stock market — one that the average investor should refuse to be invested in.

Anyone whose investments tightly track the major indices is now losing money since the beginning of 2014. The Dow is down 1.1 percent on the year, with the S&P and Nasdaq up 3 percent for 2014.

Empowerment, Not Entitlement

Empowerment, Not Entitlement
Oct. 21 ,2014
By Brian Goldberg | The Save Jersey Blog

As a middle-class, Jewish Republican from heavily Democrat Essex County (and, no, I’m not the only one…), I’ve seen firsthand the number of “closet conservatives” who won’t join our Party because of popular myths characterizing us as, well, take your pick: prejudiced, having a war on women, or out of touch with young voters.

During the course of my recent U.S. Senate campaign, I talked about the need for outreach to these communities that have been traditionally underrepresented in the Republican Party. There, we can find lots of conservatives who just need to know that we’re welcoming and the myths aren’t true. But, it is a two-part process to grow our Party.

Before we can even seek out potential converts, it is helpful to have a plan to bring them on board. For too long, our Party has done a poor job of fighting off the label our opponents gave us, the “Party of No”, the party who always says, “We don’t want this,” “We are against that.” Instead, we need to embrace a positive message, one that our friends, neighbors and families can feel proud to get behind.

Well, how about turning that “Party of No” nonsense right on its head? The conservative message and platform isn’t negative, it is actually as optimistic and positive as can be. We believe that if you give individuals a chance to succeed, they will find that Success. We believe that small, limited government should mostly stay out of the lives of its citizens, but when it does get involved, the job of government should be to help the governed to succeed, not simply help the governed. We don’t believe you are destined for a life of failure and therefore need the government to protect you from your own actions.

We are the Party of Optimists!

ObamaCare Shunts My Patients Into Medicaid

ObamaCare Shunts My Patients Into Medicaid

Knocked out of private insurance, they are forced to settle for longer waits and worse care

Rep. Scott Garrett Take a minute to read this eyeopening article about ObamaCare written by Dr. Jeffrey Singer, a general surgeon in Phoenix, Ariz.

His take: “Even if my patients save money by no longer paying premiums, they suffer in the long run by being trapped in a subpar health-care system [Medicaid]… ObamaCare has shifted—and will continue to shift—people into substandard and often-delayed care, all in the name of increasing health-care “coverage.” That is the saddest irony of all.”

Thirty years of experience in private medical practice uncovers many ironies. For example, recently several of my patients who had been paying for their own individual health insurance informed me that they were forced off private insurance and placed into Medicaid when they signed up for health care at Healthcare.gov. This unwanted change—built into ObamaCare with the intention of helping patients—has harmed them by taking away their freedom to choose a health-care plan that works best for them.

This is not an unusual phenomenon. A recent Boston University/Harvard Medical School study suggests that up to 80% of people participating in ObamaCare’s Medicaid expansion have been shifted off their private insurance. These patients’ plans—that they liked, and were told they could keep—did not meet Affordable Care Act requirements, and were wiped out. Healthcare.gov offered them Medicaid.

But the irony doesn’t stop there. Even if my patients save money by no longer paying premiums, they suffer in the long run by being trapped in a subpar health-care system. A Medicaid card does not translate into quality medical care. In some cases, it does not translate into medical care at all.

The ugly truth about Cory Booker, New Jersey’s golden boy

The ugly truth about Cory Booker, New Jersey’s golden boy

It’s eight o’clock on a Sunday night in Jersey City, and for the first time this October it’s cold enough to see your breath in front of you with a deep exhale of the Hudson River air. It’s curious, given that, to see a group of a few dozen residents and visitors from neighboring towns assembled in a parking lot next to the train station—while the New York Giants are playing, no less. The workout-gear-clad mayor, Steven Fulop, is hopping up and down with his arms crossed over his chest for warmth, asking me when I think “he” will arrive. (Nuzzi/The Daily Beast)

The Record

S. Egidio
17 N Broad St
Ridgewood, NJ 07450

The menu: mostly pizza. The setting: tiny. The phone: often ignored. The wait for a table: sometimes an hour.

And no wonder: Ridgewood newcomer S. Egidio is a local novelty, an Italian restaurant run by a newly arrived Italian chef with food that is both authentic and creative.

Its menu is simple: Italian cured meat, imported cheeses, salads, a few appetizers, and Neapolitan pizzas that are blasted for a minute in a 1,000-degree oven until blistered and bubbling. Occasionally, there are pasta specials; sandwiches are served at lunch.

Ridgewood outsources some of its leaf pickup duties

The Ridgewood News

Leaf collection will be outsourced in one area of Ridgewood this fall.

Last week, the Village Council awarded a $65,000 contract for leaf pickup in Ridgewood’s leafiest section (including the Heights) to the sole bidder, Hawthorne-based Downes Tree Service. The council also approved plans and specifications for leaf pickup, removal and hauling prepared by the village.

The revised plans and the outsourcing are part of an effort, helmed by Village Manager Roberta Sonenfeld, to improve resident satisfaction with leaf collection this fall. Sonenfeld involved workers in a recent leaf collection improvement discussion.

“This is part of our ‘turning over a new leaf,'” quipped Sonenfeld, when the contract was introduced Oct. 1.

Addressing the costs, Sonenfeld said, “We have some real offsets here in the case of not spending on overtime this year.”

According to Director of Operations Frank Moritz, the point of the change is “to have a better product at the end of the day for an equal amount of money.

N.J. Democratic congressional candidate Roy Cho’s voting record raises residency questions

N.J. Democratic congressional candidate Roy Cho’s voting record raises residency questions
By Matt Friedman | NJ Advance Media for NJ.com

TRENTON — Roy Cho, the Democratic candidate who’s presenting a tough challenge to Republican U.S. Rep. Scott Garrett, says he moved into the congressional district in the summer of 2012.

But records show he cast a vote from Manalapan, 52 miles to the south, in November, 2012 — more than two months after his campaign said he moved to Hackensack, in the 5th Congressional District.

“Roy Cho says he moved to Hackensack in the summer of 2012. So why then did he vote in Manalapan in November 2012?” said Garrett spokeswoman Maggie Seidel. “Either Roy Cho is lying about his residency in the Fifth District or he’s acted illegally by committing voter fraud — or both.”

The records, provided by Garrett’s campaign, show Cho registered to vote in Hackensack in April of 2013 and began voting in the city’s May 2013 municipal elections.

Cho’s 2012 vote in Manalapan, where he grew up and his parents live, was his first vote in New Jersey since 2009. Between 2010 and 2012, the 33-year-old Cho lived in New York City, where he worked as a corporate lawyer. All of his previous votes were made in Manalapan as well.

Under New Jersey law, it’s a second degree crime to cast ballots that are “known by the person to be materially false, fictitious or fraudulent.” A Middlesex County judge, Spencer Robbins, resigned in March after he was charged withvoting twice in Woodbridge while living in Chatham.

Obama makes rare campaign trail appearance, people leave early

Obama makes rare campaign trail appearance, people leave early
By Jeff Mason
UPPER MARLBORO Md. Sun Oct 19, 2014 6:22pm EDT

(Reuters) – President Barack Obama made a rare appearance on the campaign trail on Sunday with a rally to support the Democratic candidate for governor in Maryland, but early departures of crowd members while he spoke underscored his continuing unpopularity.

With approval levels hovering around record lows, Obama has spent most of his campaign-related efforts this year raising money for struggling Democrats, who risk losing control of the U.S. Senate in the Nov. 4 midterm election.

Most candidates from his party have been wary of appearing with him during their election races because of his sagging popularity.

Not so Lieutenant Governor Anthony Brown of Maryland, who is running for governor, and Governor Pat Quinn of Illinois, who is running for re-election. Obama plans to appear at an event for Quinn later in the evening.

At least 113 staffers at U.S. Fed earn more than Yellen

U.S. Federal Reserve Board chair Janet Yellen holds a news conference in Washington

At least 113 staffers at U.S. Fed earn more than Yellen
By Michael Flaherty

WASHINGTON Fri Oct 17, 2014 10:08am EDT

(Reuters) – The top 113 earners among staff at the Federal Reserve’s Washington headquarters make an average of $246,506 per year, excluding bonuses and other benefits – more than Fed Chair Janet Yellen and nearly double the normal top government rate.

Yellen, whose salary is set by Congress, earns $201,700 a year.

The details on Fed pay were provided to Reuters in response to a Freedom of Information Act request for data on all employees of the U.S. central bank’s board whose salaries outstrip $130,810, which is the top of the government’s pay scale in most areas.

However, the central bank only provided salaries for staff who make at least $225,000 a year, with some exceptions. It is the first time the list has been made public.

Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives have sponsored a bill that would require the Fed to divulge that information publicly.

Supporters of the Fed say the world’s leading central bank needs top talent, and note that its expenses are not covered by taxpayers, but by the income it earns on securities it holds. Critics, however, think the Fed has too much discretion.

“It certainly bolsters the case for more oversight,” said Maggie Seidel, a spokeswoman for New Jersey Republican Scott Garrett, a co-sponsor of the bill. ( https://1.usa.gov/ZD7VXz )

NBC’s Snyderman faces credibility issues over Ebola quarantine

October 20, 2014, 1:40 PM    Last updated: Monday, October 20, 2014, 2:02 PM
Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) — The quarantine against possible Ebola exposure ends this week for Dr. Nancy Snyderman, but the troubles clearly aren’t over for NBC News’ chief medical editor.

An admitted lapse in the quarantine, combined with a curiously imprecise explanation, unleashed a furious response. NBC must now decide whether Snyderman’s credibility is too damaged for her to continue reporting on Ebola or other medical issues and, if so, for how long. The network would not comment.

Snyderman, a surgeon who spent 17 years as a medical correspondent for ABC News and has been at NBC since 2006, covered the Ebola outbreak in West Africa and worked briefly with Ashoka Mukpo, the cameraman who caught the virus and is now being treated in Nebraska. Upon returning to the United States, Snyderman and her crew voluntarily agreed to quarantine themselves for 21 days, the longest known incubation period for the disease. They have shown no symptoms.

Yet New Jersey health officials ruled that her quarantine should be mandatory after Snyderman and her crew were spotted getting takeout food from a New Jersey restaurant.

NBC won’t give details about who actually went into the restaurant, or even how many of its employees are being quarantined. Snyderman issued a statement saying “members of our group” violated their pledge.

More than 1,100 people have subsequently written on Snyderman’s Facebook page, many expressing anger. There were suggestions she should be fired or lose her medical license, and some viewers said they wouldn’t trust her again. Snyderman’s failure to be more specific about the lapse or take greater responsibility was another flashpoint.

Snyderman’s “arrogance and dismissiveness” create a huge PR and credibility problem for NBC, said Kelly McBride, an expert on ethics for the journalism think tank the Poynter Institute.
