Paramus NJ, A routine gas station stop in Bergen County took a violent turn when a driver chose to run over an employee rather than pay his bill.
Paramus police have officially arrested and charged a New York man following a harrowing hit-and-run incident at a local Exxon station. The shocking event, which unfolded in broad daylight, left a 43-year-old gas attendant hospitalized.
Thanks to swift detective work and multi-agency cooperation, the suspect is now facing major felony charges. Here is what happened.
The Incident: A $50 Gas Theft Turns Violent
On the morning of May 29, at approximately 8:00 a.m., Paramus police officers responded to an emergency call at the Exxon Gas Station located at 792 Route 17 North.
According to authorities, a driver pulled up to the pumps and requested $50 worth of regular gasoline, stating he would pay the attendant in cash. However, as soon as the fuel finished dispensing, the driver slammed on the gas pedal.
In a desperate bid to flee without paying, the motorist accelerated forward, striking the gas attendant and running directly over his right foot. The victim, a 43-year-old resident of Oradell, NJ, sustained injuries and was transported to a local hospital for medical treatment.
Surveillance Video and Inter-State Investigation Leads to Arrest
The suspect likely thought he made a clean getaway across state lines, but high-tech surveillance and sharp police work quickly proved him wrong.
Paramus Detective Joseph Windt reviewed security footage from the Exxon station, successfully identifying the suspect’s getaway vehicle as a 2005 Lexus sporting New York license plates.
Working closely with the Clarkstown Police Department in New York, Detective Windt tracking down the vehicle’s operator. By the evening of the theft, authorities had located and successfully taken the suspect into custody.
Suspect Identified and Facing Severe Charges
The driver has been identified as Alexis J. Santiago, 35, of Airmont, New York.
While the initial crime began as a minor shoplifting incident, using a motor vehicle to harm an employee elevates the offenses to severe criminal acts. The Paramus Police Department has officially charged Santiago with a sweeping list of crimes:
-
Robbery
-
Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon (categorized due to the use of the motor vehicle)
-
Assault by Auto
-
Theft (a disorderly persons offense)
Santiago remains in custody as legal proceedings move forward in Bergen County.
