Ridgewood NJ, convicted U.S. Senator Bob Menendez has officially withdrawn his name from the upcoming November ballot as an independent candidate. This decision was confirmed just ahead of the Friday deadline for independent Senate candidates to remove themselves from the race.

Menendez, who has served New Jersey as a U.S. Senator, sent a formal letter to the New Jersey Division of Elections, requesting the removal of his name from this fall’s ballots. “By means of this email please be advised that as an Independent candidate for the U.S. Senate in this November’s election I am advising you that I wish to have my name withdrawn from the ballot,” Menendez wrote to Donna Barber, the acting Director of the New Jersey Election Division, using his official letterhead.

The decision to withdraw comes after Menendez’s conviction in July on 16 felony counts related to a federal corruption trial. His co-defendants, New Jersey businessmen Wael Hana and Fred Daibes, were also found guilty of 18 felony counts. All three are scheduled for sentencing on October 29.

The federal indictment against Menendez, which was first unsealed last September, detailed a bribery scheme involving Menendez, his wife Nadine Arslanian Menendez, Hana, Daibes, and another associate, Jose Uribe. The indictment alleged that Menendez used his political influence to receive bribes in the form of cash, gold bars, and a luxury car, in exchange for leveraging his power to benefit the businessmen and the government of Egypt. The jury found that Menendez used his “power and influence to protect, to enrich those businessmen and to benefit the government of Egypt,” even while he was the chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

Menendez’s official resignation from his Senate seat is set for Tuesday.

In related news, New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy has named his former chief of staff, George Helmy, to fill the remainder of Menendez’s term. Helmy, who has previously worked for Senator Cory Booker and the late Senator Frank Lautenberg, will serve until the winner of the November election is certified. Murphy has announced that the winner will be appointed to the Senate seat before the New Year, ensuring a smooth transition for the new Congress.
