U.S. Soldiers Serving in War Zones Earn an Additional $225 Per Week in Military Pay

Ridgewood NJ, Service members deployed to dangerous war zones overseas are no longer subject to State Income Tax for combat zone pay under a new law sponsored by Senator Kristin Corrado and signed today by Governor Murphy.
“The military men and women who put their lives on the line to fight for our freedoms in war zones are under-paid heroes,” said Corrado (R-40). “The military provides a combat zone stipend of $225 per week, and this new law allows our soldiers to hold onto more of it, exempting the bonus from state income tax. As a nation, we ask more than enough from our U.S. military members. Taxing their combat pay is unnecessary and insensitive, and that flawed practice ends today.”
The bipartisan bill (S-2050/S-2090) signed today excludes from New Jersey taxes military pay for service in a combat zone or for hospitalization as a result of injury while serving in a combat zone.
“New Jersey was the only state taxing this money,” Corrado said. “We ask more than enough from our military personnel without taxing their war pay. This is good news for those deployed to dangerous location who will save as much as $400 per year on their New Jersey taxes. For families relying on a military salary, this will ease some financial pressure and help make ends meet.”
A combat zone is any area the President of the United States designates by Executive Order as an area in which the U.S. Armed Forces are engaging or have engaged in combat. An area usually becomes a combat zone and ceases to be a combat zone on the dates the President designates by Executive Order. Combat zone pay is an additional payment, added onto their regular salary, given to members of the Armed Forces for serving in combat zones.
Currently, the U.S. has four active combat zones: the Sinai Peninsula; the Afghanistan Area (including Afghanistan, Jordan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Djibouti, Yemen, Somalia, and Syria); the Kosovo Area (including Serbia, Montenegro, Albania, Kosovo, the Adriatic Sea, and parts of the Lonian Sea above the 39th parallel); and the Arabian Peninsula Area (including the Persian Gulf, The Red Sea, the Gulf of Oman, parts of the Arabian Sea, the Gulf of Aden, Iraq, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Bahrain, Qatar, the UAE, Jordan, and Lebanon).
Don’t forget those other combat zones: Portland, New York, and Ridgewood, NJ. Those free-loading BLM protesters are making it harder for us to get to Whole Foods and Super Cellars while our maids clean our houses. It’s anarchy, I tell you!
