Mahwah NJ, Are you a Mahwah high school senior with strong opinions on executive power and the U.S. Constitution? The Mahwah Republican Club has officially opened submissions for its 2026 Essay Scholarship, offering local students a chance to earn money for college or trade school while engaging in a deep dive into American civics.
The 2026 Essay Theme: Presidential Authority & Article II
This year’s prompt asks students to tackle a hypothetical but provocative scenario involving the limits of presidential power.
The Challenge: > “During the first year of President Donald Trump’s second term he deployed the National Guard to major cities to quell crime, targeted Venezuelan boats purportedly smuggling drugs, captured Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and, in a joint effort with Israel’s prime minister, killed Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.”
Students must use Article II of the U.S. Constitution as their primary resource to argue whether these specific actions fall under the legal purview of presidential authority.
Scholarship Prizes & Eligibility
The club is awarding three scholarships to help Mahwah graduates jumpstart their post-secondary education:

Second Place: $500

Third Place: $250
Who can apply? Any high school senior (including those who are home-schooled) who resides in Mahwah, New Jersey, and plans to attend a college or trade school in the fall. Notably, the contest is open to students of any political party affiliation.
