Ridgewood NJ,  Manhattan Concert Productions selected the GWMS Chamber Orchestra to participate in the National Orchestra Festival at Lincoln Center, held in March. Student musicians worked with Gary Lewis from the College of Music at the University of Colorado for a one-hour clinic. Following the clinic they participated in the festival on Avery Fisher Hall Stage in Lincoln Center. Students received a critique of their performance by Virginia Allen, Assistant Dean from The Julliard School, Timothy Mahr, from St. Olaf College and Glen Block, from Illinois State University.

GWMS Chamber students were the only middle school students selected to participate in this festival and received countless praises from audience members, adjudicators as well as the festival staff.

Reader says Technology is evolving at such a rate that we will eventually no longer have libraries

Technology is evolving at such a rate that we will eventually no longer have libraries in the physical books and brick and mortar sense that we know of them today. This probably sounds unthinkable, and I hear the arguments that libraries do a lot more than loan books, but it will simply come down to a continual lessening of library usage and economics. The only reason they will remain operational as long as they will is due to political resistance and a misguided hankering for community spirit.

Reader says any growth in the Library budget is insignificant compared to the growth in wages and benefits

Bike_Ridgewood_Public_Library_theridgewoodblog.net_-300x225

Reader says  any growth in the Library budget is insignificant compared to the growth in wages and benefits

Let’s look at the facts: the overall Village budget has grown by +9% from $42.15mn in 2009 to $46.02mn as of the adopted 2012 budget; of that, the Library budget had DECLINED -2% from $2.28mn to $2.23mn in 2009; meanwhile insurance, including healthcare, GREW +48% from $4.02mn to $5.95mn, the bill for public safety ROSE +7% from $11.39mn to $12.2mn, and the cost to taxpayers to fund pensions & social security INCREASED +26% from $3.6mn to $4.54mn.

For those keeping score, healthcare, wages and pensions accounted for almost 100% of the growth in our budget since 2009, yet we cut funding for the Library since then. So while the pensionistas will have you believe that funding the Library at 2009 levels (only $50,000 more a year than in 2012) is a horrible idea, they won’t tell you that any growth in the Library budget is insignificant compared to the growth in wages and benefits for their boys. And in a metric that even they should be able to understand, it costs the average tax payer $1.01 per household/commercial business, per day, to have a Village Library open to all. That’s a bad thing ?

Inherently Beneficial Use Doctrine dictates that even hospitals must demonstrate that the benefits to the community resulting from development projects must outweigh the detriments.

Valley has yet to prove that doubling in size will benefit Ridgewood at all (less than 10% of Valley patients actually live here), and it is VERY CLEAR that the detriments will be enormous.

Reader says Community volunteers are a wonderful asset yet the act of volunteering itself does not qualify one to sit on the Council.

There is a big difference between volunteering and knowing how to manage or even understand a municipal budget. Mrs. Hauck is a long time community volunteer that brings a passion for the Library . Unfortunatel, comments like this one shine a bright light on her lack of experience in making difficult budget decisions. Community volunteers are a wonderful asset yet the act of volunteering itself does not qualify one to sit on the Council.

Mr. Albano’s profile is very similar to Mrs. Hauck’s. He is a long time volunteer with a passion for a single organization but not much municipal experience beyond that. Please consider that on May 13.

Nevada range fight revives ‘Sagebrush Rebellion’

The federal Bureau of Land Management returned a Nevada rancher’s cattle, avoiding a potentially dangerous confrontation. But the legal fight over grazing fees continues.

By Brad Knickerbocker, Staff writer / April 13, 2014

In the sparse Nevada rangeland this weekend, US western history came alive with a fight over cattle that threatened to turn violent.

In the end, federal land managers backed down, giving rancher Cliven Bundy his 400 head of cattle. The cows, which had been rounded up on public land where Mr. Bundy’s herd had grazed for years, represented a classic clash of values: Old West traditions and practices versus New West environmental sensibilities.

In Bundy’s case, the story goes back to the 1870s, when his Mormon pioneer ancestors first began ranching on public land, which eventually came under the domain of the federal Bureau of Land Management (BLM). Bundy claims the land is his, although he does not have legal title to it.

Many ranchers in the rural West run their cattle on federal land, paying regular grazing fees that are based on cow-calf pairs. Such ranches range from small, family-based part time operations to large corporations based in Los Angeles and elsewhere. Bundy had refused to pay the fee, which led to the attempt to seize his cattle.

Millions of smartphones and tablets running Google Inc. (GOOG)’s Android operating system have the Heartbleed software bug, in a sign of how broadly the flaw extends beyond the Internet and into consumer devices.

While Google said in a blog post on April 9 that all versions of Android are immune to the flaw, it added that the “limited exception” was one version dubbed 4.1.1, which was released in 2012.

Security researchers said that version of Android is still used in millions of smartphones and tablets, including popular models made by Samsung Electronics Co., HTC Corp. and other manufacturers. Google statistics show that 34 percent of Android devices use variations of the 4.1 software. The company said less than 10 percent of active devices are vulnerable. More than 900 million Android devices have been activated worldwide.

Pope Francis poses for ‘selfies’ after Palm Sunday homily

Pope Francis poses for ‘selfies’ after Palm Sunday homily

VATICAN CITY –  Pope Francis, marking Palm Sunday in a packed St. Peter’s Square, ignored his prepared homily and spoke entirely off-the-cuff in a remarkable departure from practice. Later, he hopped off his popemobile to pose for “selfies” with young people and also sipped tea passed to him from the crowd.

In his homily, Francis called on people, himself included, to look into their own hearts to see how they are living their lives.

“Has my life fallen asleep?” Francis asked after listening to a Gospel account of how Jesus’ disciples fell asleep shortly before he was betrayed by Judas before his crucifixion.

“Am I like Pontius Pilate, who, when he sees the situation is difficult, washes my hands?”

He sounded tired, frequently pausing to catch his breath, as he spoke for about 15 minutes in his homily during Palm Sunday Mass, which solemnly opens Holy Week for the Roman Catholic Church.

`’Where is my heart?” the pope asked, pinpointing that as the “question which accompanies us” throughout Holy Week.

Harsh winter revs up spring allergies in NJ

APRIL 12, 2014, 11:19 PM    LAST UPDATED: SATURDAY, APRIL 12, 2014, 11:19 PM

THE RECORD

Sure, this winter was cold, icky and long. But at least you weren’t allergic to the snow.

In the next few weeks, people with pollen allergies may look back at the never-ending winter of 2014 with unexpected fondness. With temperatures finally starting to rise, New Jersey may soon experience a compressed spring, causing an allergy season that’s supercharged.

For some, like Estefanny Lopez, who lives in Lodi with her 2-year-old son, the battle is on already. Mother and son had never experienced allergy symptoms until last month, when both started to experience itchy noses and sneezing.

“It’s been a really rough spring,” said Lopez, 25.

In a traditional spring, various species of pollinating trees and flowers bloom sequentially over a period of about 2½ months, said Estelle Levetin, who has studied airborne pollen since 1980. If spring is delayed, more plants pollinate all at once, creating a shorter but more intense season that can exacerbate symptoms for people who are allergic.

“This year we had an unusually cold winter that lasted longer than normal, and that set back pollen release significantly,” said Levetin, a biology professor at the University of Tulsa. “Each individual plant is not pollinating much more than normal. We’re just having a lot of plants pollinate simultaneously.”

At doctors’ offices across North Jersey, some allergists already are noticing a surge of patients complaining about runny noses, itchy eyes and labored breathing.
