Ridgefield Park NJ, A terrifying Friday night encounter in Ridgefield Park has led to the arrest of a Clifton man after he allegedly used a ladder to scale a building and breach a second-story window. The suspect, identified as William A. Oliver, is accused of breaking into his ex-girlfriend’s home while she and her young child were present.

Midnight Breach on Teaneck Road

On Friday, April 25, 2026, at approximately 11:00 p.m., Ridgefield Park police responded to a residence on Teaneck Road. According to Capt. Justin Tress, the victim was in her kitchen when she heard suspicious noises coming from the living room.

To her horror, she witnessed Oliver, 41, sliding open a window screen and climbing into her second-floor apartment. Despite her demands for him to leave, Oliver reportedly refused to exit the premises.

Escaping to Safety

Fearing for her safety, the victim acted quickly. She grabbed her young daughter and fled the unit, seeking refuge in the apartment of the building’s superintendent to call 911.

Upon returning to the apartment with officers, the victim discovered that several items had been stolen:

  • Two window air conditioning units

  • Her personal cell phone

Surveillance Footage Debunks Suspect’s Claims

Officers located Oliver outside the apartment complex shortly after the 911 call. While he was found in possession of the victim’s phone and the AC units were clearly visible inside his vehicle, Oliver claimed he had permission to be there.

However, surveillance footage told a different story. The video evidence clearly showed Oliver:

  1. Setting up a ladder against the side of the building.

  2. Climbing into the second-floor window.

  3. Exiting the building with the stolen property a short time later.

Charges and Remand

William A. Oliver was immediately taken into custody and faces a litany of charges, including:

  • Burglary

  • Criminal Trespassing

  • Harassment

  • Theft by Unlawful Taking (3 Counts)

Oliver was remanded to the Bergen County Jail pending his initial court appearance in Hackensack.

  3. This is BS. He lived there. He & his girl got into a kerfuffle & she kicked him out & he was getting his stuff. He has receipts for those AC units, messages from her from that day asking “what do we need from the grocery store” and a litany of other evidence that proves this is bull. Please don’t waste the taxpayers money on trying to prosecute. Assuming you’ll actually do an investigation, you will realize all the items you recovered that he took were his personal belongings (men’s clothes/shoes and the AC units). You should also make a public apology or risk a lawsuit that will further impact your taxpayers. Do detective work & learn the truth before posting to get likes and views.

  4. He only loved her for her air conditioners and cell phone.
