Plans for open space in Ridgewood still to be determined

The Ridgewood News

It’s not uncommon to catch a glimpse of a youth ball game while driving through the Route 17 corridor. To date, motorists can spy the action on sports fields from the heavily trafficked highway in East Rutherford, Carlstadt and Hasbrouck Heights.

Ridgewood’s Open Space Committee last October recommended that any individual or group interested in preserving the Schedler house on West Saddle River Road should present plans to the Village Council within 12 months. Several residents had the opportunity to tour the property and interior, pictured here, of the home last month.

maple+field1-300x1991

If funding falls into place, a fourth location and the first adjacent to the thoroughfare’s northbound lanes might one day pop up in Ridgewood. Plans to convert the heavily wooded, 7-plus acre lot between Route 17 North and West Saddle River Road into a multi-use athletics facility have made the first run through the village’s engineering department but are still under scrutiny and far from complete.

The fate of what is known to most residents as the Schedler property is still up in the air, though a youth sports complex has already won the endorsement of a number of key groups in Ridgewood, including the Open Space Committee. Specifically, a 90-foot baseball diamond with a multi-purpose turf field overlaying the baseball outfield has been laid out on the table. The plan also calls for designated areas for passive recreation and an accompanying parking lot.

‘A big act’: Newark mayor’s ‘urban legends’
By Michael Gartland
September 21, 2013 | 8:06pm

Gunshots rang out between the red-brick apartment buildings at Pilgrim Village, and Newark Mayor Cory Booker ran to the noise. When Wazn Miller — the 19-year-old who was shot and bleeding — fell, Booker was there to catch him.
It was April 19, 2004. Just another day in Newark.

“It seemed like a whirlwind was going on around me, so much was flashing through my mind as I sat there just trying to hold this child as his breathing stopped,” Booker told an audience at Yale three years later. “The ambulance finally came, pushed me out of the way, ripped open his shirt where I now saw three gunshot wounds in his front, one in his side — and he was dead.”

Booker’s breathless retelling of Miller’s tragic end was meant to illustrate one of the “lowest points” in his life in the Brick City. It’s the type of story that has made him famous and wealthy, a national figure who pundits say looks increasingly “presidential” and will be, more than likely, New Jersey’s next US senator.

The only problem is, the story isn’t completely true.

2013 Ridgewood Jazz & Blues Feast
September 18,2013
the Ridgewood Guild

Ridgewood NJ, On Sunday Sept 15 The Ridgewood Guild hosted its inaugural Jazz Feast. This one day event drew a crowd of over 2,000 people to Memorial Park at Van Neste Square right here in Ridgewood.

It was truly a happening in the park! A diverse selection of jazz musicians brought down the house. The show opened with jazz and blues songstress Antoinette Montague. She performed with Dave Chamberlain’s Band of Bones, giving her that big band sound that people just adore. Special guest guitarist King Solomon Hicks was pure joy. Antoinette was followed by front man Rob Paparozzi who’s jazz, rock, and blues harmonica playing was equally appealing. Rob has played with industry luminaries such as B. B. King, Whitney Houston, Carole King, and Cyndi Lauper to name a few. The show ended with a stellar performance by one of the industries most revered drummers, Winard Harper. Harper on drums with his band as back up was magical! A special guest appearance by the legendary Steve Turri made the day even more special.

16 of Ridgewood’s finest restaurants were on hand serving up some of the best food that our village has to offer. A Beer and Wine Garden was on hand with the Garden State’s Ventimiglia Vineyards and Kohler Distributing Co.

The Ridgewood Guild would like to thank The Valley Hospital, Park Avenue Saab, and Applebee’s/Shannon Rose for sponsoring our event.

“To change a town’s master plan for this is ludicrous”

Valleywood_theridgewoodblog.net_1-300x22512

“To change a town’s master plan for this is ludicrous”

When in doubt, use logic. The Master Plan is the Planning boards reason out and to say no. The Master Plan is the logic for the Council and all involved just to say no.

The Master Plan is the reason and logical way out for all involved.

Sorry Valley, the Master Plan should not be changed and you have wasted a lot of peoples time and money for this ridiculous expansion in Ridgewood. I do not know why the better solution of expanding is no being talked more about in Paramus. Valley is not a hard luck case. You do not have to expand here to survive.

I find it amazing that we are even still entertaining this year after year.

The existing Master Plan should be enough to stop this just as it’s done in years past. Add next to a school and in a residential neighborhood…why is this still going on?

BIG NO TO VALLEYWOOD

Stop the Nonsense

ASSOCIATED PRESS
This frame grab from video provided by Fox 29 shows a raging fire in Seaside Park, N.J. on Thursday, Sept. 12, 2013.

“Total Destruction.” That’s how Fire Chief Brian Gabriel describes the scene along four blocks of the Seaside boardwalk that were ravaged by fire Thursday.

From Lincoln to Farragut Avenues. there is nothing left but burned out buildings, some still smoldering.

At a press conference this morning, the chief would not confirm how many businesses were destroyed in yesterday’s fire, which ravaged parts of Seaside Heights and Seaside Park.

Power has largely been restored, except for the area directly around where the fire raged Thursday, Gabriel said.

No business owners are being allowed to return yet.

‘Revenge porn’ victim tells story, fights for change
hursday – 9/12/2013, 12:15pm  ET

By Neal Augenstein

WASHINGTON – “It was completely devastating when I first found the pictures – I could feel myself go into shock.”

Holly Jacobs had no idea the racy photographs she’d shared with her boyfriend would be used against her in a publicly humiliating way after they broke up.

revenge27n-4-web

Yet, in 2009 a friend called to say Jacobs’ Facebook account had been hacked and a nude photo was online.

And it got worse.

“My photos and a video of me were up on a revenge porn website,” says Jacobs, who legally changed her name in the aftermath.

With her name, phone number and email address posted online, Jacobs was bombarded with unwanted attention.

Her photos and videos were even sent to her boss.

Revenge porn sites make no bones about why they exist.

9/11 Anniversary Prompts More Transit Security
By Dino Flammia September 10, 2013 5:24 AM

Mass transit officials are on high alert this week as we mark the twelfth anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terror attacks.

“We know we’re a target, as is every transit agency in the country,” said Jim Weinstein, executive director of New Jersey Transit. “So we take this seriously.”

While he wasn’t willing to share specifics, understandably, Weinstein said special efforts are underway from the agency’s police department. People can expect more cops, as well as K9 units, in major bus and train hubs across the state.

Federal officials have learned that the visibility of a police officer is the best deterrent to terroristic activity, according to Weinstein.

16% of Young People Out of Work in August

People-Playing-Video-Game

16% of Young People Out of Work in August

As Obamacare looms, Generation Opportunity releases final Millennial Jobs Report of the summer

Washington, DC – (9/6/13) – Generation Opportunity, a national, non-partisan youth advocacy organization, is announcing its Millennial Jobs Report for August 2013. The data is non-seasonally adjusted (NSA) and is specific to 18-29 year olds:

The effective (U6) unemployment rate for 18-29 year olds, which adjusts for labor force participation by including those who have given up looking for work, is 16 percent (NSA).

The declining labor force participation rate has created an additional 1.7 million young adults that are not counted as “unemployed” by the U.S. Department of Labor because they are not in the labor force, meaning that those young people have given up looking for work due to the lack of jobs.

The (U3) unemployment rate for 18-29 year olds is 11.8 percent (NSA). The (U3) unemployment rate for 18-29 year old African-Americans is 21.6 percent (NSA); the (U3) unemployment rate for 18-29 year old Hispanics is 12.8 percent (NSA); and the (U3) unemployment rate for 18–29 year old women is 10.8 percent (NSA).

Evan Feinberg, President of Generation Opportunity, issued the following statement:

“As the summer draws to a close, young people are no better off than we were three months ago. Practically all of the jobs created this summer were part-time, and precious few even went to young people. Worse, the looming threat of Obamacare offers employers little incentive to transition any of those jobs into full-time positions.

“Young people are recognizing there is little to like about Obamacare and a whole lot that hurts them financially and personally. Once open enrollment starts next month, I’m confident that millions of us are going to opt-out of the law’s doomed-to-fail exchanges; unfortunately, we can’t opt-out of the disastrous job market Obamacare has also created.”

Generation Opportunity is a national, non-partisan organization advocating for economic opportunity for young people through less government and more freedom.

‘Real Housewives’ Ridgewood assault case put off until later this month

RIDGEWOOD — Three cast members from “The Real Housewives of New Jersey” will not appear before a criminal judge this evening, as previously reported.

The assault and terroristic threat complaints against “Housewives” star Jacqueline Laurita of Franklin Lakes; her husband, Christopher; and Joe Gorga of Montville have been adjourned.

The cases will now proceed in Ridgewood’s Municipal Court on Sept. 26.

The charges stem from a fracas at the grand opening of a salon in Ridgewood.

The charges had been referred in April to the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office for grand jury consideration, which returned the matter to Ridgewood for resolution last month.

The case of John Karagiorgis of Paramus, who is charged with assault and making terroristic threats as well as three counts of harassment, was also adjourned until later this month.

Karagiorgis claimed he was assaulted by the “Housewives” trio when cameras were rolling for the Bravo television series.

He said he sustained several injuries, including a head abrasion, when Jacqueline Laurita allegedly clubbed him with a stiletto heel.
